Like many bungie games, it is original in its style and in its gameplay. it is third person action with a decent story (and cryptic terminals ala marathon, ya!), with gunplay and good hand-to-hand combat all taking place in very interesting (if somewhat sparce) locations. If this was just another one among millions of 3rd person/action/combat/gun/girl/kungfu game with a story, it wouldn't be all that impressive. But b/c there isn't anything like it- its difficult, but fun, and very original- it stands out as a good game. imo. meanwhile, other ppl are dissapointed with it.

...But those people (that think it sucks, not the ones who are slightly dissapointed) should be shot.

That's not true. While Oni did end up being a good game, I do believe it fell short of the Bungie standard for quality. The game ended up quite rushed. The level design sometimes felt uninspired, the lack of lightmapping set the game back as far as aesthetic quality was concerned, and EVERYONE gasped with despair when they heard multiplayer was cut. When Oni and Halo were both in development side by side, I was more interested in Oni than Halo, because the multiplayer sounded so incredibly awesome. As far as Bungie's games go, Oni was underpolished and had several areas where improvement would have saved its general rating with the public.

Don't get violent now, Devon... we don't go around saying you be shot for liking it. For each his own. I don't push my arguement to change your opinion. I list my reasons, not to pursuade, but to defend my position.

Thank you, Shishka, for stepping in! See? I'm not alone, Devon. It's nice someone else likes to uphold the Bungie standards of quality...

It defintely felt like something was missing.

And on the MP thing, back in "those days" when it was normal to have a 56k modem, I couldn't imagine having MP in a game like Oni except over LANs. I mean, the timing was absolutely critical to everything (i couldn't quite get the combo moves invovling the shift gkey down well) and I recall playing Tom Clancy FPS's then and crying foul over LAG. (and i also remember bragging that myth was the only game then that didn't have lag). Granted, I didn't follow Oni development so I wasn't punched in the stomach when the news of MP being cut reached the fans (after LAN MP was shown at some expo).

It's not as though LAN only would have been a first in Bungie development history. ;) But it was cut completely because even in a LAN setting, the lag was such that the game was unplayable. It was depressing, really.

I've been meaning to write a thread called "How to get Minatuar Working" to try and rival ripsaw's thread, but uhhh . . . . :) I dont think it'd create a bang louder than a "yawn." which is a shame, its an awesome game and someone should have it carbonized and expanded to TCP/IP :D

It's the best hand-fighting game I know of. Of course, I don't know of many... but still, the gameplay was great - the huge variety of kicks and punches to do (forward-kick, crouch-punch, sideways-running jump kickin) useful with different people around you, and that's not including the special combos. In other games I've seen, it's just attacking - swing around the fist/axe/lightsaber forward while running around...

And sure the graphics could've been better, you coulda fought that robot thing, there could be multiplayer, but the gameplay is awesome and makes up for it.
