These discussions, just like life are about the journey, and not the destination.

"You have enemies? Good. That means you've stood up for something, sometime in your life."

With Sony releasing MAG next year it makes sense that Microsoft would want to 1up them and what better franchise to do so with than Halo? Imagine, possibly hundreds of spartans battling it out.

Evidence so far is that we all know Reach was a training ground for the Spartans, having many of them training against each other. Also we know that Halo Reach will be having a multiplayer beta next year with no announcement on single player.

Thoughts?

Happily married to Fatal_Coin_Vest since July 1st, 2009.

Thank you, Captain K Mart.

Reminds me of Frontlines: Fuel of War. That game had some potential, but nobody played it. I never found an online game in it.

Forever there shall be war, thus forever we shall fight...

Hey man, MAG looks pretty epic, it's one of those games on PS3 that you kinda envy (ie. Drake's Fortune, Infamous, MGS IV, Little Big Planet). I hate Sony's new piece of crap, but some of those games are pretty amazing.

At this point.. who knows. Could potentially be that, would be a strange/interesting concept. A bunch of custom Spartans running around Reach. Bungie took a step into free-world roaming with ODST apparently; so who is to say that Reach isn't just a greater evolution. More people and a bigger world, speculation; anything is possible.

That is what I want to see. A Halo MMOFPS. Keep the game play the same and the with each level you gain you get to control other vehicles or use a different gun/equipment. In my opinion if Bungie doesn't make Halo reach into something new to add to the franchise they will fall behind. A MMOFPS is the next logical step. Give me a full on massive battle everyday all day and save the story for Halo 4. Imagine starting off the game armed only with a pistol and having to kill your way to earning a new gun. Bungie has a very deep leveling system that would translate well with a call of duty style system except would have allot more to unlock when you throw vehicles, armor and equipment into the "perk" system.

Just picture choosing a weapon that you have earned, spawning in your base and running to a newly acquired vehicle depot that was stolen from your enemy, spawn a vehicle that you unlocked and go mess up some noobs. What about flying a pelican full of your buddies ready to jump out and capture a tower to gain access to a closer spawn point next to the enemy base all while hundreds or thousands of players fight all around you in a vast landscape. Pretty cool right?

I know what you are going to say... Its going to lag... But what if it didn't? It would be the most epic game ever. Halo at its best really. Massive battles on the ground and in the sky... Leveling up for years and years (because you know they will add download content)

If I'm right... prepare to lose your job when this game comes out

Nope. It just doesnt add up. MAG is venturing into the relatively untested MMOFPS grounds. It just seems these games take forever to create (Huxley is looking dead). Lag is a large enough problem with 4v4 let alone 100v100. Bungie wont risk the reputation of their only well established franchise on a gamble like this. Expect a very fleshed out online mode reminiscent of call of duty's.

I've been thinking that as well.

Lol, imagine if it was the rumored game that supports 300,000 people? That would be so insane!

But since someone mentioned how Bungie ventured into the realm of free-roaming in Halo 3: ODST, I wonder if Reach will be a free-roam game too..

Hmm.. anyway I can't wait to see what the Multiplayer will be like.

  • 06.02.2009 11:22 PM PDT

In all honesty, it would be cool, but the lag would be epic lol.

Nah. I don't think Reach will be an MMO the world just doesn't fit. MMOs typically have a never ending kinda feel to them where Reach does end with the planet falling. The genre also doesn't jive with Bungie way of telling stories. So Its campaign will not be an MMO.I do think that it will be the BIG gritty War game Halo fans have wanted for a while now though and it may have an MMO esque Multiplayer mode. The battle for Reach was one of the biggest in Halo lore history, so it makes sense that the epic scale of that fight would be translated to the game world. I'm quessing it'll be a squad based shooter. Will use a new engine, and will be epic, tragic, and full of awesome.

No battle is decided in a single moment, although in every battle there arise moments of crisis, on which the result depends. - Carl von Clausewitz

I drink your milkshake!

"If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles." - Sun Tzu, the Art of War

I don't think so, primarily because Microsoft already scraped a Halo Massively Multiplayer game. Then again, they could of scraped it to make room for Bungie.

Wow... I hope you are right, this would be awesome! We should still have the option to play as Elites though.

Massive Action Game is just going to be a tri-hard attempt in my opinion. Greater numbers does mean more enjoyable in most cases, but 256? That's just ridiculous. I hope they don't give in to this new trend with Reach.

POW!POW!POW!

As cool of an idea it is, it would completley ruin Halo, it is just not ment to be played with 200+ people, maybe 30 people for big team would be enough. But that MAG game does look osssssim and i am considering buying a PS3 for that game and GT 5 lol.

Exalted is considered "the highest" because you can't get any bans or warnings of any kind for quite a long time, which is harder than just being a member for a long time.

That's actually not a bad thought...

More (circumstantial?) evidence:

A MMO would require a huge number of players and so far they have said all you have to do is buy ODST to be a part of the Beta. That makes a lot of players ready to help Beta test.

It would be a nice change of pace to have a MMO halo. It's a largely unexplored type of game, but I think the obstacles, such as lag, are easily avoidable. You're not going to just create one large map with thousands of players' every action reported to everyone else. Instead, you could have the map sectioned off into many smaller maps with some limit to how players can move into one space from another. Also, you can have several of these large maps that might have affect one another, but without players actually moving from one to the other easily.

One way to manage such large teams of players could be to introduce elements of an RTS. You start with a formal ranking system as in Halo3, but maybe more complex/refined. If there are two 5 star generals on a team of say 10k players, they'd actually be in command of half of their team or 5,000 troops each. These 5,000 players would get further divided with lower ranked generals heading up the divisions, and then further down the hierarchy you'd go until you have commanders leading groups of 3 to 9 or so players.

How much of an RTS you introduce into the game at the higher ranks is debatable, but it would allow a high degree of control of player/vehicle/weapon placement. At the highest level of command, a player might have an interface similar to risk or axis and allies, where they are mostly managing the positioning/movement/formation of troops. At lower levels of command, the interface would be similar to the Halo RTS game, where you are directing individual units and spawning upgrades/weapons/vehicles. Then at the lowest level of command you'd be simply using your voice chat to coordinate with your 3-9 troops and relay any objectives from higher up in the chain of command. This kind of model for a MMOFPS has a lot of potential, but would require those in command to play regularly and not goof around (though you could easily limit the negative impact on a malicious officer). Of course, just because you have a high rank doesn't mean you wouldn't be playing FPS style a lot. Afterall, the commanding officers would only represent a fraction of the total team. Maybe you would join a team for a week and get to command troops; and the next week you play in a different game with a different number of teams and a different scenario as a basic FPS troop.

I want this game to be something besides an FPS. I wanna see what else Bungie can do.

EDIT: Ok heres what I have in mind.

Bungie should make an MMOTPS. Kinda like that one game Runescape where you do missions or can battle in the wild. For this game you would start out in a spacestation or something. Then if you wanted to just kill and level up, you could go to a Halo ring or a planet with other players. You could also choose to be a Spartan or Elite, since they aren't rivals anymore. Now if you wanted to do missions, then you could go to Captain Keyes and he'd tell you what you need to do and that could be like the campaign.
