-Gaming is clearly becoming something more for casual play, rather than for hardcore fans.
-High end graphics are being neglected and fast paced gameplay is being ignored in today's economy
-but for big companies, the choice is clear: make a game that is safe rather than making something more experimental.
dont really know a bout a couple points in your thread - the Wii is for casual play the xbox 360 and ps3 are and will always be aimed at the gamer , project natal and ps3 new eye toy thing are just ways of stealing some customers from nintendo.
I own both an xbox and a wii (well the wii is my mum's i actually baught my xbox) when i want to play a proper game like halo i play the xbox if i want to have a different type of fun swinging my arms around (casual gamer) then i play the wii. So there isnt a massive casual gamer fan bas on the 360 for this reason. and seeing as bungie will only make halo games on 360 they will not make it a more casual game.
i very much doubt Halo:Reach is going to become more casual to get more customers (this is the impression i got from your post) the amount of copies the halo franchise has sold why would they change it to become more casual they would lose a big fan base that comes from MLG.
*note i said more casual not "make it a casual game"
*IT IS TOO EARLY TO SAY WHETHER MLG WILL USE REACH - this is a pretty stupid thread but has invoked some decent posts.
*disclaimer: i may have completely misunderstood your thread Lord Revan
You got the jist of my post but not everything. What I meant by gaming becoming more geared towards the casual gamer, is exactly what I meant. The Wii is outselling the Xbox 360 and PS3 by a large sum. An incredibly large sum to be blatantly honest. Microsoft and Sony both are now making a gimmick remote similar to the wii's peripherals in an attempt to gain a wider audience. That there demonstrates how all three companies now are attempting to take gaming more mainstream to acquire a wider audience, one thats comprised of casual gamers and hardcore gamers. After all, even the wii has some hardcore gamers with brawl lovers out there and zelda fans, etc.
Anyway, Halo 3 demonstrated, as has Gears of War 2, a move from a Fast Paced game where one man can, if good enough, kill an entire team, to a more relaxed paced game where teamwork is necessary in order to kill efficiently. The skill gap between players has been reduced allowing those who dont play the game as often to kill those who play it 24/7 and are the best of the best. Its the logical choice for game companies as it is a safe thing to do. It also keeps more casual players playing the game longer since they wont get frustrated as quickly and thereby it will potentially increase DLC sales.
MLG, while it is a company attempting to make gaming something of a sport, is at its core attempting to give games the choice between a slowed down more casual play or a faster paced, older style hardcore game. Whether you like MLG or not, it is beneficial to the community and is at the very least pushing game companies to develop games that have the ability to tweak settings, like in Halo 3, to make the game more competitive.
It sadly has spawned a subculture that seems to think themselves elitists. It is a depressing side effect but elitists would exist anyway and have since the creation of gaming. Halo 2 had a ton of jerks, a lot more cheating, and a bunch of people who attempted to wield their rank as a sign of their skill. Its got everything to do with symbolic interactionism. The fact that it exists even on the internet is amazing in terms of human sociology.
Basically, there are positives and negatives to MLG, but please dont bash it. Respect what it is attempting to do for the industry and overlook those who aren't affiliated with it at all but worship it. They do not represent the company itself.
