Subject: Opening Cutscene Conversations: Speculation

"The strength of the pack is the wolf, the strength of the wolf is the pack."

"Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me..."

ODST for life

So Ive been watching the opening cut scene a few times and I find the conversation between Dare and Buck to be pretty interesting. You can watch it here...
Opening Hotness

From the sounds of it Dare and Buck have been on a previous mission together and the ODST's from that mission were killed and these guys are replacements since they have last seen each other. Which brings up the question what exactly is their previous relationship?

Dare also says "at least they listen" which Buck responds with "to me". Does this hint that on their previous mission or missions that the ODST's under Bucks control disobeyed orders and were killed? Or possibly followed the orders of Dare and were killed? Interesting either way since it makes you wonder if you can really trust either of them.

And from the conversation they (Romeo, Mickey, Dutch) have while standing next to the weapons rack and some lines during the drop they don't know that they are going somewhere else other then the the Carrier until they drop. Now why exactly wouldn't Buck tell them where they were going before the drop? It doesn't make much sense to me why a squad leader would withhold mission info from his squad. Yet another reason not to trust Buck or Dare.

Also, what could possibly be more important then the Covenant ship? (as Buck tries to point out) The ship had a Prophet on board and its not like the location of Earth was relevant anymore, and I am sure the locations of the remaining colonies wasn't the highest on their priority list either. And why wasn't the chief sent after this seemingly super important stuff instead of some ODST's and an Oni officer?

If you have read the new Halo book, The Cole Protocol, you know of the project Exodus that they were creating as a fallback plan. Is it possible the UNSC had created their own Exodus project? Possibly even found a Forerunner shield world to evacuate to? Or maybe plans/production facility of some new weapon or armor for the UNSC army that would have turned the tides in the war. That could explain the Recon armor Dare is wearing. Possibly something to do with the SI?

Just some food for thought, I found the opening cut scene to be very interesting that sparked lots of thoughts in my head and just wanted to post some of thoughts and thought process for everyone to read (if you actually read all of that pointless blabber). Discuss your own theories and thoughts. Let the speculation begin.

Considering Dare's quick objective change mid-drop, I would assume she was responsible for Buck's last squad's deaths.

this very interesting, to me i feel like theres something between Dare and Buck making the other ODSTs a bit nervous.i could see a discussion upon whos taking command of this drop obviously Dare but Buck wants to show what kind of leader he could be.and after he gave Romeo a sniper;he seems piss off giving it to him.

also;Romeo and Dutch knew each other during the battle of Ariel in Halo:Helljumpers coming out this summer.

Halo: Helljumpers? I'm afraid I don't know what that is. Is it a new book? Link?

"Nah. As long as the prince of darkness is okay with it. I am too. But thanks anyway, Mr. Velvet Spider."

xD

I think its pretty funny Romeo wouldn't shut up about how much the navy failed. We all know Dare is up to something and I'm pretty sure it has something to do with that ONI building in New Mombassa. I wanna know who the old squad was.

I think you missed a critical part of the conversation right after they start the drop.

Buck: We're way off course!
Dare: This is where I need to go.
Buck: But we're going to miss the ship!

Obviously Dare reprogrammed the drop coordinates for part of the squad to adhere to her secret agenda.

I thought about posting something about that but I was unclear if it was Buck saying "were way off course" or if it was Mickey. I figured it to be Mickey since it appears that Buck knows about the change of plans before the Drop, but if it is Buck saying those lines then maybe he is acting as if he doesn't know about the change to keep his squads faith?

A version of MJOLNIR armor that marines can wear? That would definitely turn the way to the UNSC's favor.

It sounded like Buck but I guess it could be Mickey.

they also develop Recon alongside with the Scout armor.

Pretty sure the one yelling about being off-course was Mickey.

Project exodus was only for that rebel asteroid, not a plan for humanity as a whole, I'm fairly sure.

Right. I was just thinking maybe the UNSC had a similar plan of their own on a much larger scale. If the Rebels could figure something out on that large of a scale with limited materials its not out of the question that the UNSC had a similar last ditch escape plan if the location of Earth was ever discovered.

Self-proclaimed genius.
Roam the streets with a sign, "will love for false hope."

I'm certain that Dare's intent was the ONI Alpha Site and sending the main force of ODSTs to the assault carrier was just a diversion.

  • 06.07.2009 1:08 PM PDT

Dare is the new squad leader. At the start of the cutscene, only Dare and Buck know this. The other ODSTs expect to be dropping on to the Covenant ship, Dare and Buck know of the change of plan.
Notice Buck takes the shotgun off one of them, (Romeo?) he is expecting to be going in to a Close Quarters fight (they even say that Dare's Recon armour "gotta be Close Quarters") and doesn't understand what he'll need a Sniper Rifle for "inside a Covenant ship".
Buck says "they'e not going to like what they hear", reffering to the fact that while everyone else is dropping on to the ship, they're going to drop somewhere else in Mombasa but don't know it yet. This is why Dare tells them to adjust their trajectories and why they think they're way off course.
So maybe ONI was expecting the Covenant ship to jump, they just weren't expecting it to be so soon.

Nothing important in life is ever easy, thats what makes it important...

I think it will be interesting to see what kind of things they will put you through in the game.

I'm also curious as to if this "rookie" ODST will end up being someone we know in the books that are already out about the time after New Mombasa.

Because we can still hear the other ODSTs that are not on-camera. Example:

Buck: Hey Romeo, remember when I told you to shut it?
Romeo: Yeah?
Buck: Well consider that a standing order.

Listen to him yell: "Troopers! We are green, and very, very mean!" and then listen to "We're way off course!". They're two different voices.

At 1:31, the Squad leader says something that reminds me of Firefly, and Serenity. Kinda like the captin of the shuttle from the show, and movie.

That's probably because Buck, the Squad Leader, is voiced by Nathan Fillion, who plays Mal, the Captain of the Serenity. Mickey and Dutch's voice actors are also from Firefly.

I don't understand why they would course correct mid flight, couldn't they just launch on their own trajectory from the get go?
