ODST's arrive in the city just after In Amber Clad (chief on board) jumps alongside the carrier.) It takes all the time for Chief to kill Regret before Truth has a reason to replace the elites. I'll give that about a week (taking into account that covenant have fast slipspace jumps) So if we drop six hours later, should we actually be encountering brutes in a leadership position. Shouldn't the brutes and elites at least be fighting each other? I know there won't be elites, but according to the time line, shouldn't there be?

If you read the books , (and pieced things together,) you would know that elites and brutes are long time rivals ,and that theywere fighting before regret told them to. The elites left earth with regret got their own ship and went back to fighting brutes in space next to delta halo.

I have, but the elites have more than one ship.

NO GROUP INVITES!!!

Here is the explanation why no Elites in ODST:
http://www.bungie.net/News/content.aspx?cid=16989

And here is my explantion.. or speculation. Whatever.

Oh and how come there are Brutes but no Elites on Earth during ODST?
Let's think Regret's Fleet. 2 Assault Carriers and 15 CCS-Battlecruisers.
One Assault Carrier was destroyed, and one jumped away, with most, if not all Elite(Sangheili) forces. The rest of the Elites still on ground are killed by humans, who had considerable numbers compared to the Covenant forces.
Truth hears that Regret fled so he orders the rest of CCS cruisers attack. Or those which are still left and have BRUTE CREWS. That Regret's Fleet contains Brutes too is only explanation how Brutes are attacking Earth, Mombasa only two hours after Regret left. The Covenant has fast slipspace drives but even they cannot send massive attack force that quick probably, unless Truth had other ships on route while Regret was attacking Earth.
So anyways, Truth's Brutes land on Earth within 2 hours from initial Covenant attack. And they continue gaining reinforcements.... and the fighting on Earth lasts for weeks... until the Ark Portal is uncovered and the Covenant retreats.

Have to add that BUNGIE never explained how the Brutes got to Earth so fast after Elites had left or killed. I think my explanation explains that..

Self-proclaimed genius.
Roam the streets with a sign, "will love for false hope."

Read the frontpage news more. Bungie gave us a perfectly good explanation as to why the Brutes occupy New Mombasa a long time ago.

Even the Halo Wars timeline mentions that Brutes were given high honors for their dedication to human slaughter at Harvest. Since then, they've been very much favored over the Elites and tasked with special missions along with crappy ones such as patrolling a dead city. It wasn't until Regret died that the main command hierarchy of the Elites was replaced with Brutes.

Ok even if there are no elites in ODST, I have another time line irregularity.
Why would we get to play as SGT Johnson in firefight? He was with Master Chief and left Earth. So why is he in Firefight?

Just a thought.

The only thing nescecary for the triumph of evil, is for good men to do nothing. - Edmund Burke

RAWR!

its simple really. think about it like this.
truth was planning to betray the elites for a long time, maybe even when the first halo was destroyed. so he wouldnt want any elites on earth because the elites could join up with the humans and defend earth. see simple. why would he want elites in the direction he is going to go?

Here’s what Luke had to say about the differences in treatment between the Spartans and Elites in Reach:

“Instead of piece-by-piece customization like the Spartans, Elite customization is a full model swap with models selected from the various Elite classes appearing throughout the Campaign. There are all kinds of reasons for this, not the least of which is our continued emphasis on the Spartan as your identity in Reach.”

Yes. The enemies in this game should be elites, without a ton of whirlygigification to explain why only brutes are left.
But if you need a reason, Regret took all the Elites with him.

Why is it that the brutes are wearing the new armor?

Firefight mode isn't official cannon. It's a multiplayer mode, just like the other multiplayer modes. Halo 3's multiplayer has Spartans and Elites in red and blue armor at a civil war and we all know THAT isn't a part of the Halo story.

Man is born free but everywhere he is in chains.

And to explain the Brutes: Bungie programmed Brute enemy AI into Halo 3, so since ODST runs on the same engine as Halo 3 there is not really any Elite enemy AI... just like in Halo 3.

its not really NEW armor its just when you met them in halo 2 they didn't have it on they had it on in harvest (halo wars) it is just their attack armor

They were always Brutes - They were wearing Elite masks.

Truth would have been replacing Elites with Brute fleets long before the events on High Charity. Truth always new that the Brutes would follow blindly while the Elites were more likely to go against them if they learned the truth behind the war against the humans.

It's no surprise that Truth would mobilize Brutes once Regrets ship discovered a large Human colony.

But why Brutes?

In the wake of Regret's shameful retreat from New Mombasa, the Prophet of Truth continued his maneuvering - one eye always on his ultimate goal: his rightful and holy ascension. For Truth, his own personal passage was paramount. His Godhood would not be denied. Everything else was secondary.

And though Truth's duplicitous scheming doesn't come to full fruition until the Elite Honor Guard's failure to protect the Prophet of Regret affords him with the final leverage needed to appoint the Brutes to the lofty position, his plans were never made in haste. They were well laid. When the time came to return his attention to Earth, his expendable regiments needed to be led by Jiralhanae, not Sangheili.

Leaving the Elites to scour Earth in search of a Holy Forerunner relic, and ultimately to uncover the most precious and sacrosanct Forerunner artifact in existence - the very portal that opened upon the Ark itself - would have placed all Truth's aspirations upon the shoulders of a species he had already decided to cast aside, a species splintered by heresy and derision, even amongst their own ranks.

Truth's divisive mandate had been set in motion. The Elites had exhausted their usefulness to him, they would not be allowed to meddle in his affairs any longer, and he would not place his rightful transcendence into the hands of incompetents. His word was law.

So the Prophet of Truth deploys Brutes. And the Brutes were eager to prove that their loyalty and battle prowess had earned them a seat at the side of the Hierarchs, as the honored protectors of the sacred Covenant. Such blind faith and eagerness marked them as near perfect pawns for Truth to sacrifice.
