I feel a mixture of amusement, disappointment and indignation (mostly the latter two) about the way Frankie's Bungie Weekly Update was received on the Penny Arcade forums. On the one hand, some of the responses in that thread are genuinely entertaining, and the update itself is great as usual. On the other hand, who the f**k do those people think they are?
Pardon my French, but I don't think I've ever had the displeasure of visiting a forum populated by such a cantankerous and repugnant group of people in all of the considerable time I've spent on the Internet. The sheer malevolence leveled at Frankie was almost enough to make me feel ill. Even a mod joined in the "fun" for chrissake.
And though these next few sentences may read like they were lifted directly from the Asskissers' Unabridged Dictionary of Superlative Ingratiation, not a day goes by when I don't think of what an exceptional group of individuals the people who make up Bungie are. Even while busting your collective asses to bring us what will most assuredly be the best game on this generation of consoles (if not ever), you take the time to play an active role in the fan community. No game developer goes or has gone to the lengths Bungie does to reach out to us fans, and I perpetually marvel at your dedication.
So naturally, as you can well imagine, it came as a bit of a shock to see that Frankie was unceremoniously castigated and banned from the PA forums for doing nothing but posting another one of his Updates. (Yes, I am well aware that he was since unbanned, but let me finish...) People who work this hard to create such fargin' cool stuff deserve more respect than that. I personally feel that the staff of PA are obligated to issue a formal apology to Frankie for his unjust treatment. That little testy-toned amendment to his original post is nowhere near sufficient.
Of course, Frankie was a class act in dealing with this unpleasant situation, and I can only assume from his laid back attitude that no offense was taken, and the best course of action is to put this all behind us. -Or- that the man's fit to burst from the seething flames of rage immolating in his gut, poised to inflict hideous vengeance upon those who wronged him.
One of the two.
