It is as equally difficult for me to prove that his clone is alive as it is for you to prove that his clone is dead.

I hunt for the Prophet of Contentment, the San 'Shyumm that murdered my son, and stole his birthright, his Energy Sword. They call our species Heretics. They claim to all that our tongues sting, our words a vile poison that feeds on the unworthy. I have seen the true face of Heresy. The head of a gallant warrior lay on the ground. His neck scorched and blistered, scarred by his own blade. I shall retrieve the weapon, and drive it through that bastard's heart! Punishment for his sins is nigh.

Id doubt Buck is 7 feet tall.

I know it's a long shot and some of the finer details don't add up but they're both 42 and dedicated to the fight.

What most of us know (the one's that have read the books) is that the Spartan candidates were abducted and replaced with flash clones. As far as we know all of the clones died, but what if one was lucky enough to live past their illness?

Buck, the ODST gunnery Sgt in Halo 3: ODST is a close match for John's clone. The only difference is the where they live or lived. But we don't know for certain if John was actually born on Eridanus 2.He may have been born on draco 3 (like Buck) and then moved to Eridanus a few years later.
Then John was abducted and the flash clone was put in his place.

It also says on Bucks character profile that if he was any better, he'd be a Spartan.

Remember, Bungie is well versed in the art of mis-direction.

I know it seems far-fetched, but then so is the subject of a race of highly advanced superbeings that built 7 enormous rings in deep space.

Just so0 you know, through all the slipspace travel Master Chief is accutally 21

Recon armor was not gifted or bestowed upon me. I earned it through blood, sweat, and tears. Road to Recon complete, on to the next challenge. Halo 3: 1750/1750, ODST: 1000/1000, Reach: 1400/1400.

I have to put my vote in for his clone dying.

I love Halo, I have played it since the beginning, even though I may not have had Xbox Live back then. Marathon is also a pretty good game.

Thank You Bungie! For the best games and Recon Armor. Also thanks for the early access to the Halo: Reach Beta!

This account was hacked and I now have a new account.

I think this would be unlikly, but it could be his clone.

But then wouldn't his voice be the same? Then again maybe not the augmentations may change his voice.

Subject: Could "Buck" Edward (ODST), be a surviving clone of John-...

Here are the details for cross-reference:

John-117, or as most know him the Master Chief.

Birthplace: Unknown
Year of Birth: 2511 (Unconfirmed)
Lived: Eridanus 2 (Length of stay unknown)
Previous estimation of age: 42

John was abducted/recruited at the age of six from Eridanus 2 by Dr. Catherine Halsey and placed in the Spartan 2 program.
A flash clone was put in his place to prevent any suspicion from his parents.

Catherine Halsey later read a file that stated the clones had all died, but this file was supposedly composed by either ONI or Colonel Ackerson, both of which she has a very poor relationship with.
(So this section is still up for debate).

Colonel Ackerson's moral compass could be called into question when it concerns the Spartans as he was quite surreptitious in his procurement of Kurt-051 in the Ghosts of Onyx. So he is more than capable of being involved, somehow, with the flash clones.

ONI, as we all know, have access to highly advanced or extremely rare technology, the Slipspace launchers on Earth, reach and Onyx being a prime example.

Edward 'Buck'

Birthplace: Draco 3
Year of birth: 2510 (Confirmed)
Lived: Draco 3
Age: 42

The timeline of the theory:
John is born on Draco 3 and then his family moves afterwards to Eridanus 2. He is abducted and his clone is put in his place to avoid suspicion. The clone, somehow, inherits John's unique streak of good fortune and survives.

With the rise in violence from the insurrectionists, the clone + family moved back to a planet they know and feel safe: Draco 3.
The clone is raised, becomes a student and then enlists in the UNSC Marine Corps before becoming an ODST.

Names
The names used by both characters are obviously different, but 'Buck' could simply be a nickname and his surname could be Edward.
Example: John Edward (The psychic/medium on TV)

Voice
As already pointed out both the characters voices are different. But we have a number of possible explanations for this:

The condition that almost killed the clone, affected his voice box
The augmentation process changed John's voice box.
Previous injuries sustained in battle.

Height

John's augmentation.

No arguments for the case? Mmmm...maybe I'm starting to make sense to all you sceptics.

  • 06.09.2009 2:21 AM PDT

About his name- its possible that the clone, not knowing it was a clone, left Eridanus before it was glassed. After his family died when the planet burned, he chose to change his name so it wasn't a constant reminder. Just a little idea- and I think this is one hell of a longshot to begin with.

Posting on bungie.net should require that the user has had to have read a chapter book all the way through.

That was after the enchantments.

They probably didn't classify the augmentation as steroids.

But still I think this theory is so far fetched that Bungie didn't even think of it.

I suppose that's also possible, could even be a twin.

If he was, then he would have been recruited for the Spartan II program as well, seeing as how they'd both be ideal candidates.

PS - Buck's full name is Edward Buck.

I'll say one thing here so you may reply, in the books, it is stated that John is born on Eridanus II.

my new GT is Moth Zero

I just think its funny how so many people that posted in here got so bent out of shape and flamed Max, but all they said was, "They aren't the same height!" and "They have different voice actors!" Every single person that came in here made an argument that has been shot down dozens of times. And I know, cause I looked through everyone's post.

Now Max admits that this is a shot in the dark, so cut him some slack. Besides, it's fun to speculate.

Yes, there is a lot of hard evidence that proves Buck isn't a clone. Nobody said that information was false. But considering how willy Bungie is, I wouldn't put it past them

  • 06.09.2009 9:48 AM PDT

Thanks for having an open mind.

As Behemoth states, I've already admitted it's a long shot. But you do have to admit, it would be an interesting twist in the story.

Formally Rogue Spartan

ALL OF THE CLONES DIED IN THE BOOKS

There are those who said this day would never come, what have they to say now? --Truth

Seeing how Buck is 42 and an incredibly good soldier, im guessing he was one of the 75 kids who wasnt taken for spartan training due to budgetary reasons

Sounds convincing but I don't see it being possible.

  • 06.10.2009 2:03 AM PDT

I know it isn't a popular or easy to believe theory, but then just look at the debate surrounding the identity of the taller Spartan on the Halo: Reach forum.
Everything we know tells us it's Sam, but that also goes against everything else we know about him.
He died long before the Reach incident but he's still the best possible candidate for that Spartan.
