Subject: Halo: Reach's ranking system; how would you like it to function?

Come check out the The Christian Halo Union. Whether you’re looking for fellowship, intelligent discussion, positive gamers, or maybe you just want to have fun, you'll find it with us. With over 650 members and counting, we're the most active Christian group on Bungie.net.

I liked Halo 2's ranking system. It was challenging. Halo 3's system makes it too easy to rank up, from what I've seen. Anyone with some decent skill can get to 50. This probably keeps people from cheating, of course, but it makes it less rewarding for the rest of us. Of course, it was nearly impossible to rank over 40 in Halo 2 due to the massive amounts of cheating that went on.

I never played halo 2 unfortunately, so can someone explain to me what the difference is? I would like a CoD exp system, basically because it would shut everybody up about having to carry people. as well as stopping quitting, because people get experience whether their team wins or not, which I think is fairer on everyone.

This is my understanding, it may not be entirely accurate but it should give you the general gist.

Winning gives positive experience, experience counts towards your level and can go up and down (not to be confused with EXP points in Halo 3). Losing gives negative experience. The better you preform the more positive experience you get/less negative you get. Killing higher levelled players gains more experience while getting killed by lower levelled players loses it. It is complicated but takes in to account game performance more than the True Skill system and is based on solely the game not the matches beforehand.

I think the level 50 aspect is why so many people want to countinue playing, but why so many stop. theres so much -blam!- talking and ''Itz Mlg'' , its stupid. Best way to do it, is have a social rank (based on exp alone) and a ranked rank (based on win percentage alone). Then you will have no -blam!- second accounts, with -blam!- names, no ''I sell 50s'' either. just something straight foward. win 1 game go up. win 2 games go up. ect ect.

A ranking system with skill, but that has EXP that you get by killing people, not for winning. Just really because noobs can't get carried to a higher skill and even if you have noobs on your team you have an OK chance of ranking up.

thats why cod, in my view, is average though. people just run around getting kills, which gets exp, and so its not a team game, noone really cares if they win or not, just the ammount of helicopters they can call.

They should however be a little more awarding for those on the losing side with a positive kd. If the team loses, and you have some moron with -10 and the rest have +1. then you dont go down, or get penalised.

It will depend on what the game turns out to be. Hopefully something original, Hopefully something Bungie :)

I think that trueskill should be used for matchmaking only to balance as best as possible the games.

I think that exp should be decided by how well you play{ie kills to deaths assists sprees multikills headshotsetc}and if your team wins or loses.

I think that they should do away with putting a rank and a high skill on your service record because it's only purpose now is to encorage flame sessions on people with gold bars and since so many people have bought 50s even if you didnt it doesnt carry that much weight.

For those of you who want show people how good you are there should just be leaderboards.

No ranking system is perfect and or can please everyone but if the community makes its voice heard and bungie listens maybe they can make something that pleases most of us and either way im sure the game will be fantastic and we will forget about rank when playing it.

I don't like the idea of a CoD system or an EXP system because it make reaching a level not as exciting. Getting gold guns legit and 10th prestiege is really that great, compared to getting all level 40+ in every playlist. If you don't want rank play social. Honestly though, I don't think you should even be able to see the other players ranks in social, but whatever.

Yeah, Trueskill is fine with me as long as you can't see your rank.

No problem with seeing it really in my opinion. I don't think you should see it in social though, and your social stats, games, and EXP should not be tracked.

No, because no one cares about your rank in CoD. I have/had several friends on top 20 teams, and of 3, only one was a tenth prestige, and they would not assume someone is good or bad based on rank.

I can assure you that would be much much worse. They had it originally on Halo 2 and to say the least it didn't go well.

What about instead only showing your rank privately and on Bungie.net to avoid flaming in game?

An invisible Halo 2 style that is used for matching you up for a close game comboed with an experience rank system that just looks cool as you rank up.

  • 06.04.2009 2:41 PM PDT

Yes, I loved Halo 2's ranking system. I remember getting to a 16 and thinking "WOW I'm a 16!!" Seeing a level 30+ was rare, and you knew that said person was very good.

Please Bungie, no more easy ranking up. It's more rare for me not to see a 50 than to see one, and that's not right.

Yeah tom now that you mention it leaderboards are a bad idea, but this is the type of community cooperation that we need bungie cant make a system we want unless we tell them what we want.

I don't want the COD system implemented, I hate it on COD when I see some 4th prestige with like 0.6 k/d. I personally don't want to have someone at the highest level with a 0.5 k/d and has a AR as his TOD.

You don't get ranked locked, this week on my other account It was a 49 for so long. I won 15 doubles games in a row, now I have another 50. COD is for casual gamers that want to feel like they are the best.

Keep the red flag flying high
Coz Man United will never die!

A system where you are rewarded for kills, medals and wins. Should introduce challenges. Also keep the skill system.

I think the Halo 3 system is the better of the three. I have played Call of Duty, Halo 2, and Halo 3 alot.

I find, contrary to most people's ideas of Halo 3 being easiest to rank up in, that Call of Duty is the one that is most (too) easy becasue it doesnt take much skill to rank up. You dont have to win so many games in a row; all you HAVE to do is run around and shoot and rank up, regardless if your team wins or loses, or how well you did.

Halo 2 wasn't hard to rank up, but it confuses me. I bought Halo 2 after i had played Halo 3 for a while, just to try out the old SWAT playlist. I got dragged into alot of Team Slayer games and we won most of them. Im not sure how many games I have won, or how many games I lost, but I made it to a skill level of 29. I know it was from the wins/losses, but Im not sure how weighted the wins or losses are.

Halo 3 is my favorite because it is simple. Not all the calculations and statistics that go into when you rank up and how weighted so and so ranks and wins are, but I enjoy the fact that it tells you when you are going to rank up, and if your skill level is above that of your experience, you will rank straight to the next level instead of getting to grade 3.

I play Team SWAT to rank up in Halo 3, and i made it to 45 on my first account. Though i started off in SWAT without much skill, I easily managed 10 skill in 7 games. I got better and better until i got to a skill of 22, and i hadnt lost any matches so far. I won 23 games in a row being MVP in each, and stayed a 22. The next game we lost by one point, but I was still MVP. I went all the way down to an 18, and no matter how many games i would win, i would hit 22 and stop. This acount had roughly 700-800 exp before i started playing SWAT.

I created a new account and started playing SWAT first, and made it to skill 30 in 27 games. After 30, I only ranked up once every two or three games, though I had still won every single match on that account. I got to 45 and won another game and went to a 47. It happened again to give me a 49. I then went on to win 10 or so more games and couldnt get my 50, but lost one game and went back to a 45. I won a total of 97 SWAT games with 1 loss, and I couldnt get my 50.
That is my best example of personal experience, to all those who say they get skill blocked that they DEFINITELY arent alone.

So I say Halo 3 system would be best, but please work on whatever in the system blocks you from going up. It is the only real flaw I see in this ranking system.
Thanks for taking the time to read all this, guys. Have a good day!

If you have a complaint about the game, just take a step back and remeber how lucky you really are to even be in possesion of it when compared to the millions of people suffering around the world with not even a roof over their heads.

Have the skill divided into categories, base and extraneous.
Every gametype takes into account the following values which count towards the base skill across all playlists:
-TrueSkill
-KDR
Each gametype with a unique skill set gives a value to the players ability in that skill set and applies that value as a modifier to the base skill set so that they have a different displayed skill in that playlist than just the base skill.
-Team Games: Assists and % score contribution are taken into account.
-Objective Games: Objective scoring taken into account.
-Melee Games: NO BASE SKILL TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT. TrueSkill & KDR individually measured.
-KoTH/Oddball: Wins/Losses.

This system would stop people skill 50 in say, doubles, being able to come in as a skill 1 in Lone Wolves and dominate.

Determine skill in a series of bot matches of varying difficulty and gametype permutations before allowing the player from going into matchmaking. This would stop boosters from ruining new player's experience and also stop them from breaking the validity of the skill system.

Also, in team games, instead of trying just to have everyone the same skill, Just try and find matches where each team's total skill values are equal.

The experience system should be based on a per kill basis and should be more exposed in the menus, so that people actually care about it. This could be made interesting as it could mean that modifiers could be applied to the experience gained per kill when you get multi kills or killing streaks.

Well I will have to go with the Halo 2 1st ranking system before the update it was a lot harder to rank up. But you can still bring back all the new stuff from Halo 3 in there but just make it harder to rank up from level 1-50. Not like in Halo 3 how it doesn't get hard in till you get to level 35-50 because in Halo 3 now all you see are 35s and up. But most of them are 40s and up in Halo 2 it wasn't like that at all. Dude when i got my Halo 3 I was a 39 in lone wolf in less then a week of playing Halo 3 I got that way to quick in Halo 2 it took me forever just to get to a 28. I mean in Halo 2 1st matchmaking system it took forever just for people to get to level 24. Dude I still remember looking it up on the internet for bungle it took people at least 2-4 weeks to get a 24 in Halo 2 and that was in Team Slayer. And dude don't forget it was so hard that people that suck at the game had to mod there xbox just to get there level up that's when you know that's its a good system when people have to try to mod there xbox just to get a rank in Halo 2. But like I said they can bring back the EXP. and the Army Ranks from Halo 3 but just make it harder to rank up because the way it is in Halo 3 now it just sucks sorry but it does. Because its way to easy for anybody to look like they are good but when they really suck at the game compare to other people come everyone I know you know what I mean you look at there service record it shows that they have a high level but are they really good or did they just rank up high by playing with some of there high ranking friends. But any way that's all I have to say I'm sure there more but I don't feel like saying it but see later dude. : )

Microsoft owns the Halo name. Microsoft's ranking system is TruSkill. Halo: Reach is Microsoft. Halo: Reach uses TruSkill.
