Being a huge Halo fan (I just like 2 minutes ago signed up for the site), I was just thinking about posting this and seeing if anyone else agrees. I loved Halo on xbox, it was great all around. In the PC version the Multiplayer absolutely sucks. The levels are way to big, and add insult to injury the servers only allow a max of 16. Is this bad? No. But they made the levels so big that 30 would have been perfect. Add to the lackluster multiplayer (that was incredible on Xbox), the framerate drops when like 3 people are on screen. Dont say its my PC or network connection, because chances are that my PC and Internet connection are not the problem (they rock). The patches didnt help either. Im sorry but gearbox really let bungie down, HALO PC sucks.

If you dont like PC dont play it....that simple. Some of us put up with those minor problems to enjoy just killing eachother. Play on XBC if you dont like PC but like X-BOX

Graphics have nothing to do with it. The levels are just too big for 16 players and the framerate drops are just unexcusable. It even happens in single player. My PC can handle it, trust me.

Actually, the Single Player levels should slow down your computer a lot more- from the huge numbers of polygons, and the multiple enemies...

Some of the levels are smaller than say "Death Island" which is pretty darn big. But being that big affords things like crouching fuel rods shots and hidden snipers. Plus having the freedom in a Banshee to fly around and come out of nowhere to suprise the guy camping in a tank is great fun on "big" maps. I know you believe that you computer is more than "adeqate" , but I must ask... did u build it? If so what are your specs (specifications) of your system. Maybe there is one or two small problems keeping you from enjoying the full effect of the game. If you dont like the "big" maps I suggest learning the names of the smaller ones. So that way you can get what I call the "arena" feel of you game. A LOT of first person shooters are VERY cramped small maps that afford more intense instant fighting. Instead of the larger more "strategy" based maps. Maybe you should also try to use "Vsync", or set you graphics options to 60fps (frames per second) so that you get a more constant frame-rate. I really hope you reconsider your standpoint on the fact that Halo PC sucks. Though I believe also that gearbox could have done a MUCH better job at porting it; It is too late now to change what has been done. Lets just hope that Microshaft doesnt hire them again. I look forward to seeing your machine specs, and hope that you will find the bliss most of us have playing this game online.

My PC runs HALO Like a dream, your performance loss is somewhere in your computer whether it be your graphics card or something else. It is typical for people with slightly above sub-par comps to BLAME THE GAME WHEN IT'S THEIR COMPUTER. My framerates are SOLID AND SMOOTH THE ENTIRE TIME AND ALL THE SETTINGS ARE MAXED OUT. Why? Because my PC doesn't suck. Since Halo runs perfectly fine on my comp your point becomes pointless.

Can you list the computer specs because that would help us find what is wrong with the game.

It depends on a lot of things. I have a brand new computer (256 MB graphic, 512 MB RAM Nforce chipset, 512 kbps adsl etc.) and Halo runs smooth but it looks like -blam!- because I have to run with the lowest graphics possible so it remains smooth and playable. It's because Gearbox screwed up not because of the computers.

You need a powerful graphics card to go with that, just because it is 256 megs of ram dont mean anything. You need at LEAST a geforce 5700 Ultra to run halo in high settings in 1040x960. The game is highly graphics intensive, if it where the games fault my game wouldn't be running perfectly like it is right now. I run in 1600x1200 everything maxed out and I don't miss a beat.

Hey, another Halo bashing thread. My favortie... ¬__¬

Has anybody ever noticed how Gearbox's port and Westlake's port pretty much operate the same in terms of being resource hogs, even though they were coded for different platforms by two different companies? I think it is not the fault of one developer or another. Halo is simply the victim of circumstance.

I see all this useless finger pointing at Gearbox on a daily basis, yet I don't see anybody saying Westlake did just as horrible a job. Maybe if you people would take a moment to realize that this game was not built from the ground up like UT2004 (or some other sparkly, spiffy new game) you'd get a sense for why Halo PC turned out the way it did. It's a port (an OLD port, at that), thus the performance is not going to be on par with your expectations if you are comparing it with other modern games. I don't know why people freak out if they can't run it at the highest possible settings and deal with a little lag on the Internet (of all places! :O ). I've had one person tell me he gave up on halo because he couldn't run it at 1600x1200 resolution and refused to play any game below said resolution! 1600x1200! On Halo! O_o A particularly stubborn individual perhaps, but a quality illustration of my point, nonetheless. Then again, the dude who posted above me just said he's running at 1600x1200, so it's obviously not impossible... just not realistic for the majority of machines out there. ;)

Halo is one of the best games I've ever played and I am grateful to be playing it on a PC. I also look forward to playing it even after Halo 2 makes its splash in the gaming market; doubly and triply so if the later is never ported to PC.

...A huge Halo fan for sure, how many years did it take for you to sign up?

"The levels are way to big"

...good thing there still are the small ones...
Really nice pointless points...

[edit] stupid thing disregarding tabs..

HaloPC doesnt suck. Certain game flaws will have you leave with a very sour taste in your mouth, but the extra vehicles, banshees for MP, weapons, and maps make it shweeeet.

Halo for the PC will never live up to the xbox version, it just cant IMHO. You said you dont like the maps but the maps that came with the PC version are my FAV!!! Death island, danger canyon, Ice fields, Infinity, geyrophobia, Timberland, oh my!!..........I could only dream those and the extra weapons could be in xbox. If they were, it would be amazing. But they aint.

Its very easy to get let down by PC after spending so long playing xbox version, but it far from sucks. You just need a really good comp and web connection to enjoy it to its maximum.

i agree with gruntkiller666, you want to complain about this stuff then dont bother, go ahead and pay an extra 50 bucks a month for xbox live, when instead you only pay for internet access for halo on the pc. Lag is caused by ping, choose low ping servers, stop complaining.

I like the big maps it allows you to sneak around. It is also nice to play a game where teams can attack in waves or a lone player can sneak and steal the flag. Framerates for me in multiplayer haven't been an issue even on full servers, but don't expect to run everything on high with a large resoultion unlesss you have a high end card. Hosting 30 people on counterstrike which has a 5 year old game engine is hard enough and you expected gearbox to do it with a directx 9 game? I'm actually pretty impressed with Halo's netcode. You might think it was better on xbox but the display for a xbox game is something like 320x480 pixels where as most people run Halo pc at 800x600 or 1024x768 pixels. Also I believe the Xbox only uses pixel shader 1.0 or 1.1?(geforce3) where as most new cards use Pixel shader 1.4 or 2.0 which adds better lighting effects.
