Subject: Finally a next gen FPS worth playing?

I hope to god this game is worth playing. I'll get the ODST game to play the Beta to see whats up. I am a fan of Halo 3 campaign, so it'll be worth playing for that as well.

Halo 2 and 1 were freakin awesome. Solid fast gameplay that was consistant and took alot of skill. Halo 3 was a step backwards as they closed the skill gap making the mulitplayer not worth playing.

My biggest concern is if they are going to go with the Halo 3 mutliplayer "Spray and Pray" style, or if they are going to go back to Halo 1 +2 style where the weapons are consistant (like the BR and pistol) and not silly super powerful spray and pray (assault rifle).

There isn't a FPS worth playing for me atm. Unreal Tournament III doesn't have matchmaking or enough people playing. CoD is just like SWAT in halo to me with annoying cover and being hard to spot people. Halo 3 is dominated by a spray and pray weapon and the skill gap is so small that a game where you win by 10 is considered beating on people. If you win by more than 10, the other team was really really bad.

In halo 2, if you were better than the other team you could go 50-10 or even closer to 50-5, in Halo 3 it's just not possible due to the small skill gap.

Please bungie, don't mess this game up. You have the opportunity to make the best competitive next gen FPS. Do it right.

(For the record, i'm not one of those glitch whores who thinks Halo 1 + 2 were so awesome because of the glitches. While some of the glitches like BXB and BXR were awesome and balanced the game more, the game is perfect without them. I've played many games without using a single glitch and it's still entirely possible to dominate because the skill gap doesn't lie in the glitches, but in the fast pasted consistant action.)

Thanks for reading.

True. Now that I think about it having the -blam!- beat out of you with a pool ball in a tube sock by your degenerate pimp is the better choice.

.

The skill gap leads to closer games, and really those are the most fun. every once in a while the 50-10 games are fun, but that would be boring if it happened every game

I have to wonder, have you ever tried the MLG or Snipers playlists? Those seem to be your style.

Either way, its hard to say. I have faith in Bungie, but faith doesnt tell me -blam!- about what the game is like.

I agree with the op only on the fact that halo 3 mp got boring and with the same hopes that bungie tries something different with Halo: Reach.

If it ends up being a reskinned version of H3 I doubt I will play the MP.

If you think that halo 3 was spray and pray, why are you saying halo 1 and 2 had any more skill in them? In halo 1 you had your assault rifle, pretty much as powerful as halo 3's. And in halo 2 the br was overpowered, and it had spray and pray weapons too.

You people have just sent my sides into orbit. A bunch of MLG try hards sucking the dick of some supposed pro half the thread hasn't even heard of. Classic.

I am confused. Where does this say that it will be an FPS?

Isnt the whole point of this forum to make unnecessary assumptions at the expense of actual debates and facts? Oh, it isnt? Goddamn you Bungie and your lack of information.

  • 06.01.2009 2:21 PM PDT

I'm just saying those scores as an example of how small the skill gap is in Halo 3. They replaced skilled weapons like the BR with nerfed versions that take a back seat to the all powerful assault rifle.

I mean, come on. The Rocket Launcher is even waaaay easier to use in halo 3.

Oh no! Someone is right in my face and I have a rocket launcher. Oh wait, this is Halo 3 where I can shoot someone right in the face with my rocket launcher and live. Yay! In halo 2 you would die if you shot someone point blank with a rocket.

Small things like these all added together make it so less skilled players even againt good players can make the game close because there is not much of a skill gap.

I'm not saying 50-10 games are fun, I'm just saying that without a bigger skill cap, it's amost impossible to achieve. Which shows one of the biggest flaws with the game.

This isn't supposed to be a bash halo 3 thread, it's supposed to be "How awesome can the next halo be?" thread.

About MLG playlist, I play it and I like some of the rules, but I don't think it's even 10% as fun as Halo 2's MLG playist (Team Hardcore). Team Hardcore is ALL i played in Halo 2. Thats it. DIdn't touch the other playlists because I didn't really like them.

Oh and LOL @ snipers. Never liked team snipers and never will. Little kids finding a rock to hide behind for 15 minutes FTL.

I agree totally with you Murder, they have a great chance now, and Halo 3 didn't really make me that happy.

Yes, they did. Halo 2 even had the most powerful spray and pray combo, the SMG + Plasma Rifle which was rediculously powerful.

But in both of these games, there were better weapons that you could use that were skill based. Halo 1 had the pistol and Halo 2 had the BR.

If you tried to run around with SMG dual wield in halo 2 or the assault rifle in halo 1 you would get owned by the pistol or BR.

In halo 3 if you run around with just the assault rifle you can get really good results. Thats my main point.

Yes, this is what I'm afraid of.

They know Halo 3 works and sells. This is why I'm afraid they will just release the game again with a different campaign.

They have a chance to do something great, they shouldn't do the same thing again just to line their pockets.

And for that you are correct. But in 80% of your battles, a BR will better serve you. But halo 3 wasn't a complete step in the wrong direction. for all its flaws, as all games have, there are some remarkable successes.

<3 You. Thanks for reading.

This is a great chance for Bungie to redeem themselves in the eyes of competitive players.

If the new halo game is as competitive as halo 1 and 2, I have 100 bucks on Team Final Boss going back to Walshy. That guy is a beast in real competitive games.

I disagree...

I believe that from the start of Halo CE, each Halo has been better.

I imagine you would be willing throw another 100 on ogre 2? I still find that story strange.

/wave Warlord Alpha. I just remembered that you are on my friends list lol. I've started playing halo 3 a little again because my friends are playing. Hit me up and I'll play some halo 3 with ya.

Yeah, but what irks me is when someone comes up and starts ARing me and I start BRing them in the face and it goes... 4 shots to the head...ok almost dead....5 shots....ok this guy HAS to be one shot...6 shots omg why isn't he dead? Then I fall over.

My main point is that the BR is INCONSISTANT. Which can makes shots miss that are dead on because of the spread. You shouldn't lose a fight because of some random factor. I've lost AR vs. BR fights because 1 or 2 of my 3 shot spread would miss and he would win. Even though I had perfect aim and all he did is hold down the R trigger and run at me like a mad man.

I hope they're just going to consider making the game fun to play. Whatever that means in the end. I therefore hope they will not try to cater to any minority of the player base, but think more broadly about what people like about Halo.

That's the bottom line, to me.

I can agree with you murder.....the halo 3 beta was perfect no changes to gameplay was needed. But for the sake of casual gamers the dynamics were changed to make the game for favorable to newcomers.

Youre right! Yeah, your online right now. Why didnt I notice this?

Anyways, I have to agree with what you say. Its happened to all of us. A competitive FPS...they could definetely maintain the casual audience. Thats the trouble, you know. Hell, thats the difference between the Wii and the Xbox360.

Assuming it is a FPS, of course. You have to wonder, with ODST coming, what Reach is going to be. I saw some weird suggestions in another thread. Squad-based tactical third person? Really? I wouldnt put it beyond them, especially if they have another IP behind the scenes.

agreed, halo 3 was a big disappointment to competitive gaming, i got my 50 so easily, in halo 2 i still never past my 41, and even at that, we had to steal host just to play legit games, even pros in halo 2 had to setup games just to play, but if they fix the cheating crap, and make H2 competitive type online, the game will probably be one of the best things on console, next to left 4 dead, and saints row 1--yes those games are competitive, just got to find the right people to play against.

BTW halo 3 did take some skill, but alot less, they messed up the sniper from the beta, i remember in the beta, where i was aiming is where i sniped, now its all laggy and u have to aim ahead and crap, sure it would be cool.. if everybody could hold a 26 latency, which they can't.. so no need for that crap.. just adds to "wtf moments"

anyway,
halo 3 reach+ competitive online=insta buy

Personally I think the beta was the best Halo 3 multiplayer version in terms of melee systems and weapons (besides the splazer.

Thinking halo: reach being an RPG may be hard. But i think it will be similar to an RPG, or something like Fallout or Oblivion.

I mean, look. There are a lot more silhouetted characters on the photos of reach, rather than just 1 person (exp: The Master Chief, or the Trooper) this time. It is probably an RPG.

If this is an RPG, it would break everything a traditional RPG is though of for. A linear, set-series of events war is not the place to go exploring and decision making and gathering items and what not.
