Left 4 Dead had friendly fire.
It also had matchmaking.
I see no problems with what happened there. And the excuse they gave on kotaku (aside from it being a rewrite of code) is completely invalid. I would enjoy playing with strangers because you can't always get 4 friends together to play. Firefight should be playable whenever you want, not something you have to work to put together. Yeah, you'd like to play with your friends, but you'd LOVE to be able to PLAY in the first place.
And even then, the rewriting of code isn't even a good excuse. If you're a decent company who listens to your community, you'll do what you can to help instead of brushing it off as "Go make friends on our forums!"
I payed for your game. Do the majority of us a favor (1,000 people thus far) and help us out, instead of brushing us off.
[Edit]
And to everybody saying Matchmaking only brings "n00bs," you don't HAVE to use Matchmaking. You CAN play with just friends.
There's really no reason to NOT use matchmaking. It helps the community connect with others, helps people find games faster, helps people not have to play Firefight by themselves, etc.
