Subject: Completely Random theory with Little to No Evidence

[SMN.ACTUAL]
"The situation on the ground isn't my concern."
[DARE.V.500341 {S1)]: "I understand, Admiral. but I
need --"

Dare is speaking to an admiral when they're in the middle of a crisis. How does
she get this access? I bet Admiral's are normally busy when their planet is
about to asplode.
[DARE.V.5003
41
(S1)]: "Sir. I don't report to Fleet."
[DARE.V.500341 (S1)]: "And the men I want? Now they don't either."

This implies that Dare is outside the normal chain of command. As many people
have already guessed, this would imply that she is an ONI spook. Yet she also
has the jurisdiction to take men from an admiral regardless of what he wants?
Something's going on here.

She was asking the Admiral for niceties I believe. She wanted the men to hear
the order from their superiors, not through another branch. She also specially
requested these soldiers, including a Rookie. Why take a Rookie? Is he meant to
be a Meat Shield? i dun wanna pley az a meet sheeld!!!

She can make them switch branches just like that. She's obviously got to be high
in the chain of command to bypass an Admiral, right? But she's a ground soldier.
What's up with that?
Why would somebody with the authority to override an Admiral be on the ground in
combat in that day and age where communication technology was quite advanced?

Two totally wild options I'll suggest.

A. Dare is sided with the bad guys. She's a dirty, dirty traitor who picked a
weaker squad (we don't know any other squads, so this one could have a poor
record despite one or two guys living through numerous battles) so she had an
excuse to go in and take out the SI. Take out the SI would leave the city far
more crippled than it already was and it could also give the Covenant knowledge
of protocols stored inside (all AIs need protocols, despite being a second
generation dumb AI).

She may have changed their course in the drop because she tried to get
the other guys killed. HEVs are supposed to line up with their leader but
perhaps she made hers go where she needed but didn't care about the rest. So
while you're protecting the ONI building as Dutch (I believe- it was in the E3
video), you keep playing, get inside, see Dare doing something. She then kills
you. Ouch. What a...bi... er... not..nice...person...

B. Dare really is a good guy (er, girl) who picked this squad for its variety or talent. Perhaps another member is also an ONI spook undercover. Perhaps their Leader or a squad mate was testing them to see if they were up to it.

Assuming she's a good character now, she uses the Recon for its stealth to avoid conflict. She uses the other ODSTs as distractions for Covenant forces and is looking for something. Corrupted Data Core of the SI perhaps.

([COMM.DUTY.OFFICER]: ''Listen. We have a report of core data
corruption."
[COMM.DUTY.OFFICER]: ''I need you to upload your--"
[SUPERINTENDENT]: ''PARDON OUR DUST!''
[SUPERINTENDENT]: ''YOUR TAX DOLLARS AT WORK!''
[COMM.DUTY.OFFICER] ''--logs for the last twenty-four hours!''
)

In which case the Rookie really is a meat shield. Unlike the Chief who was a very important character, we could be the pawn in a game we only ever know a part of.
Conclusion? You're a meat shield. Deal with it.
:)

That's nice, dude. Playing as a pawn seems to be the most likely, right now.

I dun be meta sheild!!! DD=

Umm, all I can say aboout DARE is that she's an ONI Section 1 spook and that she'll probably be a bi....not nice girl whether she helps us or not.

  • 06.03.2009 10:13 AM PDT

Or maybe Dare is following orders from the higher-up ONI members. She is meant to head off course with the rest of the ODSTs to get something vitally important/classified, it being classified would be a reason the ODSTs didn't not know about her mission, from the ONI building which is eventually destroyed. Which we see through the Rookie's point early on being engulfed with flames. Suggesting the Cov. knew something important could have been held there or they just blew it up for the lolz. Giving a reason for her mission.

I reckon it will go down the whole " big responsibility" route, a la Star Wars, Star trek etc...

But yeah, I am a little suspicious of Dare, and that massive head doesn't exactly help

  • 06.03.2009 10:15 AM PDT

I noticed in the first cutscene where one ODST states that they are way off ocurse. Correct me if I'm wrong, but then I hear Dare say that she is going right where she wants to. Also, in that 30 minute demo presentation, Staten points out the flaming ONI building at night, but in the flashback it is un-harmed. Maybe that sends her crazy?

That made me 'lol'.
:)

SD: You're right, she will be a not nice person either way probably.

Humanity: I agree- the Covenant blew up the ONI based for the lulz.

Vivi: Both your first points are right. Sends her crazy though? Nah- she seemed perfectly sane from my point of view. Either way though- she's the one we've gotta find and slap for doing this without telling us, eh?

  • 06.03.2009 10:23 AM PDT

Well I hope Dare looks HOT, we need a new Cortana.

I think she is really leaning on the fact that she is ONI and presumably the Admiral knows what she is up to/tasked with. Oh and she does say "Please" to the Admiral so I think this is more of a professional/desperate "I'm going to be dead soon, fill your boots" courtesy more than anything, I think the Admiral could have refused her the men she needs for her mission.

  • 06.03.2009 10:30 AM PDT

Staten said the SI would be hot, don't worry :).

Flamedude: For one, it's a crime that you have senior in your title but I don't, haha.
Now then: Anything's possible. I know that. I still think that if he didn't though, he would have been overridden if this was so high of a priority.

In any event though, Rook is a meat shield.

I think it's more likely that the Rookie is also hiding a bit more than most people think. He has the second most classified data behind Dare, so it's possible that the Rookie's got something he's hiding, as well. Could he perhaps be a Spook along with Dare? I don't know, but I think our Rookie's got something more than people give him credit for.

Also, a few of us were talking during matchmaking and Halo: Reach is definitely going to be, not a first person shooter, not a third person shooter, but a second person shooter. Bungie is going to revolutionize the way you watch other people play games.

Nice summary, burrito. It definitely seems possible!

Waiting until Sept. 22nd to get my hands on this game is gonna be difficult...

If you recall from the trailer last year, the SI was locked out by ONI when it was trying to gather information the silent HEV pod. Further evidence to prove his link to ONI? They didn't want the SI knowing more than the basics, he is an ODST, help him.

  • 06.03.2009 11:38 AM PDT

I think she has direct orders to defend the ONI building, and The Rookie's squad is the best of the best (or the best that are available)

What if Dare is a Double Agent? She tells the Covenant she is a traitor, but really helps the UNSC? My brain hurts.

Snakie: I think the information is classified simple because Bungie doesn't want us knowing. They like going for that mysterious protagonist thing. Bungie said a while ago that'd we'd get to know these characters really well, but not as much as the Chief. I don't think Rook will have anything really hidden from us. Nah, he'll be straightforward I'd say.

Max: No, I didn't see that. Was that the teaser or what? Can you give me a link to the video and at the time it happened so I can see?

Circles within circles! At this point? Almost anything is possible.

Everybody keeps thinking I don't know how Bungie does things. I know, believe me. But sometimes what they do for the purpose of the game and for their whole "mystery" thing can also become an important portion of the plot. I'm just speculating.

I do not appreciate B.Net Group solicitation. If you ignore this and send me an invitation anyway, I will block communications with you.

I think you're misconstruing her request, as it was stated, as a command. I don't see it that way. After all, the Admiral did respond in a way that leads me to believe he was still granting her a squad, and only if he could survive to do so.

Admirals are pretty freaking high up there, and tend to be directly part of ONI personnel. I doubt she is more highly ranked than an Admiral. It seems more likely that she reports to directly to someone who may be, though.

As far as I know all the Spartan III's that were still alive at this time are on Onyx in the Dyson sphere.
