Subject: Story behind Halo: Reach (Spoilers?)

LOOK OUT FOR THE ROFL FRAMES OF DOOM!

As I can see a lot of people think that it's Halo 4. A lot of people think Master Chief is there too.
Well, if you had read the novels (First strike and end of Fall of Reach) you'd know that you probably will step into the shoes of Fred, a spartan when reach was attacked, directly before Halo 1 starts. 2552. John is the only spartan to escape Reach on the pillar of awesome (see what I did there? Eh...) and the rest of the the spartan teams are left on the half-glassed reach, struggling for survival. Since the book First Strike went into Fred's POV you'll most likely play as him.
Reach is by the way a military planet that the Spartans trained on before they got mojnir armor.
Read the books. Seriously! They are great! Anyway, I'm really psyched about this game, especially since I've read the books.

That is a good point. Maybe thats it.

  • 06.05.2009 6:33 AM PDT

I'm Chris Myers. Indeed you have been indeeded!

I see what you did there o.O

I do agree. The books are awesome although I've yet to read(I do own it though) The cole protocol. So maybe your on to something. I never really figured Master Chief would be there, unless of course they let you play as him for the beginning. Because if you remember, he did go out onto the space docks. Right?

Yes, yes he did. We might see him in the start, since he was talking to the teams. I mean, he's Master Chief in rank, squad leader.

Who knows, maybe we'll see him at the end too, when returning to reach.

It's still completely possible that you will play as MC on the NavChip op, when he destroys the Nav data in the Circumference

I highly doubt it due to the fact that that was a 1 hour battle... around 7 pages in the book. The Spartans were stranded on Reach for a week.
Heck, playing as Master Chief could be the prologue or something. Not even a full level.

Well, they said spartan 259, which is unidentified in the books. They also mentioned in the background noise, spartan 320 who is a female spartan.
We never found out Anton's service tag, so he might be 259. I don't know about 320 though.
Anton was on the team stranded separated from Fred's, before they re-established contact outside the UNSC base.

Luthman D you are the only one making any sense and you have a good possible theory.

Non facete nobis calcitrare vestrum perinaeum

Thank god it not one of the "OMG CHIEF IS TIMETRAVELZ" theories, and instead is a well thought out idea from someone who knows the novels.

I've also read all the books to date, and i just finished rereading the fall of reach. It's possible that since the attack on reach is relatively short in the book that we may end up doing some of the earlier battles, or even switching between people.

LOOK OUT FOR THE ROFL FRAMES OF DOOM!

I really just think it'll have the context from First Strike. The name doesn't imply that it HAS to be from the Fall of Reach - it implys that it takes place under and possibly after the Fall of Reach. Since every event since the pelican crash at the start of the book seems like a playable atmosphere, unlike certain other segments of the Fall of Reach, I think that it's First Strike that's in... with a twist. You know Bungie.

  • 06.05.2009 7:32 AM PDT

Viva La Revolution!
Social Infection ftw

YAY! Someone who read the books!

This game should show the epic space battle.

This game is obviously on the fall of reach.

1. The trailer shows it being glassed
2. "Falls 2010" means Reach will Fall on 2010.

There should be sme sequence where you're a Longsword pilot in the middle of the Space battle.

With B.B. gone, the passion of Bungie.net has lessened.

The impression I get from the trailer (which I can't stop watching!) is that all the radio chatter you here is time-lapsed and a bit jumbled. The rotation around the planet and perhaps even the explosions are in realtime, but the voices I don't believe are. It seems like they start at the beginning of the battle and progress from there to closer to the end of it.

I'm a little more convinced that Reach will be a prequel over a sequel, and will take place from the beginning of the battle to the end of it. Since this seems like it's going to be a full game (and not an expansion), I think it likely that we'll be looking at underground Forerunner structures towards the end of the game (like in the beginning of First Strike).

My hopes, though it's not really backed up by anything other than what's already been written in the books, is that we'll start off on the Pillar of Autum. The Master Chief and his squad go to kill the data storage on the Circumference while the rest of the Spartans go to ground. -blam!- happens, your bird gets shot, and the Spartans have to jump and free-fall to ground.

My memory of Spartan numbers is a bit hazy and I no longer have my books to check, but I'm not sure if Spartan 259 and Lady Spartan 300-something (I'm tired and can't remember from yesterday), the two Spartans we hear in the trailer, are Spartans we know from the books (like Fred, Joshua, Will, Grace, etc). I doubt that we know the main character spartans, though. My guess is that we'll play with a squad that isn't Kelly-087's, so we won't be following her, Fred, Anton, Will, and Grace with Dr. Halsey. We'll probably have a different, just as interesting story to follow with our new characters.

LOOK OUT FOR THE ROFL FRAMES OF DOOM!

You are correct in a load of different aspects, however, remember how they said that they glassed half of reach, yet left the other half un-touched because of the crystal. That's basically how you see it on the trailer.

And you might also be right about not following Fred's squad. As I recall he was the squad leader, and Kelly did recon because of her speed and agility.

The reason this might be true is that Bungie usually creates something new (I know William C. Dietz did the flood AFTER Halo 1) - or in this case following the other squad with... Anton, possible 259 as mentioned above. Their struggle of survival was not mentioned in the books, in which case you have some Bungie quality writing in your hands (Please write this one, Nylund)

My bad, Anton was service tag 044

  • 06.05.2009 9:28 AM PDT

The Maserchief was at reach, he was on the space station above the planet trying to wipe the nav data from the computers. one spartan dies on the space station by floating off into space and the other one is injured and carried back to piller of autumn by 117. So you never know they might switch to multiple spartans throughout the game and you play as the MC for 1 level.

  • 06.05.2009 9:34 AM PDT

I would love to start off the game as a child who is just sitting in the house doing normal things. A few minutes later your house will be broken into by military personel, and you get injected with anistetics and fall asleep.

*Cutscene*

A few days later you open your eyes slowly, blinking, trying to shield the intensity of the light in the room with your hands, but you can't. You are strapped down to a chair.

A Lady, maybe Dr Halsey, walks up and sits down in front of you, and explains what is going on and what is going to happen. You then learn that you have been chosen to participate in the Spartan-II Programme.

*End of Cutscene*

And then the brutal training of a Spartan starts....

That's my idea for a good start to Halo : Reach.
:)

Hmm, I'm guessing we get to be 5 different spartans: Sam, Kelly, John, Fred, and Linda.

And wasn't Linda on the Pillar of Autumn but in Cyro-sleep?

While this is true; in the trailer you see half of the planet appear to be ok, and the other half is rather nasty-looking what with the nukes and all, I'm not convinced that half is glassed while the other half is not.

Aside from manipulating what's in the story for dramatic effect on Bungie's part for the trailer, there are a few things that can explain the difference in what we see. This is me just throwing out explanations and alternatives here, but it's quite possible that we see more of the damage on the darkside of the planet because it's the darkside (explosions and city lights aren't likely to be seen on the dayside). It's also probable that the main cities and key areas are on the darkside during the trailer, and we're just seeing particular explosions of that night.

Also, if memory serves me (which it may not), I think in First Strike & The Fall of Reach, the Covenant had been described as starting to glass at the polar regions, and working their way north and south from there, leaving certain latitudes relatively untouched. This effect would create a "band" of more-healthy looking landmasses, rather than an entire hemisphere.

I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you here, but simply offering possible alternatives.

And you might also be right about not following Fred's squad. As I recall he was the squad leader, and Kelly did recon because of her speed and agility.

To be honest, I feel that if we were ever going to see the other in-the-books main Spartan characters in the games, we would have already. My guess is that Bungie is keeping the books as a sort of "partial" canon, so that the majority of the gamers don't need to read the novels in order to have the characters fully characterized. Thus, I believe Bungie is giving us new, previously unnamed spartans (259 and 320 to name at least two), and the games will remain true cannon, and have minor tie-ins with the novels so that those who read the novels can appreciate the games' depth even more.
