Subject: Halo: Reach Graphics Engine. The same as Halo 3, or different?

Okay first, they haven't even revealed the next Xbox system.

Secondly, ODST will come shipped with the Halo: Reach Multiplayer Beta. I'm sure they wouldn't give us a Beta to a game for the next Xbox when the Beta comes with a 360 game in the first place.

Hmm, good point. I guess my theory fails then xD.

I believe it's a new engine and here is why. In an interview and live demo of ODST on IGN. They said that ODST was the first game they ever worked on using a previous engine ever. So that statement right there makes me think they developed a new engine for Halo: Reach.

it better be new

halo 3 visuals are DATED

they are fugly in comparison to newer games

i mean this is going to release 1 year after killzone 2 and probably around crysis 2

the game needs to be light years ahead of halo 3 if it even wants to stay with the competition

ODST is Halo 3.

I'm expecting Halo Reach to run on a new engine which will create new possibilities.
Yeah I think it's safe to say that it will feature a new engine.

i agree. the new graphics on modern warfare 2 look intense, halo wont be able to keep up at all if it stays with the halo 3 engine

Good point.

So, I guess it's safe to assume we'll be seeing Halo: Reach using an all new engine. :)

I just hope that it looks significantly better than Halo 3.

Semper Fidelis!

ALTOIDS RULE

All the halo games have featured the same engine with MAJOR upgrades inbetween every game, this will probably be the same with Reach, a new engine wouldnt be bad though. it could give them even more oppertunities

I'm personally not a big fan of the Halo 3 engine. Hopefully a new engine is under development for Reach. They should call it the Spartan engine!

Yeah, but you have to realize that it's a sequel.

Halo: Reach is a whole new spin-off to the Halo Trilogy. It has the reason to look different and better than the rest. ;)

EDIT: I'm off to bed. It was nice discussing this with you guys and I hope you continue the discussion.

Night. :)

Work all night, play all day.

IF it is a new engine, please make it run at 60 frames per second. Playing a ton of COD then going back to Halo 3 is painful.

I'm not sure if this is how it works but anyway.
When the main code of Halo 3 was done the coders would work on the next big build. So its possible that work began before halo 3 was released.

How long do you think this would be before the release?

Whenever Halo 3 went gold. I think that was a month or two before release.

sig goes where?

Halo: CE was at the beginning of the Xbox's lifetime, Halo 2 was near the end, look at the difference between the engines. I am totally expecting Halo: R to have an updated/upgraded engine compared to Halo 3, even though they are both running on the same console.

Yeah, I just realized that Bungie uses a new engine for every new game they make.

So, by that trend, it's very possible that Reach will use a new engine.

haha know what your talking about first, ODST is using the halo 3 engine

I'd love to be a 10 year old and tell my mom I'm going on an adventure out into the world catching Pokemon, with her full support. Never mind the fact that there are rapists, criminals, and murders out there, or the fact that I may get killed by a Pokemon.

Luckily I have Pikachu.

I do know what I'm talking about, it's you that needs to do a little bit of research.

Halo 3: ODST (emphasis on the 3) is just an expansion to Halo 3. Of course it's just going to be using the Halo 3 engine. I does look slightly upgraded, but not too much.

A game such as Halo: Reach - which has nothing to do with the Halo Trilogy that we know and love - will not be an expansion. It has every reason to use a new graphics engine, and I do believe that we'll be seeing one. It could look very good, or it could look very bad.

Knowing Bungie's track record, I'd say that Halo: Reach will look very good.

i dont understand what you mean by that. The E3 2007 trailer showed nothing but actual gameplay and cutscenes from the campaign. Go back and watch the trailer again and watch closely, because i can assure you that ever scene in the trailer actually happens in campaign. You might be thinking of the Halo 3 Believe trailer, which showcased a large battle using painting models and sculptures, or the 60 second tv ad that showed once during the super bowl, because both the 60 second super bowl ad and the Halo 3 Believe trailer did not happen in the game AT ALL, and it was very misleading.

More on topic, it probably will not be on a different engine. The beta for Halo: Reach will be available to download when we buy ODST on Sept. 22, which is only a few months from now. It would be nearly impossible to create a brand new high tech graphics engine, AND develop a full, new game from Sept. 25, 2007, to be ready to be played by Sept. 22, 2009(only 2 years). Expect Reach to have the same graphics as Halo 3. And to me, thats not a bad thing. Im not a whiny moron who cries over graphics. Halo 3 was an amazing game, and its a very pretty, very artistically crafted game.

I think he meant the E3 2006 (?) trailer of Halo 3. The very first one. And I do agree that it looked way better than it does now.

Anyway, it was confirmed by Urk in another thread that the Halo: Reach Multiplayer Beta will not be available for download the same day Halo 3: ODST launches. It will most likely be released in 2010. So, that will mean plenty of time to develop and refine the new engine.

P.S. I do agree that Halo 3 was a spectacular looking game, I just think they are more than capable of building a new engine with all of the knowledge they have now after making Halo 3.

LOL Yeah sorry I meant 2006, my bad.

I'd have to say same.

They use physics engine from other companies (specifically, the Havok engine). So if that has an upgraded/new version, they'll use that, otherwise, the same.

This guy has it spot on. They also mentioned it in there podcast that just came out.

  • 06.04.2009 9:25 AM PDT

I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that.

There is a difference between game engine and graphic package. I hope you aren't assuming that either will be the same for Reach. If they are the same as they were in Halo 3, Bungie is going to go out of business because the game industry has advanced 3 years since Halo 3 was released.

Trust me, they'll have all new shenanigans for this game.

I've been thinking about this lately - amongst a plethora of other things about Halo: Reach that are possible - and I really want to know if Halo: Reach will be built from the ground up with a brand new graphics engine, or if it will just use a slightly upgraded version of the Halo 3 Engine.

I really hope it's the former because I think that having the best experience possible in a Halo game would also mean having a really nice looking graphics engine. I'm sure Bungie is pretty used to the 360's architecture and are very familiar with it's strengths and weaknesses. With that knowledge, I think it's very possible to reach the utmost potential of the 360 to produce one of the best looking games seen so far on the 360.

Imagine Halo with the quality of graphics such as Gears of War or Killzone 2. Maybe not that extreme, but still.. just imagine it. Wouldn't you by way more immersed into the game? I think I would be.

Anyway, what do you guys think? Will they use a new engine, or use the old engine?

EDIT: I used the search bar and nothing about this particular topic came up.

hey instead of cluttering up forum space why not just look i alrady posted about this
