With B.B. gone, the passion of Bungie.net has lessened.

You are correct in a load of different aspects, however, remember how they said that they glassed half of reach, yet left the other half un-touched because of the crystal. That's basically how you see it on the trailer.
While this is true; in the trailer you see half of the planet appear to be ok, and the other half is rather nasty-looking what with the nukes and all, I'm not convinced that half is glassed while the other half is not.
Aside from manipulating what's in the story for dramatic effect on Bungie's part for the trailer, there are a few things that can explain the difference in what we see. This is me just throwing out explanations and alternatives here, but it's quite possible that we see more of the damage on the darkside of the planet because it's the darkside (explosions and city lights aren't likely to be seen on the dayside). It's also probable that the main cities and key areas are on the darkside during the trailer, and we're just seeing particular explosions of that night.
Also, if memory serves me (which it may not), I think in First Strike & The Fall of Reach, the Covenant had been described as starting to glass at the polar regions, and working their way north and south from there, leaving certain latitudes relatively untouched. This effect would create a "band" of more-healthy looking landmasses, rather than an entire hemisphere.
I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you here, but simply offering possible alternatives.
And you might also be right about not following Fred's squad. As I recall he was the squad leader, and Kelly did recon because of her speed and agility.
The reason this might be true is that Bungie usually creates something new (I know William C. Dietz did the flood AFTER Halo 1) - or in this case following the other squad with... Anton, possible 259 as mentioned above. Their struggle of survival was not mentioned in the books, in which case you have some Bungie quality writing in your hands (Please write this one, Nylund)
To be honest, I feel that if we were ever going to see the other in-the-books main Spartan characters in the games, we would have already. My guess is that Bungie is keeping the books as a sort of "partial" canon, so that the majority of the gamers don't need to read the novels in order to have the characters fully characterized. Thus, I believe Bungie is giving us new, previously unnamed spartans (259 and 320 to name at least two), and the games will remain true cannon, and have minor tie-ins with the novels so that those who read the novels can appreciate the games' depth even more.
