Yay, those MLG Wannabes can leave this game alone. :)
That comment was completely unnecessary for multiple reasons.
First off, just to clear the air, Halo:ODST is a single player game. MLG wouldn't be interested in using it unless they severely changed their system. Secondly, the pistol in the game appears to be taking the place of the Battle Rifle. Not to mention that the SMG also will have a scope. The game is becoming more tactical, which is something MLG will admire and I am shocked to see so many diehard fans of Halo 3's normal modes not complaining about. It will be a much more MLG like experience in the fact that it will rely more on some skill instead of spraying and praying.
Moreover, MLG is a company. A company looking to simply give gamers a choice. Gaming has not proven to be recession proof if you look at the sales on reputable economic sites over the past month. Even look at the giant of the industry, Nintendo, and you will see they are suffering from a lack of wii sales. Also, I should chime in that the Wii is the largest marketshare. It has outsold both the PS3 and the Xbox 360 and it offers a more casual style of gameplay.
Casual gaming is where games are moving towards. Wii sales are evident of that. Even look at the sequels releasing. Halo 3 toned down movement speed and refined gameplay so the skill gap is smaller. Gears of War 2 did the exact same thing. Companies are interested more in making money while attempting to make their fans happy. Therefore they are going with the safe bet rather than the experimental game. In order to do so, they are attempting to appeal more to casual gamers to create more long lasting appeal. That also happens to help with future DLC sales but thats besides the point.
Games, again I reiterate, are becoming more for the casual gamer instead of the hardcore gamer. In order for the hardcore gamer who wants faced paced shooters and more intense firefights, MLG has surfaced. It is a company looking to give gamers a choice. They alter gameplay elements where they see fit in games and are attempting to gain enough of a following to remind developers to, at the very least, include elements that make the game a more challenging experience for gamers. They are helping give gamers a choice in the market by reminding Game developers to not just opt for appealing to the casual gamer base.
Since MLG has become more and more popular, their success in the industry has yet to be felt. Hopefully it will continue to offer gamers a choice between Hardcore variants and casual variants of their favorite games. Whether you like the casual variant or the Hardcore variant, it doesnt matter. The sole thing that matters is that it is good for you, the consumer. Its giving you more of a choice even if you opt for one thing over the other.
I know the majority of you probably already know this information so perhaps its of no consequence. However, I feel it is important to stress MLG's importance in the industry. Its just sad that so many many of you seem to use the extreme fanboys as models for the entire community. Halo 3's normal game modes are not devoid of extremist, arrogant, and whinny people obsessed over the game. Not all of the terminology like "noob, scrub, and bk" are being used by MLG fans. Such terms are prevalent not only from MLG fans, but across the board of gamers. In fact, one could blame MMOs for such a prevalence of strange terminology resonating from games as they hold the biggest sociological impact on gaming.
After all, MMOs are sociology at work. It is a large host of people connecting in one place. It is a community of sorts and thereby has its own stratification. In fact, its sole purpose is to create stratification in a society. Therefore, there are elitists at the top, and non-elites at the bottom. Such a class system is just pouring off now into other games and it will continue as the advent of the internet continues to exist just as stratification is in our own daily lives.
So, I hope that clears the air and makes you think a bit differently. At the end of the day its all about avoiding stereotyping. It just doesnt have to happen and it shouldnt. Don't judge an entire group based on one person you come across in matchmaking, just as you wouldnt judge an entire group of people on one person. Moreover, I hope it also makes you aware of the great impact MLG is having on gaming despite some of the negative things that arise as a result. It certainly isnt the only thing causing negativity in the industry. The industry itself creates some negative characters.
I laugh at this, why? Because it's correct, and very well made. Sadly no one hear gives a -blam!- about that,, and most are quite the lazy type and won't read this...
