Subject: Et Tu Brute?

***KEEP IT CLEAN***

Feedest Ye Notte Yon Trolles

Now, I remember watching this video about some concepts of how the Brutes will behave and look. There is a specific part where the Brutes were hiding behind a corner and smashed a human into the wall. Or where a raged Brute flipped over the Warthog. Or even the Brute which ripped the Marines arms off!
These weren't implemented in Halo 3, as this video was released before it.
The Idea of a Brute hiding behind the corner seemed kinda stealth, which ODST is all about.

Now, do you think Bungie will or should implement these features?

I am of an open mind and I am willing to hear criticism. Also: That's stupid and you're stupid.

Probably not, Halo 3 worked fine without it, and it would only make it harder for ODST.

It definitely would make gameplay more interesting and even more nonlinear.

You can't just walk in with a giant banana and expect everything to be peaches.

I dont think brutes really take the stealth route. After all they are called brutes. I'm not saying that there wont be any enemies hiding, but I think it is more likely that the enemies will behave as they did in Halo 3.

Those "features" were merely conceptual animations for Halo 3 that didn't make it into the game, for whatever reason.

Don't try to make any more out of them....

How could unforeeable instant kill brute charges ever make things "even more nonlinear?"

"This is Your Captain Speaking"

I doubt it. I can maybe see it being implemented if they have a flat out warthog carnage level and they stray away from the stealth aspect of ODST but we won't know till its release.

Well think of it this way. It's a stealth game. with the Visor and slow movement along with how the game is meant to be played.. these are the things you're meant to be looking for. and result in rushing in (like Halo 3's run-and-shoot tactic) is Death..

It would make fantastic gameplay. you'd be always on your feet at high alert. If these Brutes were just in the distant and raging and close combat then the game wouldn't be difficult at all. With the "Hand Cannon" SOCOM you could take them out every time.
The Brutes weren't exactly stupid. They might learn that they have Stealth ODST marines throughout the city. Which means they have to up their game a little bit.
It makes some sense if you think about it.
Plus as you said, They were concept animations. Which concepts can be made to be improved or made better. or to give you a taste of what's to come...

Not instant kill, and not necessarily unforeseeable. Nonlinear gameplay is gameplay that is different every time you play it, depending on what enemies do, the way you move through the level, etc. All the previous Halos were linear because there was a set path that you had to follow to complete it. And with that, comes enemies that are set to spawn at the same place on every play through, which gets pretty boring. The replay of ODST is going to be determined more by enemies and their behaviors than which way you go. So if all the Brutes act the same, where are you supposed to find you fun?

Anyway, if a Brute is hiding, there could be low growls to indicate to you that somewhere he's waiting to pounce. And if they should be able to flip warthogs and other vehicles when they're in berserker mode. Brutes are stronger than a Spartan in full armor, so this would be an easy feat. Also, when Brutes berserk in Halo 3 they just stand there for a second or two before charging at you, giving you ample time to kill them. It makes it uninteresting. The Brute should just come raging at you, knocking everything out of the way or jumping over it.

Playing as a brute would be awesome!

That doesn't really make sense to the topic dude. Stay on topic please, I don't want this to stray.

I totally agree. "Nonlinear" is totally what ODST is about. For instance.. Fire Fight is a survival mode which wave after wave is different and the more you progress, the more harder and worse the enemy becomes.
Plus Brutes know about "Stealth" because within Halo 3 you had Active Camo Brutes with Flame Grenades.

In the Halo 3 campaign I have come across brutes taking similar stand up cover to gears of war, the back to the wall kind.

I think they will leave the hiding to the Jackals on the rooftops

Well no doubt jackels will be sniping on the rooftops. That's classic Halo style. But hidden Brutes is what this topic is all about.
Just imagine being surrounded and a Brute flips your Warthog and everyone gets chucked about. It would make gameplay much much different to how everyone is used to.

Ugh...

First on a BWU.. yeah, I'm cool.

ODST;MYTHIC Screenshot winner! One of the first to get their hands on the mythic map pack.

There will be stealth brutes.

I hope you don't mean Camo brutes like we saw on the Arc.
I bet Bungie are expecting us to walk through this game as if we're still playing Halo 3's "running in with all guns blazing tactic". Which makes more sense to use those featured in "et Tu Brute?" to it's full advantage!

"Fine" isn't the word I'd use. Halo 3 Legendary is easy, the easy is stupid as a XBL kid and isn't aggressive nor defensive at all. Besides, in First Strike the Brute were described as being extremely strong, fast, and aggressive. Halo 2 shows this best, Halo 3's Brutes are weaker than a Halo 2 Elite on Heroic.

  • 06.07.2009 4:13 PM PDT

yes, and there also better be dual swords in Reach.

  • 06.07.2009 4:15 PM PDT

I swear to DRUNK, I'm not GOD!

No.

ODST looks like just a modded version of Halo 3. There may be a few different weapons like the AutoMag and new features like the map and VISR mode, and the levels will be different, as will the HUD and player speed and health and a few other characteristics about the player, but it looks like that's about where the differences end. Like they said on the podcast, they're using the same engine as they used in Halo 3, so the physics will be the same, as will the vehicle behavior and the look of the grunts and brutes and all the other enemies.

I really doubt they'd do anything as different as changing the enemy AI, or introducing new enemies.

This isn't the Reach forum. Keep it on topic.

Four shots, four kills, reload, repeat. This is the work of a sniper.

Ah, one of my favorite ViDocs. And they said they tweaked the AI, so maybe that is some of the things they implemented. Even if they didn't add those, they probably added a few things for the brutes to do.

True as you say Emo Joe89.
But if they had the same engines with the same enemy behavior, tactics, looks and AI then we'd all know what to expect from ODST. Sure, it won't be a run and shoot because lack of speed, strength, amour and shields. But it would be so easy to adapt to how they react and everything.

It would be so "linear" (which I quote from someone's post) that you would know exactly what to do. Hidden Brutes (without Active Camo) and Brutes that rage and flip things over sounds like a darker side of Bungie. and something fresh to work and play with...

"The strength of the pack is the wolf, the strength of the wolf is the pack."

"Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me..."

ODST for life

I was a little disappointed I never got see anyone get their arms ripped off chewbaca style like they showed...it would mix things up a bit if they included some of those animations. It would add to the grit of the game that's for sure.
