When I first got Halo: Combat Evolved I was most impressed by the green alien landscape. Things were quite mysterious and I enjoyed that environment!

When Halo 2 came out I was stunned! The game was and still is one of the most beautiful games I've have ever known and seen. This game was even more mysterious and varied. Master Chief was about the only thing the player could connect with throughout the game when he was in the enemies territorial or in a forerunner environment. Players got this feeling of exploring new worlds as humanity's last hope and saviour!

Halo 3 came and I was astonished by the gameplay and the graphics, but there were too much humanity in there. I didn't see Halo as a military game, I saw it as an adventure game with the feeling of being humanity's only hero! The game still gave that feeling in small amounts, but not like the two prequels.

Now for Halo Wars. I enjoy that game, no doubt about that. But the game is too much humanity and military. Even the Covenant are tactical and responsible. No longer the Sci-Fi badguys I am used to play with.

Now for Halo: Reach. The planet Reach is told to be much like Earth, but I am afraid that Bungie will make the planet identical with our own planet's standards and environment. I hope for more green cliffs and waterfalls. More mysterious places to visit and more dark and gritty wastelands to experience. Hope Bungie will make Halo: Reach more as a Sci-Fi than another military-shooter.

I agree. Leave the humanity as a backstory to be told in the books. I like the games to almost imaginary.

Oh boy... Reach may be a planet completely owned by the UNSC and used as a military outpost in space. *laughs nervously*

May the Forge be with you.

There was plenty of military in Combat Evolved; it just took a backseat to the mysterious ring-world we fought on, which we had absolutely no idea about. I think the problem you seem to have is that as the games (and novels) were released, more and more secrets were revealed, unshrouding the mystique of Halo.

Eh well if we're talking atmosphere, ODST proves that Bungie's art guys have finally learned how to coordinate their color palettes. So I'd definitely expect that out of Reach.

Yeah, I have thought alot about that too. And you're right. It has both made the Halo universe bigger and smaller at the same time :)
