A lot of the weapons in Halo have what Bungie calls a "smart-linked scope". I presume this means that the weapon has magnifying camera who's image is transmitted directly to your visor/HUD. I personally always thourght of "smart-linked" as a system that prejects the image from the physical scope on the gun onto your HUD (scince having a helmet on hinders your ability to put a scope to your eye and look down it) but that the scope itself actually does the zooming (hence why you can't go into scope view with the assault rifle).
Right. I would assume that the BR and Sniper rifle's scopes do the zooming, but also must transmit the image onto the visor. For weapons that dont have physcial scopes (such as the "new" pistol), perhaps there is a smaller, integrated camera (or scope) that does the same. However, it is part of the weapon and not as prominent as the scopes o the BR and Sniper.

Of course, many weapons have visible scopes like the BR and Sniper Rifle....but ever wonder where the scope is on the Carbine, Rocket Launcher, and Splaser, to name a few?The rocket launcher and Spartan Laser are both big enough to have a fold out scope/sight on the side of them that wouldn't necessarily be visable, and the game simply doesn't support an animation when zooming, but I assume he flicks it out quickly. With Covenant weapons like the beam rifle and carbine I can accept the aliens would have a totally different optics system.
I disagree. The Halo 3 engine was proven to support these type of weapon animations from the Halo 3 beta AR hammer animation. Of course, I'm unsure why it was removed from the final build. It could have been a graphics hog (I would say doubtful), or it could have been deemed unnecessary and distracting. I think if the Rocket Launcer and Splaser had flick-out scopes, we'd have seem them somewhere....whether in game or in pre-rendered images of the weapons.
