I have had my inspiration given back to me and, as a result, I am now going to begin work on Halomaps... again.

I've lost all of the original files (website), but I can assure you all that I won't let it stop me.

I have been debating whether the whole Halo CE website thing is justified, and after seeing a new map called 'Sniper Canyon Redux' which you can find HERE, I've decided that it's time to just get my head down and crack on with it...

I will need some time, but you can expect to see the same ease of use that you did before with hopefully, good download rates again...

Here's hoping for a good reception...

Beautiful map, that is.

But, even more awesome is the reopening of the site. This can help jumpstart the CE community again. Viva la Halo CE!

muffmeister, i got an idea that may revolutoinize your whole system (and it may not) (on the people leeching your bw away)

use some code that makes it so that one ip addy can only make say 1 or 2 connections to your website at once, and limit bandwidth per ip addy(reasonably).

another thing you could do is some kind of queue thing, where only a certain amount of people can dl at once, but this may be a bad idea, because some idiot out there will clog that up intentionally

something you can do is try the thing where a dl is started using some kind of script, so you cant directly link to the file. that way people cant link from other sites. then you can do things on a free membership only basis (so people cant just link to the dl page) and you could have some kind of bandwidth management there.

just throwing some ideas out there, cause you know someone is gonna be an idiot and try to take you down.

EDIT:

i forgot to say, the reason i post these small suggestions, is your site was the sole reason i dled halo ce in the first place :D hail to the muffmeister. please dont leave again :(

Hehehe... Thanks guys, but I've got a way to go yet!

I have to screeny EVERY single map again aswell as rebuild the site from scratch. It's not going to be an easy task, but I think it's worth it in the end.

I will also be looking for people to contribute, but I'm very selective about content. I will probably need help from people who are prepared to put some time and effort into tutorials etc, but I want to get the basics sorted or at least moving in the right direction!

I have a feeling that I'm going to be a little busy for a while...

Anyway, Good luck!

Posting what kind of tutorials you would like here and at gearbox would probably be a good idea. Hope you get it up soon. Did you win your court battle?

As I said to Mr.B last week I think it was, no, we haven't even got to court yet. I'm still going through the recieving nasty letters routine... When it's all done and dusted (and I'm pretty sure I'm gonna come off worse), I'll be sure to let you know.

Thanks for the compliments people. I really appreciate it! Please don't expect anything to happen immediately though. It's going to take me a while to get everything together and in any sort of order, but it WILL happen!

I wasn't actually aware that there was anything available for the Mac, but I will look into it. If I can find anything that's been converted to Mac then yes, I will include it. If anyone knows where any of this stuff is, please give me a link... I already have a ton of stuff to get through and I probably wouldn't get round to it for a while. Plus, I have no way of being able to test the files out. Maybe someone with a Mac could point me to some files that they know aren't corrupt?

As far as tutorials go, things like how to install maps, run dedicated servers, enabling the console... you know. If anyone is feeling particularly helpfull, maybe even some 'how to's' on map creation. I don't know yet, you tell me what you think is a good idea.

hmmm if i recall i think yout3 had a certain affinity for Macs and apple related products.. and i think he plays Halo on a Mac, so it'd be worth it to ask him, or just make a thread advertising for Halo Mac players, I'm sure that'd work, or if you're too busy, i'll make the thread.

Well, there's not really any rush at the moment, although it would be nice to have everything in mind before the actual process of building the site begins...

I spose it could always be added at a later date, if there's any demand.

i'm sorry, but it won't last. now that the word has spread to "certain ppl" it's only a matter of time before the draining begins. some people want you to try just to see you fail.

I don't understand either...

Thing is though, I've learnt quite a bit from my previous experience... possibly in part from you, Idryll. Thankyou.

I have no doubt that you tried your best to hurt Halomaps and my reputation before, but at the end of the day it didn't work :)

It was something else in the end, totally unrelated to you, that got to the website. I have no doubt that the site will be just as successful this time as it was before, and it doesn't really make any difference what you say.

I'm glad to see that you are watching your words this time though... I spose at least that's something.

Well, I have already started on the map files... I spent six hours last night just sorting them all out, deleting duplicates and inserting new readme files. This time round I'm going to be archiving them all as .rar's, but it shouldn't be a problem as I also include an unzipping utility on the site for people who don't want to bother with winrar...

I expect things to take a while. For example, I don't expect to be online any time this month. There are certain things that I want to get right this time because of certain individuals who want to hurt the site and have pretty much said so already... On top of that, as I've already said, I have to rebuild from scratch which is going to take me a bit of time.

I really appreciate the offer of help with the screenshots, but that's something that I need to do myself. That way all screenshots will be of the same quality, same size etc... i'm really only interested in articles that people want to write up. As I said though, thanks for the offer.

Tutorials would be helpfull, but at the same time I believe the site would be ok without them. It would be nice to have some well written help for those who still don't understand the whole Halo CE process. There are more than likely lots of people who want to be able to play Halo CE, but are just not confident enough to mess around inside 'C' drive installing the maps.

Basically, I'm only making ONE promise... Halomaps.co.uk will return. I don't intend to give any timescale of when it will arrive for two reasons... 1) I don't want to give a date and then not be able to deliver due to whatever reason. 2) I don't want to be in the position that I'm under pressure.

I'm sure you all understand.

Well, I don't think that the maps are out there anymore. You may have to ask around on a couple forums. I used to have them, but when my roomy cleaned out his comp (damn roomy...) he deleted them. I do, however have the patching system used to insert the maps.

Anyway, I think it's great that you're putting the site back up. Good luck, and, well, try not to get bored with the repetitiveness of the job.

Hey, if anyone wants to hurt your site, you just give me their name...

Just kidding, but if you need anything at all, I can always help. It is great the site is coming back, 20K download speed on halomaps is agonizing. I remember getting at least four times that at your site - plus you had one of the cleanest sites, too. Just the maps, lots of them, and a few odds and ends.

:D :D :D :D
