Before I explain a possible plot line I thought of, I would like to explain that not only have I played Halo CE, Halo 2, and of course Halo 3, I have also read the books, so I am fully aware of the events that take place within the Halo series.
I have read arguments on these forums back and forth on if Halo Reach is a sequel or a prequel. Many argue that the planet MC is floating towards on the Legendary Ending of Halo 3 is Reach at the start of the Reach trailer. Arguably, unless Bungie goes a corny time travel route, it can not be the planet at the same time of the Reach trailer, i.e. Reach's destruction before Halo CE.
Notice, that I said, "same time." I have been on the prequel fence since I saw the announcement live from E3 (on G4TV). I have been arguing that people need to read the novels to get a better understanding of what happens to Reach and so they may understand the formation of the Spartan II program. But perhaps that the planet MC is floating towards at the end of the H3 LE is in fact Reach, Reach after its destruction (glassing?) by the Covenant?
Halo 3 ODST is following a "Rookie" who finds clues about his squad and then the game proceeds to allow the gamer to play a flashback, showing us what happened to that person. Perhaps that if, and that is a big IF, the planet MC is drifting towards is Reach, he could land and begin scavenging, finding clues of some of his Spartan comrades, to which, the game would proceed to play a flashback of the attack on the planet before Halo CE.
The game could continue the story of MC, but also allow gamers to play as other Spartans or Marines from the epic battle that ensued upon Reach (see novel The Fall of Reach).
Now this is just a prediction that I think Bungie could go with, I am in no means saying this is what they will in fact do. Just speculation. I personally would rather just have a full prequel that allows gamers to play as MC or some other Spartan fighting alongside the other Spartans.
Just an idea.
