It definitely would make gameplay more interesting and even more nonlinear.
How could unforeeable instant kill brute charges ever make things "even more nonlinear?"
Not instant kill, and not necessarily unforeseeable. Nonlinear gameplay is gameplay that is different every time you play it, depending on what enemies do, the way you move through the level, etc. All the previous Halos were linear because there was a set path that you had to follow to complete it. And with that, comes enemies that are set to spawn at the same place on every play through, which gets pretty boring. The replay of ODST is going to be determined more by enemies and their behaviors than which way you go. So if all the Brutes act the same, where are you supposed to find you fun?
Anyway, if a Brute is hiding, there could be low growls to indicate to you that somewhere he's waiting to pounce. And if they should be able to flip warthogs and other vehicles when they're in berserker mode. Brutes are stronger than a Spartan in full armor, so this would be an easy feat. Also, when Brutes berserk in Halo 3 they just stand there for a second or two before charging at you, giving you ample time to kill them. It makes it uninteresting. The Brute should just come raging at you, knocking everything out of the way or jumping over it.
