Microsoft has posted a job listing for a position on a team designing a single server setup for an MMO that is intended to support 300,000 players simultaneously on XBox Live.
Most MMOs have multiple servers for their MMO, so you have to choose the server you want to play on. EVE Online has a single server setup but has never hosted more than about 30,000 players online at any one time. Microsoft intends to have up to 300,000 players all online in the same world at the same time.
Hey! Maybe Halo: Reach will be the most massive online multiplayer game ever created. LOL.
Early on, when H3 was first released, there were times when more than 1 million players were online in H3 Matchmaking. Whoever was working with MS to build out a service which could support up to 300k users simultaneously had nothing, I would guess, to do with Bungie. If Bungie were to build a MMO service ( by service I mean to suggest a network to support such ) they would need the ability to host well over 1 million users simultaneously.
Who knows really, you may be right? The 300k might be a 'alpha / beta' network intended for test purposes with the ability to scale once the service goes live?
