Subject: The ship in the intro...

I am thinking that this has to be a prequel, plain and simple since you hear the broadcasts and the news about the Spartans down on the surface.

However, my thoughts on the ship in the intro is that Bungie showed us that ship (Forward Unto Dawn) to silence all of our speculations as to where Master Chief/Cortana is. I don't think it has much to do with the game itself, but just a neat thing for us fans to gobble up and have some closure to the Halo 3 Legendary ending. I am watching the trailer over and over and I came to the conclusion that the ship is just tossed in there, flies by, and then the real trailer starts. Almost as a time warp pan in a sense (Modern Halo 3 timeline - showing the chief around Reach and then moves to the "current" time - battle on Reach that the game will take place). In any case I am so freaking stoked!

True. Now that I think about it having the -blam!- beat out of you with a pool ball in a tube sock by your degenerate pimp is the better choice.

.

No, no time paradoxes. We arent going to convolute the story THAT much.

I do not think that ship was Forward unto dawn because you can still see the whole ship. The ship is just bent in an awkward angle.

No, Im not saying a time paradox thing at all. Im talking about the trailer. I think we are seeing the ship the Chief is on just like in the H3 Legendary ending. But then as it floats by, we (the viewer) gets a flashback of sorts to what was happening on the planet below (Reach). I don't think there will be any time traveling stuff, but other things have done this before... Gears 2 and the Maria shot (don't want to spoil things just in case). You, the viewer, see stuff at a point in time, and then the time changes and shows what is going on. I just think that was tossed in there to finally lay to rest all of our wonders about what planet that was in the LE ending.

Ah. Good point. I was hyped over the damage/sparks and was thinking that it had to be Forward Unto Dawn. Good observation though man.

reach takes place just before Halo 1, at this time Master Chief is on board the Pillar of Autumn and Space Station Gamma with a couple other Spartans, the rest of the Spartans are the ones on the surface.

Yeah, I agree. I guess I didn't explain what I was getting at very well. I was trying to say that I think the ship in the trailer is FUD. It floats by and we are seeing what we saw in H3. As it floats by we see, through camerawork, Reach under attack. It was like a time pan (done in Hollywood all the time in movies). We see one thing and a time lapse happens (but in this case in reverse) and then we see the same planet as it was years before getting attacked during the Fall of Reach.

I only bring this up cause I (along with a lot of others) have been speculating on what planet the Chief and Cortana are floating around. I think after seeing this trailer that it could be Reach. The only reason I say that is cause in the trailer we see the ship, then it floats by. We still don't know what planet it is. Again, through the camerawork and film technique we then see the same planet as it was... which tells us that he and Cortana are floating around the very same planet. I again am not saying that there is a time warp, paradox, or any of that. Just a cleaver technique to maybe give the viewer an answer to a longstanding question.

Again, I could be totally wrong and then I hope we find out eventually what Planet the Chief and Cortana are floating around.

"On the seventh day, god did not rest, but rather he created 64 player multiplayer!"

It might be a clever technique but it doesn't explain the sun in the background, which is now redish, compared to the blue sun in the Halo 3 legendary ending...

I agree with you assassin, the first thing I thought of when i first saw the Reach trailer was the similar light arrangements we see on the surface of the planet the Chief and Cortana go by in the H3 legendary ending. My farfetched theory...Halo: Reach is just a set-up for Halo 4. The Spartans on the planet during the Fall of Reach may discover some sort of Forerunner mystery below the surface of the planet, and Halo 4 will be the continuation of that story from the Chief's perspective (many many years later, since I think it would take quite a long time for the Dawn to float from the edge of the galaxy to Reach.

Read the books. Reach is a planet that was in a big battle before Halo CE. It cant be Cortana and MC.

I was thinking that too. And maybe ODST is just a test of sorts for the flashback game mechanic. Maybe the Chief goes down to the surface and sees the old destruction and then has flashbacks and we play those flashbacks that happened during the fall of the planet. I just hope Bungie keeps it real and continues the saga as FPS games. I can't wait for the beta!!!

EXACTLY! Bungie has already stated that the Chief and Cortana's story is over. This is something different. Most likely a prequel of sorts, although I'm inclined to view it as a seperate game. After all, they probably aren't going to use any of the characters from the trilogy, which means that it's something new.

I don't think it's FUH though. At the end of H3L it looks more like a Shield Planet than Reach. Plus the ending of Halo 3 was however much time after we revisited Reach in the books. Revisiting Reach a third time would provide very little engaging story in both Human - Covenant interaction, and Forerunner secrets.

Just like you said too, that's a full ship even if broken. Also... "from the beginning you knew the end." It would make sense to put us in a Prequel to Halo 1, during Fall of Reach.

I don't think they'd truly cut the story of Chief and Cortana... at the end of Ghosts of Onyx, there is still a team of surviving S2s and S3s out there with Halsey. I could see some crazy stuff happening to where they meet up again... but it seems like every time Spartans reunite with the Chief, more of them die, haha.
