I was in 5th grade. I popped in the Halo CE disc into the massive, clunky first generation Microsoft Xbox, and wrapped my small hands around the controller that was almost too big for me. Little did I know what I was getting into.
10+ years later, I still look up to my childhood hero, Master Chief, while everyone talks about He Man and Spongebob haha

A character with nearly no identity and no visible face allows players to assimilate into the role easier.
You don't know who these people really are, but seeing as how it's first person and they're mysterious, in the end, it's what an FPS is all about.: You ARE that person.
If the rook had a singular personaility, you'd feel as if you'd be just controlling another person. But through non-identity, it's easy for you to think that you ARE the rook and your personaility is his.
