Stop destroying the environment, get of that computer and go into your backyard and build a nuclear powerplant...

:)

I have been reading some topics and it said something along the lines of "The planet was glassed" And i was just wondering what "Glasses" ment?

My Gamertag is DarkBladeX360

It is basically turning a material into glass like substance. I think..

This would be a good time to point out that the US Government seriously did consider nuking the moon during the Cold War as a show of force. Project A119.

"A large explosion on the Terminator line would put the sun behind the mushroom cloud, making the explosion visible with the naked eye from Earth."

Then the US decided they'd just send in Neil Armstrong to land on it. Neil Armstrong - the one man on the earth that was considered a suitable replacement for a nuclear missile.

When a planet is glassed, it is when the Covenant bombards the planet with super-heated plasma. Plasma is heated to about 4,000,000 degrees F. So...when something that hot strikes the ground, the ground is instantly turned into molten rock. When that cools, it forms a black, ashy glass.

When a planet is glassed, it also completely whipes out the planet's atmosphere. When that happens, the planet becomes inhabitable.

Yea pretty much all you need to know is that when a planet is glassed it is dead and cannot support any life anymore (which is what happened to pretty much all of Earth's former colonies).

  • 06.07.2009 11:43 AM PDT

you can also partially glass a planet, as in halo 3 when the elites glass most of Africa while attempting to stop the flood infection

yep what they said, books are a worth while read!

I am the great devourer.

When a planet is entirely wiped of surface life byu the covenant, making it smooth as glass, like a planet turning into a marble.

  • 06.07.2009 12:14 PM PDT

I am flatterd that you botherd to look at my signature.

you know what a marble is right?.... yeah lets just say the planet is ne bige marble after the covenant is done with it...

(actuly the planet looks black and ashy and nothing like a marble)

  • 06.07.2009 1:07 PM PDT

Time flies like an arrow; fruits flies like a banana.

They throw so much superheated plasma on a planet that it's surface itself becomes glass. The covenant did this to many Human colonies, including Reach.

In Halo Wiki it says most of Reach got glassed but not all of it and it also says there was forerunner tech on it that the Covenant were aware of.

I speculate Halo Reach will be narrated by Master Chief as if he's dreaming and revisiting old memories of what had happened. Halo Reach will serve as a first in a new trilogy. Maybe Chief will awake to a new enemy recovering something from Reach. There's gotta be a reason why the portal sent them there.

We have absolutely no reasons to believe that they were sent to Reach. In fact, the planetoid at the end of the Legendary Ending briefly shows it surface when the emanating light brings our screen to white. It shows to be a mechanical surface with metallic designs. Far from anything biological, or anything that would constitute its surface having been "glassed".

Not this again. Look, the planet in the Legendary ending HAS NOT been confirmmed as Reach. And the portal DID NOT send them there for a reason. The portal just had to closed on them before they could reach earth, leaving them stranded

Not that kind of glass, you dumbass.

~Death

Pretty much what was said originally, other than Plasma is actually 10x10^10 degrees Celcius (10,000,000,000), which is why humans were so shocked that the Covenant had managed to superheat things to that temperature.

Also, if you want the technical term, it's Obsidian: a glass made from superheated rock. You find it from volcanoes.

As for 'superheating dirt to make glass', you make glass from molten sand. Sand is ground down rocks. There are rocks in the ground, right? So superheating the ground makes glass.

  • 06.07.2009 4:19 PM PDT

Bam! Said the lady.

SPACE MARBLES!!!!!

but yeah its just when covie ships fry the planet with plasma beams everything takes on a glass like texture

  • 06.07.2009 4:33 PM PDT

What a waste....

You know PoR in Halo Wars? And his Cleansing Beam? Well, sometimes, it makes the ground all molten. Then, it makes it look like glass. However, the planet is still habitable. Look at Harvest and Reach! Harvest just went into an Ice Age, but that was only the bifrost. After Reach, the Spartans and Halsey survived. So, it just blows up the planet until just about nothing can go back (for a while).

What am I?

Glassing is the precise and methodical distribution of superheated plasma across the surface of a planet, thereby destroying ecosystems, disrupting the atmospheric balance, raising global temperatures to intolerable levels, and above all destroying nearly all structures on the external surfaces. Imagine a marble in a blowtorch and you'll get a very crude idea. It's a nickname coined for the dark, ashy glass that superheating often forms from soil.

spot on,

earth for example is primarily composed of iron and silicon oxides.

you chuck several hundred k plasma at it, it melts.

note**
this gives you an idea of just how big the covenant armada is. on average covenant ships may be between 1-2 km in length tops, and to glass an entire planet.... well, its a big area. requires alot of firepower and quite abit of time, not something you do in an hour or two.
though i do not think you would need to hit every square km of a planet to make it uninhabitable, even if you just nailed the major population centers, and the surrounding areas, apart from killing all the populants the amount of heat generated would probably raise atmospheric temperatures by 10's of degrees, effectively rending it inhabitable
