When they are on the dropship prepping for the mission where they all get a separate piece of the map, CPO Mendez asks Kelly to distribute the map-- the book says she hands it out to 75 Spartans. On the very next page when John and Sam round up the kids, it ends up there are only 70 of them counting John, Sam, and Kelly.... Wonder if those five missing play into this plot.

I blame stosh.

Proud tester of the Halo 3 beta.

Now that you mention it, I remember that too!
Maybe they'll play a role in Halo: Reach? I guess we'll just have to wait and see...
Good theory though, it might be.

Two team's? cause Grey team was around that time after they tried to run away. so 6-3=3(omg math) So two teams maybe? But one thing that disproves this is there are five spartans in the picture. missing spartan??? Omg master chiefs secret older brother maybe (lol jk)

When I grow up, I want to be just like goofenhour.

I remember them still counting 75 kids in the SPARTAN Project after that mission. They may not of been acknowledged of the plan to meet at the lake. But I'm pretty the Chief wouldn't allow those kids to be lost forever.

Even if so, they said that last person would have to walk home so they had to have at least some knowledge of where they were.

But they were very vague on the other kids, they didn't really say anything about them. But it is possible if they were lost. I doubt it though.

The missing six do reappear for augmenting though or some other meeting. It was announced an error I believe. All I know is that if we don't play as Fred or another surviving spartan then the character we play as dies.

They could have, but it was odd that the numbers switched like that. From 75 down to 69 and then back up if it did. You would expect someone editing that to catch something that sticks out like that.

Yeah it's a great book, if that was announced as an error then I never knew about that. Just found it a very interesting little bit of information I thought I would share. I had not seen another thread about anything like this.

Just forget about me saying it was an error. Just like you said it would be odd for it to go from 77 and then to 69. If it was a mistake youd think that it would say 75 or something not 69. I think it would be better to play as Fred anyway because he doesn't die.

John told them to stop playing near the opening of the pelican bay, but NOOO...

Gosh!

It's cool. I actually looked for any retractions about the book or errors found but nothing was mentioned so I decided to post a threat and thought it might be worthwhile. Hopefully it gets people reading FoR more and spurs more thinking.

^^ Lol. John gave them a swift kick out of the hatch.

But another thing to consider is they disappeared pre-augmentation. So no augmenation = no cyborg, no cyborg = no MJOLNIR. So a very big IF they come into play, wonder how the gamewill get around that.

Im still sticking to the "They fell out of the hatch" theory.

I dont think they will come into play.

they may not and if not that's cool. Just a thing I found because Bungie only screws up (we think) when they mean to let something go. So we will see.

Also why is my Bruce? What? one of the top forum topics? it got locked yesterday.

Oh wow, I counted wrong because counting Kelly, Sam and John. That means 5 are missing... lookout

  • 06.03.2009 10:31 PM PDT

Yeah, those missing trainees? Typo.
Unfortunately, the Halo books are rife with them. Towards the end of FoR, when John and Blue Team go to destroy the navigational data, "Kelly" is talking in the back of the Pelican, and then all of a sudden it's back to "Linda". It's unfortunate, but the editor apparently missed some details. In any case, I'm fairly confident that either all of the trainees made it off of that Pelican, or that the missing number had inexplicably died "off-screen".

Perhaps the other six were acting as guards or scouts. What was the exact wording of the situation?

I hate you so much...

But not as much as I hate the internet.

It does say that some of the pieces of the map didn't belong. That could have been an accidental inference, by the editor. Plus, i think John would know how many people are in his squad. I'm inclined to agree with kudubs..

But great find OP. We'll see how it plays out in '10, eh?
