Without me, it's just "Aweso".
The Slipspace portal didn't have any error (which as far as we know is the only way time travel has occurred), it was just that the ship broke in two. Now for an analogy of why Chief didn't end up at Earth like the fore section of the ship:
Imagine that entering slipspace is like being shot from a giant slingshot into the air. If properly aligned, you will land precisely where you want, as long as you have taken into account the air currents (It has been mentioned that in slipspace, there are "current" which UNSC ships plow through, while Covenant ships glide along them for increased speed). Now, imagine that a piece of the projectile shot from the slingshot breaks off (the Chief's section of the ship). That piece will be on a different trajectory, and without a stable slipspace drive, it cannot plow through the currents, but instead, (depending on whether the slipspace engine is still being powered) will either be tossed off track by the currents, or the engines will drive it in a completely new direction with no nav center (located at the front of the ship) to guide it.
Another support for time travel is that people say that Guilty Spark has seen Master Chief before MC meets him.
That does not make much sense to me, as the Spark that had met John would still be in that timeline's future. S how would he know who he was? And what would happen to John when he returns? Future Chief does not appear in any Halo canon, so if the highly implausible time travel occurrence does actually occur, he would just be lost in space, and have no role to play in the story.
Here's an illustration for those too lazy to read:
