Glory to Jesus Christ

When Bungie released their announcement trailer for Halo 3: ODST, oh so long ago, it featured the Rookie exiting his SOEIV into a drenching downpour of rain. Now the rain set up a gloomy, dark atmosphere about the trailer and game, which I think was pretty epic. Personally, I think that rain is one of the best ways to set the mood in stories, books, games, etc.

But at Bungie's 2009 E3 announcement and gameplay showing, the rain was pretty much gone besides an incredibly light drizzle which is barely noticeable. Bungie seems to have traded out the stormy setting for more of an apocalyptic, red and fiery kind of mood. This new mood is just fine with me, don't get me wrong, and I like it, but the stormy, rainy, downpour mood also just seems to be too good to throw away.

Bungie obviously sees this because they have, to some extent, kept the rainy mood. In the new and improved Halo 3: ODST trailer, you can see the downpour at 0:17, 0:22, 0:30, 0:59, 1:12, 1:24, 1:27, 1:29, 1:33, 1:36, and 1:42. The ODST box still features the rain on it as well.

Hopefully these are all signs that at least a part of the game will have the pouring rain, maybe after you complete each beacon the rain gets steadily heavier. Maybe I'm just being hopeful and fooling myself. I'll miss the rain if it isn't there, but it won't stop ODST from being a kick ass game.

Your thoughts?

?

While rain would make for an awesome environmental affect, as you said, it wouldn't matter if it was gone, the game would still rock. But don't count it out yet! We've only seen a very minuscule portion of the game.

The Flood Revolution is coming...

Trailer does not have to equal gameplay. (See EA Sports)

If you didn't realize, you also don't start the game on the ground.

Everyone's a pacifist between wars. It's like being a vegetarian between meals.

There's a thunderstorm going on above my house right now... screw the rain XD

My problems [with Reach] are basically just full parties, mlg, and people who go out of their way not to get killed.

Bungie said no to rain. And it was so.

Y'know, it could start raining eventually. Doesn't have to do it from start to finish.

oO( Underdogg13 )Oo

Rain is weather, so it could alternate in the actual game.

  • 06.03.2009 4:03 PM PDT

The original trailer might be much before the gameplay seen. Heavy rain usually doesn't last very long.

Exactly, I'm really hoping it will make at least a small appearance, and it won't in any way hinder my fun if it is absent. It would just be a cool feature if it was there.

Ah sir, indeed. While the trailer does not need to reflect the actual game, I'm just saying that the effect the rain made in the trailer would be awesome in the game as well and that I would like to see it at least in some small part.

I know the game does not start on the ground, but a vast majority of it s on the ground. I also fail to see how that is relevant.

Yes, yes I do. It creates great mood and environmental effects. Environment can really change a game, would the beginning of 343 Guilty Spark have been as scary if it was sunny and butterflies and bunnies were frolicking about?

Thank you sir, that was an epic rendition of this topic.

and how!

Perhaps it will be raining during one of the flashbacks instead.

Either way, I can't WAIT for this game. Everything about it looks perfect...except for ODST's holding detached turrets...

I agree, it would be nice to see. It's relevant, it shows how things can be completely different from a trailer. First trailer, you crash to the ground and get out of the pod later. We've seen that the game starts and you take damage from a fall.

Point is, things change.

I am going to lube your butt hole with nacho cheese and -blam!- you with a crowbar.

Long as I remember the rain been comin down.
Clouds of mystry pourin confusion on the ground.
Good men through the ages, tryin to find the sun;
And I wonder, still I wonder, wholl stop the rain.

Jesus loves you, but everyone else thinks you're a twat.

chances are they thought it just made it to hard to see at night, that or it killed the frame rate to much

That is a possibility but it seems to me to be unlikely. Joe Staten has said that all of the flashbacks take place during the day, and while it can rain during the day I think that in all he flashbacks the sun will be out and that is what he meant by day. Also, the announcement trailer showed the rain starting only after dark, during the night.

"When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade. Make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don't want your damn lemons! What am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life's manager! Make life rue the day it thought it could give EL1TE SUPR3MACY lemons! Do you know who I am? I'm the man who's gonna burn your house down! With the lemons! I'm gonna get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!"

Just goes to show that you can never trust the Weather Channel.

The VISR would eliminate the visibility problem, but I see your point with the frame rate. Hopefully it would be possible (or plausible) with modern technology.

Shhh, don't tell Sage!
Holy freedom fries!

Hopefully, they implement the "Day and night" Feature.
But with "sun and rain" type of weather.
Constantly changing.
Y'know?

That would be cool, but I don't think it is likely. The impression I've been getting is that the events of ODST are all supposed to occur in one night, meaning there wouldn't be much room for the sun to be able to cycle. The Decemebr 08 Game Informer magazine article on ODST implies that six hours after the Rookie awakes the game ends.

  • 06.03.2009 4:23 PM PDT

We've only seen a partial segment of the game.
Who's to say it won't rain?

" Truth? You will Never know Truth!"

"My tears cannot cover the blood that has been spill."

"I lead my troops into battle. With strong morale and man power, we will overcome the invaders!"

The rain adds the epicness and mood to the story (Heavy rain though), I love rain.
I agree with you 100%. I imagine it right now Lol.
