As you know, the name of the Rookie's name is currently unknown, as that part of his file is classified, as well as his age. Perhaps he is a character we know, and Bungie is hiding this? We're going to have to wait for the game to find out his actual name, but we have a clue to it now: his initials. In the files for each character, it has their names and Service Numbers.
I'm going to post them here:

Buck
Full name: Edward Buck
Service Number: 92458-37017-EB

Dutch
Full name: Taylor H. Miles
Service Number: 21175-12121-TM

Romeo
Full name: Kojo Agu
Service Number: 14606-85099-KA

Mickey
Full name: Michael Crespo
Service Number: 51033-15973-MC

The Rookie
Full name: Classified
Service Number: 11282-31220-JD

See the trend? The two letters at the end of the Service Number are the initials of the soldier. Thus, the initials for the Rookie are JD. I haven't read any of the books, so I wouldn't know, but are there any characters with those initials? For all we know, the Rookie could secretly be a character that was thought dead, missing, etc.

That's one of the reasons why if you're using bungie.net polls to collect any kind of real data, you're completely insane.

"if i have seen farther it is by standing on the shoulders of giants" Isaac Newton

i am pretty sure they kept the name and age classified so the player could feel like it was them who was the rookie. the initials is probably so that the book writers can give him a name. just like with the Master Chief, we found out his name was john and that he was in his 50s in halo 3!
that is probably why
