bungie has a right to protect the things they have spent the last two years making. especially since halo 2 is a copyrighted game. i like maps with ripped stuff, just because everything in it is awesome, but if i hear from bungie that they are against it, i will uninstall all maps with ripped content in a second. luckly we will still be able to play the halo 2 CE maps, because they made their weapons from scratch, and have bungie's blessing.

now i have said that i like maps with ripped stuff. although this is not entirely fact. though they are awesome maps, with awesome weapons, i do not condone ripping. i feel that it shows a lack of dedication, as opposed to the sort of thing that the halo 2 CE team is doing. also, since Halo 2 is Copywrited, i feel that these modders should feel a little more respect towards bungie, than to senselessly rip off their work. ok, that's me.

well, seeing as in a bungie news post a while back, they actually told pc users to go dl the halo 2 ce maps, it looks as if bungie doesn't really mind whether people make maps using halo 2 content.

check it out:

edit:iamwhie, now that i read your post, i realize what they were talking about. maybe it is not lawful for them to pull stuff directly from halo 2 :| i dont know i havent read the eula(dont own game)

They have the right to be angry and take legal action...but they won't. It's promoting one of their products (sort of). I'm sure Bungie is happy people mod their games and use content from Halo 2 in Halo CE - I mean, to own CE you must have bought Halo, and to rip from Halo 2 you must own Halo 2 - and you're using the ripped models and such in their game, so...why would they be mad?

Yes, they can probably take legal action. No, I highly doubt they'd even consider it.

Wow, people are actually ripping Halo 2 maps & textures and putting them in Halo CE maps. Don't they realise that any features of Halo 2 were designed solely for Halo 2 and vice-versa for Halo 1! I would laugh is someone just ported one of the Halo 2 maps directly as a CE map without changing the dimensions at all. Don't they realise that the added size and height of Halo 2 maps makes it very hard to play with, with fall damage on. Also i think the worst part is, if they don't give credit where its due. Yes I agree this practice of stealing the Halo 2 maps which Bungie worked hard on is illegal, but it is also the fact that Bungie might not even be credited. Claiming something is YOUR design and your idea when it is just someone else's creation, i find would be the worst insult to me, or Bungie Studios, but really all i can speak for is me.

Okay, to say in plain english to anyone who couldn't infer it from the previous posts, the Halo 2 CE project is perfectly legal due to the fact that all their content is created by them. They are only trying to emulate content in the game and are not copying it directly.
The ripping or porting of files from the actual Xbox disc is infact illegal. But, it pleases me that Bungie may not be upset at modders who do this.
The copyrights on the content are put there with the intent of preventing anybody from stealing ideas and content and them putting them into their own product and selling it.
I think, it should be justified for modders to use the materials and models from the game in order to make content for CE, as long as its unique! If somebody atempted to port the entire game to the pc then that would be illegal cause it would allow for people to get the game for free without having to buy the Xbox game.
But those models and materials are extremely hard to make, so it is understandable that in order to further their efforts in expanding the Halo CE experience, modders want to borrow content.
If it is true, that Bungie does not frown on these maps, I am very interested in them. I'd like links to where they are downloaded cause if they did it right, the content should be excellent, and not shody like some of the atempts in creating models done by modders.
So, sexy legs, I know you already commented, but just to confirm, would it be okay to download such maps? Or would that disrespectful of the copyright?

Could someone legaly rip models or textures then use them as a basis for their own work as long as the ripped model or texture is not used in the map or otherwise made available on the internet, or would that still infringe on copyrights? I personaly would rather learn how to do something than take someone elses work, even if the end result is the exact same thing.

you can rip models, look at them, and try to create one as close as you can based on that model, as long as you don't rip it directly. (i think)

i think that the only thing you could do is make screen shots using some kind of tv tuner card and try to reproduce in your own work. that would most likely be the only legal thing to do
