Here is a quick summation for everything that has been stated so far:
Reason why it is a prequel: Halo CE begins just after the fall of Reach, and in the Halo 2 opening cinematic, we can see Reach as it is being destroyed. Why can Halo Reach not occur after Halo 3? Because before the covenant left Reach, they "glassed it", a term used to describe that when the planet is bombarded with plasma that is so hot it literally turns the surface into glass, destroying everything in its wake.
Why is Reach in Halo so important? Reach defines a fine line in the Halo Series. It is where almost all the Spartan IIs are cut down and killed, save for a few. In addition, from this Master Chief will believe he is the last remaining spartan until First strike, where he discovers Linda.
So what can we come to expect from this game? Well, as mentioned previously in this thread, Fred was a Spartan who was on par with John (Master Chief). He ends up living through the whole charade of Reach, leading the Spartan force that was deployed on the ground. What was Master Chief doing? He was in Space, fighting the Covenant there.
Therefore, I predict as follows:
The mission will follow the book Halo: The Fall of Reach very closely, almost identical in structure. Does this have the capability to become a squad based shooter? It is very possible. Only Time will tell on that one.
Overall, Halo:Reach is shaping out to be a fantastic game, and personally I can't wait to try it out myself.
