Due to the argument that occurs when a game in released over it's ranking system (the Halo 3 forum has had a lot of disputes over the matter) I thought this simple poll would be a great way of establishing views before the need arises. While Bungie don't often think polls are representative I included a poll just to get a general feel of people's stances, feel free to express where you stand in the hope Bungie will see, acknowledge and take proposals into consideration.

Remember to comment if you feel you have something to add and/or wish to defend your stance!

How would you like the ranking system to function in Halo: Reach?

1. Would you like the system to be that of Halo 3 with a True Skill system (calculates off of past performance)?

2. A one way system rewarding length of play like in Call of Duty?

3. A system like Halo 2 that calculates off winning and losing via points needed to rank up, points are lost for poor performance and gained for better performance, this dictated going up and down.

4. EXP only system which equates to a general rank (e.g general), much like the symbols accumulated via EXP but with no level in the process.

5. No ranking system

6. Other (please explain your proposal)

Please give your thoughts and let's have a civil discussion. I know many of you may not want a ranking system at all something I understand so explain yourselves and if you have a proposal for a new system also feel free to post it!

COD system is an exp system btw.

I prefer the Halo 2 system over any other ranking system that I have encountered.

Best Song ever: You Cant Quit Me Baby by Queens of the Stone Age

Also Guns and Roses are the biggest load of pish-posh ever

Id like it to function so that people dont whine about it on the forums.

Wether that exists, I dont know.

Kind of the same but not entirely. COD uses a system that is EXP based but relies on game performance, it only goes upwards though. Halo's EXP system accumulates to a global rank and is based on wins and loses only.

Also I do realise COD uses a hidden version of the True Skill system.

I'd like to see the Halo 2 ranking system to make a return in Reach, but perhaps with a twist.
If it had some sort of "skill-ratio", your "ratio" is determined by the difference between your highest and lowest skill.

Playlist deletion is the only problem, but it would still work. You'd have to get good at all playlists if you want the highest rank.

  • 06.03.2009 6:21 AM PDT

i'd like to see the COD system b/c there won't be cheaters and boosters and second accounters.

a COD system with a hidden trueskill makes the most sense. people wouldn't start second accounts b/c they wouldn't want to lose all their stuff, but they would still get matched with evenly skilled players based on the hidden trueskill. whatever they decide to do, i hope it's better than the boost-fest we have that's halo 3

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

Yeah, Trueskill is fine with me as long as you can't see your rank.

Everything is interesting if you go into it deeply enough.

I want the skill system to be set up so that I can get to the top, and only I can get to the top.

I don't really care how the ranking system works, to be honest. Maybe a mix of Halo 3 and Halo 2?

Current system. It needs some tweaking, but in my opinion it is the best indicator of skill and provides achievable goals that actually require effort rather than just playing a lot.

I wouldn't.

It is pretty much a given that Trueskill will be used in some form or another. All in all it works well but keep in mind that the system is customizable. I think a slightly altered version of what H3 uses would be fine. I would actually like the brakes taken off the system a little bit so players reach their "trueskill" quicker. Currently players are handicapped for the first 50-100 games. I would like this removed or lessened to try and keep very skilled players from beating up on sub-par opponents for game after game. I don't care if players can get to their highest skill in 10-20 games if it means they don't get to pick on less skilled players for 100's of games.

I also would like any kind of EXP reward uncoupled from skill level. IMO, having to attain a certain skill level to get a certain perk is a bad idea. Much like Bungie did when they created playlist rank where it is only EXP based.

While I agree this ia an issue isn't it one that could be easier solved via the Halo 2 experience system? The True Skill system can be manipulated, users could purposefully lose huge amounts of games to attain a "rank lock" therefore meaning they can constantly beat up the lower skilled. If a points based system was established it would be much easier to push users up the table for the first 20 or so ranks and then increase in difficulty afterwards to establish the good players for those average.

Yes players could 'de-rank' but that is a waste of time and players would eventually grow bored of having to quit 20 games to beat up terrible players for 5 or so games. This could be created if the first few ranks were hard to go down from but easy to reach something the True Skill system couldn't easily create.

I'm personally in favour of a revamped Halo 2 system where it is slightly easier to reach level 30 but from then on becomes increasingly difficult so that only the best of the best can reach the coveted 50. I don't think a system that accelerates the ranking process such as your refined proposal of Halo 3's True Skill is ideal, level 50 needs to be representative of the very best and a small number of games cannot accurately chart skill in my opinion.

However I'm still thinking that having ranks entirely hidden could be beneficial but I doubt such a direction would be taken due to our innate needs to win and prove ourselves...

EDIT: Wow, I'm actually very surprised, current poll results show the COD ranking system is the one most popular from the limited votes so far. It has 10 votes while the Halo 2 system is trailing with only 5. The poll in in an early stage but on Bungie's site where I expected to find many players who are more "hardcore gamers" I'm amazed people are opting for a system not showing a person's true skill and instead just making the game a chilled out experience. I can understand why people would vote in such a way but it isn't the direction I expected the poll to go!

Think the Call of Duty system offers weapon customization I don't want to start with an AR I want to start with a Silenced SMG it would be cool but it would take time overall it would be worth it to me.

Screw TrueSkill. There's too much of a skill gap between players at any one level, and a 50 can be obtained in a day which encourages new accounts. A 35 might be decent if you actually had to work for it.

Keep the red flag flying high
Coz Man United will never die!

You get exp for medal, e.g 1exp for a double kill, 2 for a triple kill etc. Then you could have 3 for a killing spree. Maybe a 10 exp bonus if you win the game. Also, 5 if you plant the bomb, capture the flag, etc. Also 5 deaths in a row mean you lose exp. I would keep the skill system, but you have to get over a certain number of exp in a game to go up a skill level. Maybe 200 exp in a game to go up 1 skill level. However like in Halo 3 if you lose really badly it could go down a skill level.
Recruit 200 exp
Leiutenant 2000
General 2,000,000 add others in between.
The only thing is Bungie would have to be extra careful for boosters. Any thoughts?

Sent the map 11/27. Hope it all goes well.

I like the ranking system Halo 3 has, but I'd rather not have rank shown period. Only allow the playlist military rank to be shown like in Halo 3, but let everyone be left out on what their true rank is. That way, people would enjoy the games without having to worry about your rank.

Keep the ranking system, but don't show us our rank. The games would be good, the people who want CoD4's ranking system would enjoy it(rewards players for wins and play time). and people wouldn't boost because they'll have no way of telling what their rank would be. Everyone would assume they are good. Leave the desicion on who the best player would be to a tournament or something.

That's my 2 cents.

I voted other, for one reason. They should use the H3 ranking system, but with something new. The TrueSkill Ranking system has a bunch of information about your rank that Halo 3 does not tell you. It knows how many wins you are away from ranking up, ranking down, what ranks you haveto beat to rank up, how many wins or losses you have on that rank, etc. This info should be shown to the player! In some format at least! It would be a LOT less frustrating to a LOT of people if the system simply tells you all the info, and adapts to your next win or loss. Say the system tells you' 4 wins in a row to level 50", and then you lose and it tells you "6 or 7 wins in a row away from your 50" so that you at least have a general idea of where you stand on your rank. This would help a lot of people calm down who are trying to rank and are getting frustrated with never knowing what is really happening with their rank. i.e. those times when your 'rank locked' and win 14 or 15 in a row and wonder just what the hell is going on? The game should tell you if you need 50 wins in a row to rank up one level, it really should. Even a rough estimate, just something!! I know a lot of you guys will agree with me on this, it just makes sense. More than often ill hear from my friend "Yeah, im 1 win away from my 50 in mlg, i got 5 wins in a row on my 49." Then he rejoins my lobby after the game "FKIN B****-blam!-!!! I lost 1 game on my 49 and now im a 48! F THIS GAME!" If the game told you a little warning or something just so that you knew! "Warning - 1 loss away from de-ranking, 4 wins to rank up." Something like that would make a lotta sense. I have several friends and tons of xbl friends who have dropped this game entirely because of the ranking system, and not ever knowing the information that the ranking system does. This could only help the online ranked experience. You could also have the option to show/hide the indo if you play on your 50s a lot. Thoughts? Someone reply directly to this please. Personally I think it's a good idea, ive talked to a lot of people about it who feel the same way.

Glass Galaxies - a theme for bungie.net

Per audacia ad astra. Halo Reach | Destiny

Take the current Halo 3 system (all levels, exp and ranks), replace/modify the TrueSkill implementation so it works more like the Halo 2 system. As for EXP ranks, I think a system more like that of CoD would be good, perhaps combined with the current Halo 3 EXP system; I like the idea of being awarded EXP for getting kills and stuff, rather than just winning games, but I still think you should be awarded for winning.

A rough idea of an EXP system:
Each rank is the same as the Halo 3 counterpart, but the EXP required to attain it is multiplied by 1500. You gain 1500 EXP for winning a game, 500 for losing (for staying 'til the end), 1000 for drawing, -1500 for quitting, and different smaller amounts of EXP for getting medals/kills/assists.

I would like for in-game stats to matter when your ranking up. Or the Halo 2 system.

Halo 2 (it was difficult to get a 50)
It was impossible without modding/standbying etc. I think that while the system worked it was too hard to get to level 45 and above therefore it was flawed. 50 should be near impossible to attain but level 45 should be very hard but attainable by good players, generally very few 45s were legit, legit 45s were ridiculously good (the skill level of what one would consider level 50 standard). I guess that the cheating involved did ruin a near flawless system but I'm not entirely convinced.

I wouldn't mind no ranking system at all (or for ranks to be hidden) and for there just to be EXP, I guess much like the COD system or Halo 3's social games. What are people's views on that?

I never did play Call of Duty 4 online but my friends have only said good things about the ranking system so I wouldn't mind seeing that ranking system in a Halo game to experience something different in a familiar environment, my friends have also told me how much they like the perks in Call of Duty 4's online multiplayer, maybe we will see something like perks in Reach's online multiplayer, I sure hope so, I would love to have a more customisable Halo experience online.
