Subject: Halo: Reach Graphics Engine. The same as Halo 3, or different?

I've been thinking about this lately - amongst a plethora of other things about Halo: Reach that are possible - and I really want to know if Halo: Reach will be built from the ground up with a brand new graphics engine, or if it will just use a slightly upgraded version of the Halo 3 Engine.

I really hope it's the former because I think that having the best experience possible in a Halo game would also mean having a really nice looking graphics engine. I'm sure Bungie is pretty used to the 360's architecture and are very familiar with it's strengths and weaknesses. With that knowledge, I think it's very possible to reach the utmost potential of the 360 to produce one of the best looking games seen so far on the 360.

Imagine Halo with the quality of graphics such as Gears of War or Killzone 2. Maybe not that extreme, but still.. just imagine it. Wouldn't you by way more immersed into the game? I think I would be.

Anyway, what do you guys think? Will they use a new engine, or use the old engine?

EDIT: I used the search bar and nothing about this particular topic came up.

ODST is Halo 3.

I'm expecting Halo Reach to run on a new engine which will create new possibilities.

Hey! Listen! HEY!- The words of Navi

But Killzone 2 had frame rate issues and Gears had ugly textures.(not hating on them, just saying)

I'm sure it'll be something new.

Better be a different engine.

  • 06.02.2009 10:31 PM PDT

Yeah, I just realized that Bungie uses a new engine for every new game they make.

So, by that trend, it's very possible that Reach will use a new engine.

I hate you so much...

But not as much as I hate the internet.

The idea that they made a band new engine seems kinda of foolish. If the game is coming out in 2010... that doesn't leave much time for development of it & then the game, assuming they started it t roughly the same time they did ODST.

Yeah. I really hope it's a new one though, there is lots of room for improvement in the H3 one.

@Helveck

Just an Average Joe...

I agree with the OP... Even in terms of immersion, Halo 3 had beautiful graphics, and I love Halo 3 for everything that it is, with so many awesome extra things and nearly endless possibilities of fun and excitement... But E3 2006's trailer of Halo 3 was... incredible, yet unfortunately it was toned down.

Hopefully this does not happen again, but even if it the graphics ultimately go untouched... I probably wouldn't even care that much. A Bungie game, is a Bungie game, and they have yet to fail me... So I'll buy it and most likely enjoy it for sure anyway! Lol

I'm pretty sure development started just before or right after H3 came out... its not like they started development yesterday.

I'm not sure if this is how it works but anyway.
When the main code of Halo 3 was done the coders would work on the next big build. So its possible that work began before halo 3 was released.

they could be l;eaning toward a squad based game,in the fall of reach redteam went down to reach while MC and linda went to destroy the ship that failed to launch cole protocol, so it would be like a ghost recon type firstperson shooter mixed wit COD 4 and halo 3

How long do you think this would be before the release?

They only had/have a small majority of people working on ODST. The rest of the Bungie team are at work and have been at work on 2 new projects. One being Reach (I'm assuming) the other being an unannounced game. I'm really doubting that they've started the full production of the second game and are fully focusing on Reach now.

With that said, I'd say they probably have had enough people and time so far to make a brand new engine for Halo: Reach. Of course I could be wrong, but it's still a possibility.

I'm pretty sure they didnt start same time as ODST.
They have said hundreds of times in the past(even before odst was shown) that they were working on secret projects.

We could use Halo 2 as an example of when it was finished and compare it to when Halo 3 was released to give an indication of time.

I'm pretty confident that work began on these new Halo games before Halo 3 was released but I don't know how long before halo 3.

Any of you guys remember the man-launcher thing that was shown in one of the updates about the time H3 was released? My money is that was demonstrating Halo: Reach's engine.

Could you provide a link?

I am not aware of all the limitation of the Halo 3 engine but I would like the net-code to be completely redone, same with forge, many more custom game options where you can almost create a new game, and 60 frame per second. If you can't modify those from the Halo 3 engine then they need to create a new one.

I love the entire Halo series, Halo 2 being my favorite of the games. I think that the universe is compelling and the story is deep, sweeping, and powerful. The hidden layers in the Halo trilogy and rich details of the backstory in the novels are something I love to be lost in, and im greatly looking forward to the story that Halo: Reach will weave. Bungie has carefully and lovingly crafted a mythic tale that will stay etched in my mind until the end.

i dont understand what you mean by that. The E3 2007 trailer showed nothing but actual gameplay and cutscenes from the campaign. Go back and watch the trailer again and watch closely, because i can assure you that ever scene in the trailer actually happens in campaign. You might be thinking of the Halo 3 Believe trailer, which showcased a large battle using painting models and sculptures, or the 60 second tv ad that showed once during the super bowl, because both the 60 second super bowl ad and the Halo 3 Believe trailer did not happen in the game AT ALL, and it was very misleading.

More on topic, it probably will not be on a different engine. The beta for Halo: Reach will be available to download when we buy ODST on Sept. 22, which is only a few months from now. It would be nearly impossible to create a brand new high tech graphics engine, AND develop a full, new game from Sept. 25, 2007, to be ready to be played by Sept. 22, 2009(only 2 years). Expect Reach to have the same graphics as Halo 3. And to me, thats not a bad thing. Im not a whiny moron who cries over graphics. Halo 3 was an amazing game, and its a very pretty, very artistically crafted game.

At least we aren't whiny morons who insult other people for hoping for better graphics.

I think he meant the E3 2006 (?) trailer of Halo 3. The very first one. And I do agree that it looked way better than it does now.

Anyway, it was confirmed by Urk in another thread that the Halo: Reach Multiplayer Beta will not be available for download the same day Halo 3: ODST launches. It will most likely be released in 2010. So, that will mean plenty of time to develop and refine the new engine.

P.S. I do agree that Halo 3 was a spectacular looking game, I just think they are more than capable of building a new engine with all of the knowledge they have now after making Halo 3.

Has anyone but me noticed that the release date for Halo:Reach was placed around the estimated time of the release of the next Xbox? I personally think they want this game to be built from the ground up and placed on the "NextBox" this coming year. Again, just one of my rambling thoughts....

Okay first, they haven't even revealed the next Xbox system.

Secondly, ODST will come shipped with the Halo: Reach Multiplayer Beta. I'm sure they wouldn't give us a Beta to a game for the next Xbox when the Beta comes with a 360 game in the first place.
