When Bungie released their announcement trailer for Halo 3: ODST, oh so long ago, it featured the Rookie exiting his SOEIV into a drenching downpour of rain. Now the rain set up a gloomy, dark atmosphere about the trailer and game, which I think was pretty epic. Personally, I think that rain is one of the best ways to set the mood in stories, books, games, etc.
But at Bungie's 2009 E3 announcement and gameplay showing, the rain was pretty much gone besides an incredibly light drizzle which is barely noticeable. Bungie seems to have traded out the stormy setting for more of an apocalyptic, red and fiery kind of mood. This new mood is just fine with me, don't get me wrong, and I like it, but the stormy, rainy, downpour mood also just seems to be too good to throw away.
Bungie obviously sees this because they have, to some extent, kept the rainy mood. In the new and improved Halo 3: ODST trailer, you can see the downpour at 0:17, 0:22, 0:30, 0:59, 1:12, 1:24, 1:27, 1:29, 1:33, 1:36, and 1:42. The ODST box still features the rain on it as well.
Hopefully these are all signs that at least a part of the game will have the pouring rain, maybe after you complete each beacon the rain gets steadily heavier. Maybe I'm just being hopeful and fooling myself. I'll miss the rain if it isn't there, but it won't stop ODST from being a kick ass game.
