What?

Lately, there have been a lot of theories floating around about the silhouettes shown at the top of the forum, so I figured I'd throw in my 2 cents. I'm going to go from left to right, and include any notes referring back to previous characters.

Far Left
I would like to get this point out of the way right now. In my mind, there is no possible way that the large humanoid on the far left is an elite. I have multiple reasons for this assumption, listed below.

1. The armor- Sangheili armor has always been shown as relatively smooth and flowing. The outline of this figure, by contrast, is quite bumpy, similar to various armor permutations of Spartans in Halo 3. Also, I believe the character is holding a chaingun in his right hand, which would explain the flowing line just to the left of his leg (an ammo belt trailing from the feeding mechanism).
2. The anatomy - Sangheili also have very feline legs, though adapted for an upright stance. The knee area is bent just like a human knee, but the ankle is permanently bent back to the front, just like the hind legs of a cat or dog. Because of this, elites are digitigrade - they walk on their toes. This causes them to lean forward slightly, even when standing at full upright posture. The silhouette is clearly not bent forward, and the legs seem to have a human shape (though this may be caused by the angle the figure is standing).

So, if I don't think it is an elite, who is it? There are two possibilities. One is that this is an entirely new species, though this is doubtful, since the game is supposed to follow the book. The other, most likely possibility is that this is a Spartan. I personally believe this to be true, and my best guess, due to simple process of elimination, is that this is Will.

EDIT: I realized that I had forgotten one idea that has been mentioned frequently - a marine training officer. Due to the size of this figure, this is very possible, though I feel like that would be a lot less epic than having Will pose with the other 4.

EDIT 2: Sam is another possibility that I forgot to mention, though I ruled him out because of his death on a Covenant warship prior to the battle.

Middle Left
This silhouette is quite a bit smaller than all the rest, even when standing fully upright. This figure is probably either Kelly or Dr. Catherine Halsey, though some of the details would indicate Kelly. These are:

1. The head- Dr. Halsey wore glasses, which she used basically as a heads-up display, projecting images and readouts directly onto the screen. She did not wear a helmet, and had longer than military regulation length hair. The silhouette seems to indicate a helmet being worn, with a visor-like projection on the right of the head. Also, no hair is seen cascading off the head, another indicator of a helmet being present.
2. The legs- The knee joint outlines have texture, and, when viewed closely, are comparable to the joints seen on the figures both to the left and right of this figure. Since we are assuming that a Spartan stands to the left (and the middle figure I will soon show to be another Spartan), one could conclude that the legs are encased by Spartan armor, indicating Kelly to be this figure.

Another point to rule out other Spartans - Kelly was known as the fastest runner among all the Spartan-II's. The build of this figure is slight, which would lend itself to a runner.

Middle
Many forumdwellers vehemently believe that this is John, the Master Chief. Personally, I am unsure. Process of elimination would indicate this silhouette to be John, though the helmet seems to have a larger projection than that seen on the helmet. However, this may simply be an object on his head or a flaw in the graphic (doubtful, as everything else is damn near perfect).

A flaw to this conclusion that has been pointed out many times is that John never actually set foot on Reach. His participation in the battle involved the destruction of a navigation database in compliance with the Cole Protocol. He led Blue Team, consisting of himself, Linda, and James, to the space station on which the ship (the Circumference) had docked. I've managed to find a workaround this conflict. If the game follows the storyline of the book, it would most likely include the story of Blue Team, meaning that John would be in the game.

Middle Right
In an effort to shorten things up, I won't try long explanations for this silhouette. The figure holds a long slender object, which resembles no weapon seen before in the Halo games. It resembles a long, slender knife. Fred was stated to be an expert with combat knives in The Fall of Reach, so I believe this silhouette is Fred.

Interesting side-note - this figure's helmet has the same projection or object as the middle figure, indicating that this might be part of the helmet itself.

Far Right
The most obvious conclusion for this silhouette is Linda, easily guessed by most. The sniper rifle being held is an obvious indicator. The only problem is that she also never set foot on Reach, but the same explanation can be used for the middle silhouette.

Alright, now that you've survived reading that (or skipped to the end for you lazier people), my final conclusion - going from left to right - is: Will, Kelly, John, Fred, Linda.

And please, don't comment if you're just going to complain about the wall of text. I had a point to prove, and lots of evidence to back it up, so skip around if you don't feel like reading the whole thing.

Well, it's all speculation anyway, my theory just has a lot of support and clarification.

The far right one couldnt be Linda beacause she was sent into cryo in the space near Alpha Halo and she was with MC and James on the ship destroying data, so far right is still unkown.

What?

She was sent into cryo after being drastically wounded - this happened at the battle of Reach just prior to Alpha Halo's events, which means she would have to have been at the battle. Also, she was in the book. ;-)

In First strike, they MC picks her up i dont remember where but she was still in cryo after Halo 1, and Halopedia says that shes was not on or near Reach when it was attacked(she was with blue team in orbit, doesnt count)

I addressed that in the explanation for the middle silhouette - if John is included, Lisa should be too, since they both were on that mission only during the battle of Reach.

You are completely correct. I don't understand why people are wondering who the characters are. Read the book and the characters become obvious.

They're coming.. to finish what was started. And this time, no of these threads will be left behind...
He has a right to his own opinion...even if its wrong
Spoken like a TRUE middle-schooler, You win todays "Lets put some bleach in his side of the gene pool" Award. In fact your genes would be the worst THING ever to be included in the Halo 3 package. Insult me more if you like, but be intelligent about it. Evolutions has dealt you a bad hand of cards it seems.

re read the book and see if the main spartans on the ground were described like these 5, ( and if there were even 5 at all)

Could the one on the left be that one armor prototype that the Marines used while training the Spartans?

  • 06.02.2009 2:28 PM PDT

(;3=

i believe dr hasley is the second to left. fred is in the middle. kelly is second to right and the other 2 are either will, isaac or vinh.

That was another idea that I took into account, but I figured that these silhouettes were all from the same time (the battle of Reach). However, that is a very possible identity, as the figure is massive. I'll add that in to the main post in just a second.

It would be sweet to be able to see that armor, I always wondered exactly how it looked.

The Spartan on the Far Left could be the spartan that was apart of John's (Cheif) training group when he was just a kid in the beginning of the spartan program this spartans name was Sam he turned out to be the biggest and strongest spartan in the whole program if you read the book the fall of reach. on when the spartans infiltrate one of the covenant ships for the first time Sam rips apart some blast doors with his bare hands so the rest of the spartans could advance but sadly at this point in time the spartans didnt have their shields put into their armor and Sam was hit with a Plamsa round which wouldnt let him leave back into space so he stayed behind to manually blow up the covenant ship. that is my best bet on the spartan to the far left

I cant wait for the game to come out and i would like to play the beta on ODST

Remember Reach!

I'm so excited for this game... Even though there isn't any information out there yet... I know it will be based on my favorite book in the series!!

$.50 in store credit.

If the middle is chief, a very tall spartan, i doubt that a training officer would be taller than him. I bet far left is Will or Fred.

What?

It might be Sam, but I ruled him out because he was dead before the battle. If the game follows the entire book, including before the battle, it very well could be Sam.

Perhaps not a counter argument, but definitely a different take on the silhouettes:

I posted this on HBO earlier (the first bit is a quote from Psychophan7):

: Instead of being the FPS that we all
: know and love, they're probably going to be doing it like the Battlefield
: series: Some format of different player classes along with large-scale
: battles, for both Campaign and Multiplayer. The player classes idea comes
: from the silhouettes on the project page ; There are very clearly
: different sizes of characters there, with one of them looking to be a
: marine (small guy, second from the left) and another looking to be an ODST
: (far right, sniper rifle).

Having quite a bit of knowledge of the Battlefield series, let me expand on your idea a bit. Judging from the silhouettes on the project page, they look like the staple Battlefield classes (from left to right):

Heavy (Spartan)
Medic (Marine)
Assault (Spartan)
Engineer(?) (ODST/Spartan?)
Sniper (Marine/ODST?)

Picture: http://www.bungie.net/images/games/Halo3ODST/features/img_hea der/haloreach.jpg

-Heavy-
I'm a little skeptical of that one on the far left. What the hell armour would he be wearing? As far as I know, the only Spartan armour present for TFoR was the MJOLNIR Mk V, and that character definitely looks like he comes complete with some crazy extra gear. The weapon he's carrying looks to me like a flamethrower, or perhaps a turret (that little thingy stickin' out from the bottom is throwing me off). The bulky armour still confuses me lore-wise.

-Medic-
I speculate that the second from the left is a medic due to the fact that (1) he/she (probably a she :p) doesn't have an obvious weapon, (2) he/she is tiny (most likely a marine, and (3) if you're going to have a class that plays as somethings as weak as a marine, what else would it be good for (besides recon/sniper)?

-Assault-
This one is a bit more straight forward. Although it's difficult to tell from such a small image, I would bet heavily on the center silhouette being a Spartan in MJOLNIR Mk V armour, carrying an MA5B (god I hope so!).

-Engineer(?)-
This one is the hardest to pick out imo. I'm going with Engineer for this guy because (1) the only obvious "weapon" he appears to be holding could be either a knife (which would probably mean he's more of a spec ops/CQB character) or a wrench/tool (==> ENGINEER!!11!), (2) we already have a potential "Heavy" character so that leads me away from saying this guy would be our Demo-man, and (3) we need an engineer (unless Bungie chooses to make this waaaay more arcady than I'm hoping, in which case...poop). The hard part for me is the fact that his armour looks a little too bulky for a marine, and he looks too tall to be an ODST. This leads me towards a CQB style Spartan character, which isn't too far fetched, but it throws off the classic class structure (Assault usually picks up the CQB-type stuff), and my fingers are crossed for an Engineer anyway.

-Sniper-
This one is perhaps the most obvious. He's holding a SNIPER RIFLE! :P The hardest part about this one is picking which character model will hold this class. I'd guess regular marine, but the silhouette looks a little big for that, so perhaps an ODST (although I would find that a bit silly, ODSTs are teh suck anyway). Who knows though...

Also, if any of you are curious how well a class-based Halo game would feel, I suggest you check out the Homefront mod for Battlefield. They did a pretty good job at incorporating the available Halo cannon (at the time) into a pretty well-balanced and fun game. I'm excited to see some new info on this from Bungie.

I initially ruled out the character on the far left being a marine wearing an exo-suit as in the TFoR novel they were quoted as being next-to-useless for combat applications, too bulky, restrictive to movement and whatnot. However, upon further review, I suppose they would probably be sufficiently capable for becoming essentially a heavy weapons platform (carrying turrets or flamethrowers) as you wouldn't need excessive mobility for such a task.

Personally, I think the Middle Left would be Catherine Halsey. Why? The silhouette itself is closest in appearance to Cortana than any other figure described and Cortana is modeled after Halsey. Even the hair matches that of what Cortana wore during the events in Halo:Ce.

That would mean the center for me, would be Kelly. Think of it. We've had a male leader the entire time in the Halo series. Why not give the girl the led role out at the center for once?

Who knows to be honest. I love the speculation.

  • 06.02.2009 3:02 PM PDT

now I know that the silhouettes are spartans but I would find it cool to break the Halo tradition and instead of a Spartan campaign an Elite one. Its just an idea I have never seen used before unless if you count some levels in Halo 2. It just would seem cool to me to be completely evil and kill off any human or even Spartan that stands in your way! I dont know I just think a evil campaign would be kinda cool.
