They should be able to use them, it's just silly to say they can't just because it's called the spartan laser. Instead why don't you just wish for a huge recoil when you use either weapons. It'd make more sense.

Lasers don't have recoil...

I don't know I'm expecting/hoping for a stark contrast. Not to necessarily change Halo's game play but force me to think differently

Fun>Canon

Define fun for me; in fact, please provide a universal definition of what is fun.
In this context, I would say something "fun", or at least something that increases the entertainment value of the game, would be a wide selection weaponry.

I can understand people getting upset over canon if Bungie suddenly decided to set Halo in the middle ages and made Master Chief a wizard fighting dragons with his pet owl Cortana or something. That is an extreme example, but you should see what I mean. Contradicting a major detail of Halo's plot is going to upset people, and perhaps rightly so.

But this whole debate is some minor detail. Can ODSTs use turrets and Spartan lasers? Does it matter in the big picture? Their character, aesthetics, motives and overall design hasn't changed. Apparently they can now lift heavier weaponry in this game. So what? Has that really ruined the whole game for you?

What's Sergeant Johnson doing on the icy cliff on the last level of the Halo 3 campaign?

Should ODST be able to us Spartan Lasers? I don't know, if Marines can use Spartan Lasers, I don't see why the ODST can't, but oh wait; they can. Don't believe me? Start up Halo 3's campaign and play "The Covenant", you'll find that you're able to swap your Spartan Laser with any friendly NPC.

You can hand off Spartan Lasers to marines and ODSTs in the campaign. Johnson also uses one at the end, but it has been hinted at that he is an augmented Spartan I super soldier.

Spartan Is aren't augmented.

In any case where does it say that marines or ODSTs can't use Spartan lasers and carry around turrets? I somewhat confused as to how people seem to have gotten this mentality. After all, who the hell sets up turrets in the main campaign in Halo 2 and 3 to begin with? Certainly not the Chief since they're already set up and deployed by the time he enters a given area such as the hanger in Crow's Nest, and the turrets seen in Halo 2 could be moved by one person as witnessed in Cairo Station. So why is it so hard to believe that marines or ODSTs can't move the Halo 3 turret around by themselves?

Self-proclaimed genius.
Roam the streets with a sign, "will love for false hope."

Spartan Lasers. Maybe. Dutch is a pretty big guy and Johnson is epic.

Turrets. Not so much.

I see where you're coming from with the whole fun thing, but ODSTs being capable of moving around with a turret could be argued to be detracting from the status of being a Spartan-II Supersoldier.

The ODSTs in the videos are capable of moving and shooting the turrets at the same time, it would be different if you had to stand still. There is also a difference of moving turrets around by holding them over your shoulder and holding them outright extended and firing round after round and being capable to compensate for the recoil.

Spartan Lasers. Maybe. Dutch is a pretty big guy and Johnson is epic.

I can hand my Spartan lasers to regular Marines, also what's so special about the Spartan laser that makes only Spartans capable of using it? It's not like it weighs a crapload.

If you already live in heaven, Where do you go when you die?

why would the UNSC mass produce weapons that their average soldier can't use? let alone carry?

Simple fact is, your definition of fun in context is a matter of your opinion which, of course, you are entitled to. Thus, the statement Fun>Canon is invalid if applied as a blanket statement because for some people Fun = Canon. Removing some of the luxuries we enjoy
as MC creates a new experience. I just don't want the game to become Halo 1 MC w/o shield and new texture. I'm buying ODST simply for firefight everything else is bonus.

i can has cheez its?

1. Marines and ODSTs can use Spartan Lasers in the Halo 3 Campaign.
2. I don't like how fast players can run with turrets in ODST (they run even faster than SPARTANS- WTF??)
3. SPARTAN-I's are augmented.

Spartan Laser is just a nickname, the real name is the Model 6 Galilean Nonlinear Rifle. It was originally designed to be a Spartan weapon but I think that was scrapped.

ODSTs could always use the Splaser.

Yknow, when I first saw the ODSTs running with turrets, I thought it was bull-blam!- too. But then I thought about it. It will definitely be stupid if you can use it in campaign, but in Firefight it does make sense. Think about it, you'd be on the turret, then one single wraith hit and you're dead/turret is broken and useless/or both. The turret would be useable for a very short time if you couldn't pick it up after it gets broken, and with the amount of Covenant coming at you it will be a deathtrap when stationary. I don't like the way it contradicts canon, but in the end I think Bungie had to make the hard choice but correct choice here. They could have made it moveable, but the fact remains that it would still only take one big hit and be useless. And as for the spartan laser, according to halopedia it only weighs 20kg, which is not that much of a burden for a fit and trained soldier, especially over the shoulder. It has no recoil, being a laser, so I don't see why they shouldn't use it.

When it comes down to it, there are alot of inconsistencies with the canon with regard to ODST abilities. The player who wants a true canon experience has to exercise restraint and not do what a real ODST wouldnt, e.g turrets, using beatdowns, play on higher difficulties etc. That's really the closest you'll get to a canon experience.

Given the responses, maybe I should clarify myself. I'm speaking simply in campaign ODSTs , at the very least, should not be able to rip a mini gun off the tripod and move/run and shoot if SPARTANS can do it and are genetically enhanced. The Spartan Laser simply comes down to the fact that the name is misleading in that sense. Given the nature of firefight, some concessions are expected IMO.

Hmm... I don't remember seeing a Marine use a Spartan Laser, but as I am mistaken it seems I'll play through again.

I'm not sure if they have 'em by default, but you can give them one. I do it on "The Covenant" on Legendary to make the Hornet section a hell of a lot easier.

  • 06.05.2009 9:03 PM PDT

I think the ODSTs should be able to use whatever weapons the game developer believes they can use. We have no rights (except the right to not purchase the game if we think we'll hate it because a big ODST is lugging around a heavy weapon).
