Not counting a year of training, possibly more, and actual combat experiance. He may not have primarily entered into the ODST units. He may have initially been a marine

May the Forge be with you.

He's called "The Rookie" because he's the youngest squad member.

the reason why they call him rookie is This Marine was recently transferred from the 26th MEF, part of a Rapid Offensive Picket that suffered near-annihilation at New Jerusalem, Cygnus. Like most ODSTs, his actions speak louder than words.

he was enlisted before but was recently transferred to odst

Right, and the ODST program I'm sure that it takes more training then he might need for just being in the UNSC Marine Corps. So he might have needed to go though so basic ODST training, so to the ODSTs he's new and doesn't have much if any experience with them.

Thats me, vile and obsene

Differant planets have diff times than others

some people could metaphoricly live twice as long as others depending on the size of the planet and distance from sun

earth years are diff from mars years

harvest was alot smaller than earth meaning that people would live like 200 harvest years

The dude probably made E-3 in his first two years in. Which means, he's spent the last three years as a lance corporal (about double the time most will spend at this rank). A good number of folks, who serve in the corps for the standard term of 4 years, will never make corporal.

There are a number of fields (jobs) in the Corps where the only way to earn NCO is to go up against a division level meritorious board.

Maybe he got busted down.

Remember if he enlisted in 47 than he had to go through basic training, ODST training, and be promoted to Private, and so forth.

$.50 in store credit.

His rank may have been put reduced when he switched from being a normal marine to an ODST.

When you join the ODSTs, you start a new rank chain.

In modern day when they join the Spec Ops (AKA SAS Spetznaz) theyre rank get's busted down to 0.

As long as you stay within the same branch of service your rank will not change. ODST are a cross between the Army's elite jumpers and the Marine Corps Force Recon. However, in the case of the world Bungie created, ODST are 100% Marines.

I can't confirm this.

I will say, again, that Marines who transfer from regular Marines to Recon do not lose rank. Same can be said for those Navy personnel who transfer from the regular Navy to Navy Seals as well as those who transfer from regular Army to Army Delta Force.

Excellent point but they usually don't let 4 year lance corporal's reenlist.........

After 4 you really should be an e-4 at least.... unless your just skating along sandbagging everyone else's coatails

This is true.... you do not get busted down in rank just because you transfer to another group within the same service.

Even if you change between services they usually let you keep your rank to one extent or another.

LoL. Bungie needs to go back and do some research.... If the "Rookie" enlisted in 47 and the events at New Mombasa took place in 52.... thats a loooongg time to be a lance corporal.

I know we're talking about space Marines here but everything from E-1 to E-3 is an automatic promotion based on time in grade and time in service. Merit/fitness reports don't come into play until you get ready to become an NCO.

The only explanation I can think of for a 5 year lance would be someone who got busted down in rank.
He enlisted to be a marine and then became a ODST therefore restarting his rank.

Thats a possibility, as well as the fact he may have spent a significant amount of time in cryosleep

Recon units won't accept or keep people who have serious disiplinary issues.
Maybe this squad is like the Dirty Dozen... dude that would be awesome!

Remember though, Johnson was a Staff Sergeant in 2525, and a Sergeant Major in 2552. And Jenkins was still a Private in 2552, and he fought since 2525(assuming, of course, there the same Jenkins from Contact Harvest and The Flood).

I'm in the boat that maybe ODST has a different rank structure, although I would like to see some justification. If I recall correctly, my pops was E-6 in around the same time.

He could get promoted by doing stuff that are helpful for the army, or even surviving something hard to survive.

If this were the case, why would he be called "The Rookie"?

During the Human-Covenant war the UNSC usually let "slip" a lot of issues with people just to keep them in the fight, they needed every last soldier they could get. An engineer for a ship (name escapes me, I think he served under Cpt. Keyes) was well passed the retirement age, but it was just let slide because they needed him.

Also; ODSTs where notorious for being 'crazy', I wouldn't be surprised if most action that would normally have a regular Marine kicked out of the military would be let slide for them because of what their job requires. This 'disregard' for the rank stuff could be seen in Locklear in First Strike.
