I've done character modeling for video games before. Raising the waistline slightly creates longer legs and shorter torso which gives a uniquely feminine appearance. Broadening the hips and narrowing the waist a very small ammount further accentuates this effect. These changes modify the appearance of the model without changing the height or basic size of the model and none of it impacts gameplay.

They would have to create a completely new animation set then, and considering the multiplayer is directly tied into Halo 3, this isn't possible.

I agree with Cyber.

If you look at the Chief does he look like a woman? No, because his body is built like a man's, an exceptionally large man given. Women are built like women, their shape is one of an hour glass, whilst men have a man shaped body. Armor may obscure some things but gender would still be easy to identify. Example: Dare.

But Dare is an ODST, not a Spartan

I wouldn't mind them making it but it really shouldn't look different other than the legs. Other than that the suits would look the same.

Well I guess I better put some pants on.

I feel like I'm gonna break this thing!

Well the matchmaking will be different to Halo 3's matchmaking, lets just hope that we've played mr spartan enough and we'll be something else.

Yes, but do you see how her shoulders aren't as wide as the other male ODSTs? Do you see how the shape of her body is different from her male counterparts?

No they wouldn't.

The animations are applied to an invisible "skeleton" inside the wireframe of the model. If you modify a skeleton and move the joints slightly, in order to accomodate longer legs for example, the animation ends up looking identical.

As long as the joints are positioned correctly within the model you don't have to make any animation changes. I told you, I've done this before.

The argument is absolutely valid; there is a single armour type in the story: MJOLNIR. It's made for both genders.

And no, there is no disparity in the appearance of male and female spartans. Why? Because they're wearing the same armour type, and they're all more or less the same height.

It's even commonly stated in the books and other mediums that Spartans are known to be notoriously near-impossible to identify from eachother, male or female. Female spartans look exactly like male spartans, and vice versa.

  • 06.03.2009 2:25 PM PDT

or we could just say no. the arguement is kindof pointless because for one it will never happen. also the stuff the spartans did all made them look like rhino men. either male or female. that female spartan can lift the same as john.

see above post he knows what hes talking about the dentity of spartans. true to cannon. no they dont need waist reductions or shorter shoulders. because they LOOK LIKE MEN

Just a suggestion. Rather than make a female armor set just change the stance of the Spartan. I agree that the armor is unisex. Just change the way they stand or move. Personally I think the voice selection in H3 was awesome...you don't need to look like a chick. And honestly, what Spartan chick would want to look girly anyway? C'mon guys these a soldier girls...they would to look badass. Not sexy/badass. The player may want them to look sexy but for the stories sake....no sexy Spartans allowed. BADASSERY OR GTFO!

Obviously the spartans look very different under their armour. They have skin, hair, eyes, mouths, bones, blood, and everything beneath the armour.

But you need to understand this clearly; MJOLNIR armour is super-armour in most senses of the term. It's thick, and it's big. If the Spartans are an inch or two seperated in height, the armour kinda evens it out. It's that thick.

When I read that graphic novel with Maria in it, I had no idea that the spartan was female. All they had to do to keep the illusion was not indicate her name or reference her gender. They didn't hide anything at odd angles at all; she looked like a Spartan. Spartans, male or female, look the same.

Ehh, there are both pro's and con to this.

Pro's-More diversity in the game.

Con's- Female Spartans would be harder to hit because they would be a smaller target.

regardless of spartan armor being uni-sex, this is a good idea, it doesn't need to be much, just subtle differences in proportion. Just something to differentiate between them if they are standing side by side, shouldn't be anything too obvious so there's no issues like with the elites. It probably would just be guys anyway, like how little kids set the voice to female, see below

Worst case scenarios and hardly the overwhelming usage you'll encounter in matchmaking.

In fact, when dealing with young men you'll find that most of them would be freaked out by the idea of appearing to be female.

it is armour. armour on modern day marines does not fit to "curve" for women. It isnt meant to be sexy, make the enemy get wood, or distract them in any way. it is made to protect the user. UNISEX

Plus it has been stated in at least 2 books that the armour is exactly the same for all spartans. They each were around 7 ft 2 and had the same width. hence the selection process to become a SPARTAN II.

so in conclusion it would be a bad idea and against cannon

Actually each Spartan has his/her own suit to fit them. Samuel was a head taller than the other Spartans. How would he fit into a suit that was the same size for everyone genius?

I don't think female suits would work because they'd be smaller, thus giving others a smaller target and making it unfair.

Oh riiight! So we should get rid of the armour when they switch to female! Otherwise, that arguement is invalid.

If the female model is smaller than the male model, then the amount of "females" playing Halo would increase by a few hundred percent.

Look, it has been stated in the books that once in armour, Spartans all look the same. Have a look at the cover of the Ghosts of Onyx. There are 2 Spartans on the cover. One of them is Kelly, a female.

Can you tell me which one is Kelly?

I say first "Would female armor be pracitcal in battle?"

If the answer is yes, then put it in.
If the answer is no, then no.

This alone is the only help I need to make my choice: NO. We don't want anything further away from the book's good ol' canon than what we already have going against us. I don't want to see female Spartan armor because that's not the way things are supposed to be.

Female Spartans... are not short

They're probably equals in strength to the male Spartans. Natural strength gets thrown pretty much out the window when you both received the same augmentations and are both wearing the same strength-enhancing armour.

The armour is unisex, there isn't male or female armour, get over it.

BLARG, got carried away there...
