Neither. Many game developers decide to do this as another incentive to make sure that they get money. It's business.

For the last time its TURRETS not TORRENTS. A TORRENT is either a peer to peer file sharing protocol or a violently fast stream of water. A TURRET is a self-contained weapons platform housing guns and capable of rotation. And TURRENT isn't even a word.

What's the difference between paying a month in advance and paying up front? The pre-order thing just seems like the logical thing to do, to ensure you actually get a copy, and also to get bonus content. It doesn't cost extra to pre-order.

Its not a marketing ploy, its incentive to guarantee everyone who wants a copy gets one.
