Subject: Only 2 Players per Xbox for Firefight?

Each game of Firefight begins in a familiar lobby. This is where the party leader and up to three of his friends set everything up. You can see that outside of some visual treatments, nothing's been removed from Halo 3's campaign feature set. You can still mix and match players over System Link and Xbox LIVE, and of course, if you don't have four Xbox 360s and televisions at your disposal, two-player splitscreen is still in full effect.

I don't expect much of an official response, but why is it only possible to have 2 Players per Xbox for Firefight when the Halo platform has room for 4?

Is it because Firefight is classified as a campaign co-op (campaign levels run on a higher FPS than MP so I hear)? Or is this a money thing where to get the most out of Firefight we need a buddy somewhere who's also shelled out for a 360 and ODST?

Because it's really freakin' annoying if you just want to lan the damn thing with 4 people, having to lug your 360 over to a mate's place as well as your 32" screen or what have you. -__-;

The ability to have 4 players on the one screen would be much appreciated.

I'm too a bit disappointed. It never made much sense to me that it's impossible to have 4 players on campaign on same console but it's possible in Forge, Custom Games, MM and Theater when a film is about campaign (at least i think so, when on same console).

This is especially stupid with Firefight, especially when the game's going to lack "search for players" feature anyway (i made that up then, there's never been even a mention to such feature)
So i'm going to have go through forums and all to find 2 people (can play with my bro at least) who yell, scream, swear or something and whether i can trust them to come to play when agreed is doubtful.

Actual reason why campaign can't be played with 4 people isn't higher FPS (only feasible ones are 30 and 60, AFAIK, and that's damn big gap) but one console gets too much load if 4 players. Think, AI, multiple enemies, large play areas, a lot of vehicles and other stuff.
Firefight has AI and multiple enemies but does that really stop 4 player split screen?

Sounds like a bunch of Justin Bieber wannabes in here. I bet you all wear skinny jeans too.

It's just been that way for co-op. And since technically Firefight is Co-Op, it's going to be like that too.

Go back and play Halo 2's Co-Op. 2 players max.
Halo 3's? 2 players max.
I don't see why ODST's is any different.

The way I look at it, Firefight is more an expansion of ODST's campaign than an addition to HALO 3's multiplayer. That way it makes sense that it's 2 player co op.

  • 06.05.2009 1:09 AM PDT

The difference though is that you can concievably get through co-op with 2 players.

With Firefight Bungie have stated that playing with less than a full complement of players is going to be like trying to play the game with one hand tied behind your back. So to get the most out of it you have to get a full team... which brings us back to the pain in the arse issue at lans.

True LAN parties have more than one Xbox and TV's connected to a single network. In other words, two Xbox's and two TV's = 4 player LAN co-op.

However, if you mean just a offline game on one Xbox then it would suck, but you can get over it.

Or looking for random people from Live/internet.
Especially if the only friend who has 360 and he doesn't like Halo... and you don't like having random people in the friend list.

2 player co-op in campaign or firefight wouldn't be that much problem, IF THERE WAS AN EASY WAY TO FIND MORE PEOPLE. Halo 3 lacked any sort custom game finder. It lacked a feature for finding more campaign players.
Somehow i think Bungie's going to fail to fix this. Usually Bungie has fixed problems from earlier Halo games (lack of enemy snipers and then their superhuman accuracy for example)
but this? Sigh...

IMO it's not problem so much that split screen max is 2 players... finding others is problem.

LANS are worth the bother, in my opinion, and I'm sorry you see it as an annoyance. It is the best way to play halo, or any game for that matter. Always has been always will be.

LANS maybe fun... but you must remember not every one can do those. Moving a HDTV is not possible really o.O, at least on regular basis.
Not many have small TVs anymore... or do people?

BTW, can one use a computer screen for playing? For 360 that is.

Jesus loves you, but everyone else thinks you're a twat.

the reason for the 2 player/xbox limit is because the campaign setting is a lot more taxing on the xbox.
as you would noticed when doing split screen in halo 3 the graphics do not look as great (objects not drawing as far away, no blood or other decals, 2d water, ect) 4 player split screen can be done in normal multilayer because its all set in one small level and the known amount of recourses is easier to work out.
The problem with firefight is that you will often have more than the normal 16 units (as in normal MP), and also when you have different characters on screen you have to load them all onto the xboxs RAM...
to get to the point to many sacrifices would have to be made to firefight for it to be able to work in 4player split screens

I see your point, but I've kept a smaller tv myself just in case these situations pop up, and I can't see finding one for cheap being a problem. If you have a tv that expensive, I don't think buying a decent sized but light unit should be an issue. Doesn't have to be high def, unless you are a stickler for that sort of thing.

Also I think it is possible to get an hdmi cable to use for some computer monitors, isn't it? and yes, I know the cable costs 50$ but I also know it is possible to get around that.

But yea. I was simply saying LANs are the best way to play games, in my opinion.

To each their own though.

i recon that ODST should have 4-player firefight on the same console!!! i like any kind of co-op game and the more people the better. i just get pissed off at handing over the controller when i die or when some one else wants a turn at playing. My brother, cousin and i play horde in Gears Of War 2 a lot when my cus comes over, but its always 2 at a time, never all 3. im just saying if we all could kill bots on one console in the same game rather than killing each other, it'll be more fun.

yeah if your computer monitor has a HDMI input then you can connect it to your 360 (pro/elite no older than about a year i think), also if your monitor has built in speakers HDMI also supports audio so you dont have to worry about any other cables

As long as the monitor has a VGA cable your set to go. Pick up a Xbox 360 VGA adapter in a electronic store (Most likely Best Buy.)

However, your also going to need a female to female adapter for the sound. It comes with a composite to phono adapter, but there isn't much you can do from there. That's where the female to female adapter comes in. Plug that thing into the phono plug, and plug your computer speakers in that bad boy and your good to go.

you said recon which peaked my interest

and yes i do agree, that a four split screen for firefight would be good for when my
too-cheap-to-get-live friends come over for a project or something
