Time travel =/= Subplot.

Kick start a craze

Why time travel is implausible:

Because even though they did it in the books, it would make for a terrible plot in the game.

End argument.

Indeed, time travel = worst plot device ever.

No time travel was ever used in the novels.

Time Dilation =/= Time Travel

Doc: "i'm a pacifist"
Caboose: "your a thing that babies suck on?"
Tucker: "no dude, that's a pedephile"
Church: "tucker, i think he means a pacifier"

This is correct. While the passage of time is different and not well understood in slip space, it is in no way time travel. One thing that I have always respected about Bungie is that they have never got to fanciful or fantastic with the games and the novels follow suite. Though they are sci-fi, they are somewhat believable.

When did they use it in the books? I know that they warped time while in slipspace, which would either slow or speed up time outside of slipspace, but nothing about time travel ever appeared.

Yeah it's not time travel b/c at the end of Halo 3 the planet looks more for like a forerunner planet considering the fact that there is a forerunner symbol on the planet. It is more likely that he just traveled off course and ends up on a planet inhabited by some alines or something.

Time travel did occur in the book b/c Nicole-458 was sent back in time and is traped in the year 2004. She's in the game Dead or Alive 4. But i still don't believe it was time travel.

I'm suprised the time-travel theory got so out of hand that people actually had to make threads combatting them. Though I suppose this situation is somewhat a microcosm of the world we live in - someone makes an idiotic idea and everybody follows. Its a sad state if affairs...

Nevertheless, nice thread, well pointed out. I doubt this will stop these stupid threads, but at least its a bastion of common sense we can hide in if the idiots flood the forum.

Nicole's journey is not canon.

I'm afraid thats got about as much canon as a... well, time-travel theory I suppose.

It was nothing but a gimic to draw halo fans into DOA with a basic storyline applied to it. However, it is not canon, so forget about it.

This is essentially it.

Phoenix is dead, long live Phoenix!
Is it?

Then what is with all the Forerunner Crystals time anomalies in the books.?I know it only reduced time in slip-space, never did what some are saying that it did, but I wouldn't rule out the point that the Forerunners couldn't have time-travel. It is a technical possibility.

But if they do it in the game, I'm not buying it. The reason I'm hyped for Reach is because it isn't a continuation of Halo 3.

  • 06.08.2009 8:41 PM PDT

Were it so easy.

Though certainly an interesting theory, I agree, its false. If MC DID go back in time, wouldn't he meet up with his own self in the past? That would make for quite a goofy storyline if it were the case.

Time travel is only visually possible. Events can be seen because we see the light that reflects off of them. If faster than light travel is ever possible, then theoretically you could move away from an event faster than the reflecting light, and see that light again, therefore witnessing the event twice. you cannot, however, move "backwards" and be there to have an impact on the event.

Time travel can make a lot of sense though. I really don't think that he went back in time.

The thing is that if Sam is in this game then he wouldn't be in it very long, but if the future MC knows that Sam was going to die then he would be able to save him and Sam would be with the younger MC and his squad longer.

I'm not saying that I think it is time travel, I'm just saying that if Bungie did mean it to be time travel then it would be interesting to see how it played out in the story.

Known by some, but not by all.
Soffish: Do not eat!
TWP Assistant Director.

Ok so the MC travels back in time...back to Reach...he get's to the planet surface...and finds no other than????

Himself?

There is no time travel...the ending of Halo 3 isn't Reach....Read the freakin books and stop with this dribble...if you don't then you might as well go play with explosives and high voltage electricity in the middle of traffic...
