Subject: Can't get excited about 'Reach'...

...unless Bungie finally listens to the players outside North America and introduces some sort of proper regional MM, instead of the sucky 'good connection' option that does next to nothing except make you wait even longer for a game that lags badly 70% of the time anyway. Thanks for that.

Don't know about any other folks from Europe or Australia, but I certainly wont even consider buying it if things stay the same. I simply can't be bothered with the frustration.

Your call Bungie. But whatever you do decide please let us know before we spend our cash. Thanks.

"We sleep peaceably in our beds, because rough men stand ready to visit violence upon those that wish to do us harm."

"Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of all those who threaten them."

I hope Bungie totally ignores you. If they prevented people from NA and Europe playing together I'd lose half my team.

whats funny is i live in north america and i dont have a -blam!- connection maybe u should upgrade to something better

Doc: "i'm a pacifist"
Caboose: "your a thing that babies suck on?"
Tucker: "no dude, that's a pedephile"
Church: "tucker, i think he means a pacifier"

So even if it is a great single player offering you won't touch it if Bungie doesn't wall off MP to regional play?

Not to bright my friend. I certainly understand the frustration as I live in Hawaii and get connected with people all over. I have delt with lag from all over the globe friend, but there isn't really much they can do about it without completely t-blam!- down the playerbase for MP.

If you impliment regional grouping there will be less people to play with. Let's face it, the majority of players are in north america, that is the situation.

Hmm, so just because the majority of players are in North America that means everybody who lives outside North America has to suffer?

As a counterargument that kind of leaves me cold. And I don't want it as a fixed feature anyway, but I would like it as an option. Other games (very successful ones) do offer it as an option and it doesn't seem to negatively effect their numbers?

If anything they seem to have 'stolen' just about my entire Halo friends list ! Meh, maybe if 'Reach' followed their example I might just get some of them back?

Or does that not make sense?

As an Australian, I am buying this for the storyline/campaign alone. Multiplayer (as with all the Halo games) is a bonus.

They have released nothing but a trailer and your already criticizing the game comparing it to halo 3? That's quite illogical. If you want to do something than make a suggestion but don't tell a franchise that practically made xbox what it is today that
(you) simply can't be bothered with the frustration.
Sounds like a personal problem. Get a therapist. call the Whaaaaaaaaaa-mbulance. Upgrade your internet speed. I don't care what you do. Just don't come -blam!-ing on the forums.

As an Englishman, I'm not buying something that lasts for a few days. If I'm going to be spending £35-40 I want something to play online, and that works equally as well as other games that do offer regional MM as an option.

How is that an unreasonable request?

  • 06.02.2009 1:13 PM PDT

I see where your comming from. I really do hope bungie does do something to help with your connection, but even so why wouldnt you play the game? You still play halo now, and why would you stop with Reach?

I'm not at all saying that it should be anyway over another, i'm just trying to get you to understand the thought process behind the decision. For people in the US getting caught in games where the host is in NZ, UK or Australia, it is no picnic either, but it happens. I see no evil in a regional option, however you need to remember that unlike several other games out there with MM, Bungie constantly monitors theirs and trying to keep it running as smooth as possible. Unfortunately this has resulted in streamlining, but it is done to keep things running.

Any time you partition off the "pool" of players you run the risk of adversly effecting all involved. I certainly acknowledge the merit behind your idea, however the implementation is the issue.

I don't mean to sound offensive, but because Bungie and Microsoft are american companies, their largest share is in America. It makes sense for them to prioritize for that country. I'm just lucky i live on the same continent (I'm Canadian).

You could have the best connection in the world, but you're limited by the giant communications cable under the sea connecting your continent to ours. :(

Not at all. I was a member of a group of non-North American players who campaigned and pleaded with Bungie to introduce regional matchmaking to Halo3 because of the problems with the system in Halo2.

Having watched bungie ignore our pleas and then watched my whole FL disappear off to other games that do offer it as an option I'm being entirely logical. Because the same thing could easily happen again!

It's not my logic that's at fault here.

True. But then it doesn't happen to them 70-80% of the time... does it?

Which is exactly why nobody on my FL plays Halo anymore. Go figure.

No, I got it from a friend I used to play with, who used comview over a period of several months to show where the hosts we were playing on were from. It turned out that between 70-80% of the hosts we played on were from the US... even with 'good connection' selected.

Is that funny enough for you? As for you caring less... well, that seems to be the problem with Bungie too, so no surprises there then.

Join the SIP now! were a fun and active community that play games the way theyre meant to be played. make friends, have fun and be part of something special! The Spartan I Project

i like that idea to an extent, i think regional MM could be optional instead of mandatory, i like playing with my american friends in SIP and will never give that up.
however, when playing UK only game nights, i experience no lag, not even a hint of it. so id like regional MM, i just dont want halo becoming seperatist

lol at all the americans being whiners because we suggest not playing with them anymore. it'll make less easy kills for them (no way I can kill someone when I have one red bar).

fyi everybody, my connection speed could be over 9000 mb, it wouldn't change a thing if the host is american himself. the datas won't travel faster than light, face it, there is a point where connection hasn't anything to do with lag anymore.
(bad connection = lag... but good OR extremely good connection = same amount of lag unless both persons live close and are using the same connection).

I live in the UK too and empathise with your viewpoint. To other UK players who claim they have no connection issues perhaps you are just not that observant or are not at a high enough skill level to realise. BR shots not registering is a huge problem as is close combat timing issues i.e. shotgun/sword battles and AR melees. I have recently noticed that frag grenades especially are affected and do little damage to opponents even when in very close proximity due to their position on your screen being behind their position time-wise or predicted due to network issues.

I think the game could be improved by altering the weapon functionality and increasing the skill level of certain weapons. For example a single shot BR would be far more reliable and after firing one-shot you would have a better idea of how far to lead to get your shots to register; much more fair than the current BR. Make close combat weapons a little harder to use, perhaps by increasing movement speed or allow for a faster strafe because lets face it when someone gets in a range with a shotgun or sword you're dead 90% of the time. I think litle considerations like that could make a huge difference to online play.
