After watching the game-play trailer a few times, it occurred to me that there may have been a very deliberate reason for not including in the E3 2003 demo in the final version of Halo 2.
For those that do not remember it. The demo consisted of something like 10 minutes worth of game-play from what viewers then believed to be a level from the upcoming Halo 2. Essentially, the Master Chief had to make his way through New Mombasa in the midst of a full-scale invasion by the Covenant. This showed off all the sweet new features like dual wielding, the Battle Rifle, Brutes and even an airstrike on an AA platform by Longsword bombers. What puzzled many people was the complete absence of that sequence from the final release.
Yes, we did get "Outskirst" and "Metropolis." But I (and I'm sure others can relate) felt a little let down not having the demo included.
Now it appears we may have a reason. I don't know if Bungie had been thinking that far into the future but I can definitely picture the whole demo being much more exciting and challenging from the perspective of an ODST rather than a Spartan. And some of the shots from the new trailer looked eerily similar to those of the demo.
Or maybe it's just a coincidence and I'm totally wrong. Either way, can't wait for September.
