Subject: Two things that don't make much sense.

Halo 3: ODST looks like it's shaping up to be a great campaign experience. However, I just can't get over the fact that a gigantic plot hole seems to be overlooked. In terms of story, how can the fact that no Elites are present in the campaign be explained? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that the game starts a few minutes after the Master Chief destroys the Scarab in Halo 2, right? This would make sense considering the slipspace event with the Covenant ship happened moments afterward. I know that our character doesn't wake up until a while later, but was that really enough time to completely remove all Elite combat squads from the city and put Brute squads in?

Also, I don't understand how ODSTs can wield the turret. I thought that was supposed to be one of the amazing feats of strength reserved for a Spartan. I am hoping that they can only pick up a turret that has been knocked off of its stand, and can't rip it off its base.

Does it really matter THAT much?

Well, to people who don't care much about the story, no. But to someone who can't wait to pick up a Halo game for the campaign, yes, it does.

Here's a plot hole for you. Think about this:

So, if anyone here's seen the whole opening movie, they know that the entire squad drops down together before the slipspace event. So, why does The Rookie pick up objects and events are re-lived when those events were obviously before the drop? How are the flashbacks supposed to help him find his squad when his squad didn't disappear because of them?

Point Guard: Zaire Taylor (Senior)

Forward: Kim English (Sophomore)

Bungie explained it a while back. The Brutes, being easily usable, were starting to replace Elites in important positions. One of the earliest acts of this was Brutes, not Elites, being sent in to patrol New Mombasa.

Any remaining elites left with Regret. The game STARTS 6 hours after that, although Dutch's flashback was only 2 hours after. All the elites either left or were killed.

Bungie is too lazy to make enemy Elites for Halo 3 for some reason. And dual wielding may be because they are too lazy to make the HUD show ammo on the left side too. And no equipment is because the X button is for the new visor an they are too lazy to implement another way to use it. My god Bungie is lazy.

I care much about the campaign, but ever think these are elite ODST's better armour, enables the ability to carry a turret? The Brute thing may, or may not be explained. To be honest I don't see how it matters? Also, you may only be able to use turrets like that in FireFight?

1) Because at the start of Halo 2, fifteen Covenant ships attacked Earth. Fourteen got the living piss blown out of them, leaving only one (Regret's carrier) to land at Mombasa and deploy troops, which is where the Covenant ground forces in Outskirts and Metropolis come from. And when this particular ship jumped inside Earth's atmosphere, it killed near enough everything still in the city. Including the Elites. Six hours later, reinforcements arrived, with Brutes (Armed and equipped with better, frontline-purposed gear than those seen in Halo 2) in charge instead of Elites. That's why no Elites are present during ODST.

2) Just ignore it. It's not a big issue, and in the long run doesn't matter. It's probably just something that Bungie reckons nobody will make a big deal out of.

........Shouldn't we at least fight Elites in flashbacks? I can understand them not being in the Rookie scenes though.

Hows this for no sense? Why does Master Chief have to rip the turret off it's tripod when it probably folds or detaches, and more importantly how does he rip it off if the tripods not actually bolted into the ground? Huh?

Yeah, that explanation makes sense. If the Elites were only from Regret's carrier, then it I guess it's possible that the remaining Elites on the ground were killed off by the slipspace rupture, and Brutes were sent down to the city. Thanks for clearing that up for me!

  • 06.05.2009 12:09 PM PDT

After the devastation of Regret's jump to slipspace above the city, the ODST was the only survivor of his unit to land, with a 99.99% expected fatality rate (later corrected to 00.52%), having only battered armor and a 6 hour period of being unconscious to show for it.

Quote from HaloPedia.

6 hours of being unconcious. Reinforcements take 6 hours.

Tadaaa.

Yeah, that's the one thing I don't get. if the flashback sequences are set just after the slipspace jump, and there are plenty of human survivors still there, then why are we fighting Brutes instead of Elites? Still, I suppose Regret's Carrier could have deployed an equal amount of Brute led forces into the city alongside the Elite led forces you encounter during Halo 2. You just don't see them in Halo 2, and likewise, you just don't see the Elite led forces in ODST. Either way, Bungie will have a perfectly reasonable explanation for this. They're intelligent. They don't do stupid things, and I have every trust in them.

Because Truth was already planning for it on earth, he brought all the elites on earth to his ship to later reassign them, we might see one or two stray elites on earth.

In campaign you probably won't be able to rip one off of the housing for it, but you may be able to pick one up, you'll walk incredibly slow then..
In firefight you can rip them off and use them because it will not be affected like Campaign is.

  • 06.05.2009 12:16 PM PDT

The internet is a bad place.

Another possibility is that the ODST are just as strong as a human can get without being geneticaly modified,or having titanium bones and whatnot. Adrenaline and training(and maybe some drugs) can make the human body do incredible things.

In other words, they're just that good. =P

Rule 6: Respect the Admins

“It’s their website, and they can do whatever the hell they like with it. You’re a guest, and hassling them about how they run things is akin to going round your Auntie’s house and curling one out in her tea-pot.”

It is possible the elites left after getting the mass mesage sent to them all saying they were lied to by the prophets.

The turret can be a lighter weight and class of the turret spartans use. In the picture it looks like it is intended to be lifted off the tripod anyways.

Not sure about this but I though the rookie was out cold for 6 to 8 hours after dropping and the flash backs are between him landing and the time he wakes up.
