From the beginning
You know the end

NOTE: This may not be 100% accurate. I've listed each number as a different character communicating.

1. "Gamma Station, this is Fermion RSO. Unconfirmed reports of an in-system slip space rupture."
2. "Impossible. Check your source."
1. "Reading multiple pings below the orbital defense grid."
2. "Oh this can't be happening."
3. "There's no mistake. It's them."
4. "Winter contingency has been declared. All units are mobilized and ready."
5. "This is Sierra 320 prepped for combat insertion."
6. "What the hell was that?"
7. "We're coming in hot. Hold on... We just lost our bird."
2. "Oh my god."
3. "What the hell is going on down there?"
7. "There's some people down here!"
3. "Okay. I've just dropped off my men."
7. "We're overrun. We'll hold position for as long as we can!"
2. "I need you in that fight Nova 1. Nova 1 come in. Nova 1, do you read me?"
8. "This is Sierra 259; you've got Spartans on the ground sir. We're not going anywhere."

A look at the Halo: Reach Trailer
Basically the intended purpose of this thread is to analyze all aspects of the Halo: Reach trailer with some mild speculation.

"From the beginning,
You know the end."

This quote is basically telling us the game will be a prequel. Microsoft has confirmed this. What strikes everyone is "You know the end." Does this mean that planet at the end of Halo 3 is Reach? Well it could. However, it probably isn't. As I break down the mysterious battle from the trailer, you'll understand why.

The first thing we see is the Planet Reach, nice and clean. You see what looks like two other planets and a ring (probably just space dust) orbiting the planet in the background.

Fermion RSO: "Gamma Station, this is Fermion RSO. Unconfirmed reports of an in-system slip space rupture."
Gamma Station: "Impossible. Check your source."

Apparently the covenant coming was a surprise attack just based off the fact that the man from Gamma Station was so surprised. Also the RSO could be multiple things. I checked the acronym online and some of the top results include Regional security officer, Radiation Safety Officer, and Recognized Security Organization. Recognized Security Organization seems the most logical to me because they would probably be the ones to pick up on an unauthorized fleet of alien warships coming into contact with a human planet =)

Fermion RSO: "Reading multiple pings below the orbital defense grid."
Gamma Station: "Oh this can't be happening."
3. "There's no mistake. It's them."

Now a third guy comes into play. He's sure it's the covenant. He must see the covenant cruisers from somewhere. Also the guy from Gamma Station seems to be an Admiral or some sort of high military rank.

4. "Winter contingency has been declared. All units are mobilized and ready."

Winter contingency is a term we have not heard of before in the Halo Universe. However, I do not think it is something to really speculation over too much.
http://www.lawrence.sd.us/Documents/Winter%20Storm%20Preparat ion.pdf
This is an example of a Winter Contingency plan thanks to the power of google. Basically this man is saying as a precaution, preperation has been set forth. All of our units are ready to go. As far as the winter part goes, I'm really not sure.

Sierra 320: "This is Sierra 320 prepped for combat insertion."

Finally a female spartan ready to go. Do you think we will be able to play as her?

6. "What the hell was that?"

The covenant have just bombarded the planet that's what. It seems the power has been knocked out on the surface below. This leads me to believe that the covenant were smart enough to suprise attack at night. Could we see some night time missions such as the Halo 1 days?

7. "We're coming in hot. Hold on...We just lost our bird."
2. "Oh my god"

Now we listen to a marine, Spartan, someone who just crash landed right in the battle.

3. "What the hell is happening down there?"

The guy we heard earlier must be on some sort of orbiting defense grid such as Gamma Station because he doesn't know what's happening on the planet.

7. "There's some people down here!"
3. "Okay. I've just dropped off my men."
7. "We're overrun. We'll hold position for as long as we can!"

This shows the attack was definitely a surprise to them because the civilians have been bombarded. The guy I've labled 3 could also be some sort of military leader or maybe part of the RSO planetary defense.

Gamma Station: "I need you in that fight Nova 1. Nova 1 come in. Nova 1, do you read me?"
Sierra 259: "This is Sierra 259; you've got Spartans on the ground sir. We're not going anywhere."

Clearly Nova 1 or "Nova One" would be Sierra 259. This "Admiral" for our sake wants Sierra 259 to come down to the surface. However, there are already spartans on the surface. I've also noticed this spartan seems to only speak if he has to kind of like Master Chief. This spartan is also arrogant as he is not listening to who is probably his superior officer. But the big question is "Where is Nova 1?" He is not on Reach so where is he? He can't be on any of the planetary defense grids can he? He says "We're not going anywhere." Who is he with? My guess is other spartans. Could he be at one of the two planets in the opening of the trailer?

One thing seems likely, where Nova 1 is would probably make more sense for the Halo 3 planet to be that Reach. There has got to be something there that is so significant that it would keep a spartan from disobeying his superior officer. It would make sense for the Chief to finish whatever his comrads started. Discuss....

ODST for life

Well I wrote up my own breakdown earlier, here is some of my thoughts on it.

The text that reads "From the beginning, you know the end" is saying that we know what happens to Reach, and we know how the storyline plays out in the Halo universe. MY question is why would you make a new game where the storyline is already something we know? Whats the point in a story that you already know the ending of? Could this possibly be a hint that we think we just think we know the end. Maybe the game takes place (or part of the game) after the Covenant glass the planet. We always thought the planet was glassed and that was the end of Reach, but maybe there is much more that happened that we don't know about.

"Multiple pings below the Orbital Defense grid." probably doesn't mean much but I thought the Covenant jumped well outside of the Defense grid not below it.

"Winter contingency has been declared, all units mobilized and ready." What exactly is the Winter contingency? I would guess it is a emergency plan enacted during an invasion but what does this plan include? Possibly self destruction of key buildings and personnel? It would explain the unusual explosions that you see on the surface of the planet.

What exactly is that burning object that you see briefly? Is at a Mac platform? An UNSC ship? Possibly the platform John, Linda, and James assault in the book Halo: Fall of Reach?

Sierra 320 "Prepped for combat insertion". Obviously the title of Sierra 320 meaning she is a Spartan but is she on the planet? Or is she orbiting above in a ship? Which series of Spartan is she? And why is she alone?

"What the *insert blam here* was that?". Now why would someone be wondering what it was? Obviously they weren't filled in and what was about to go down before the giant explosions started. These explosions don't appear to be Covenant weaponry (to me at least) since they use Plasma to glass planets, but as Halo 2 shows they (Covenant) do have access to "bomb" type weaponry. Possibly explosions of the power/control stations to the Orbital Defense Mac guns? Or maybe the UNSC is starting a mannual purge of vital information on the planets surface. But then again why would they be trying to drop off more troops if they are blowing the planet? "Okay. I've just dropped off my men."

After the explosions begin chaos obviously takes over. "Were coming in hot, Hold on!" followed by "We just lost our bird". Now who exactly is coming in hot and where are they going? Does the follow up quote mean whoever or whatever it was crashed and was killed/destroyed? Again could this be John, Linda, and James assaulting the station in the book when they crash land into the station? Possibly the Spartans John sent planet side?

"Theres still people down here!". This again makes me wonder if the UNSC are destroying certain things and places so the Covenant couldn't get their hands on important information (such as the location of earth). Or maybe this is just showing that the UNSC was in a massive evacuation and had to leave some soldiers behind due to lack of room on evacuation ships.

"...is over-run, were holding position as long as we can". Obviously whatever they are protecting is important if they are still trying to hold their position. And who exactly is holding the position? Spartans? Marines? ODST's? Possibly evacuation position since its the last thing we hear before things start going silent. Possibly CASTLE base? Mac platform generators? Spartans John sent planet side again?

"Nova/Noble-1" (debate if its Nova, or Noble, or whatever) who they need in the fight. Could this be a UNSC ship? Maybe a Spartan? Secret weapon? Whatever or whoever it is the man cannot get a hold of Nova/Noble-1. Maybe they bugged out seeing that Reach was lost or maybe they or it was destroyed. Who is the man calling for this Nova/Noble-1?

After the call for Nova-1 there is no response which I take it means that this is when Reach has been pretty much destroyed. But then you hear Sierra 259 answer the call. Could this be where the game picks up? Are these Spartans the lone survivors left on the planet? Is the planet destroyed at this point in the trailer? Who are these Spartans and why are they still on the planet? Which series of Spartans are they?

My speculation is that the game takes place (or at least part of the game) sometime after the seemingly complete destruction of Reach. The UNSC bugged out of Reach so fast its entirely possible that they just assumed the Covenant glassed the entire planet when in reality they left certain areas intact for unknown reasons and one of these areas is where Sierra 259 and his Spartans could be surviving.

If this is true and the Covenant did not glass the entire planet it brings up the question of why didn't they glass the entire surface? Is there Forerunner artifacts on the planet? Did they try and gain information about the UNSC? What information? (excluding the obvious locations of Earth and other colonies)

Well those are my thoughts and ideas about the trailer. Good breakdown though, picked up on some things I didn't.

I'm the Best there is!

I grabbed my copy of Halo: First Strike off the shelf, The covenant didn't glass all of Reach, they came there looking for something forerunner, which is how they found it.

Also, responding to " MY question is why would you make a new game where the storyline is already something we know?" Do we know all of what happened? No, only that everybody died except for Chief.

I don't know, I think it was more of random battle chatter as the situation deteriorated rather than actual conversations.

Please go back through this and fix your spelling mistakes. Also, it's Nova One. And uh..what makes you think Gamma is Admiralty? RSO probably means Reach Slipsace Observation or Reach Security Orbit. Something like that.

why do you think there are so many WWII games out there? i think this is all to get a first person view of what really happened. The battle of reach is a crucial part in the halo universe and the halo games as halo 1 starts right after it. from the ' picture of the game you see a squad of what look like spartans so im guessing you as a spartan will have to link up with the others or will start out with them. from the last line
you've got spartans on the ground we're not going any where
this sound like hes already linked up with some spartans and they are defending something.
there is a substantial ONI base on the planet and to answer another question yes there is a forerunner artifact on the planet.
this is why the covenant are there
this is also why they did not destroy the entire planet they did not want to harm the artifact
so it is possible there are areas untouched by the glassing

edit: after reading the lines a few times i personally think Nova/Noble 1 in the squad name made up of the sierra's or spartans and who ever was speaking was just their leader

I actually didn't interpret it as the Spartan disobeying orders. I took it more like he was stating, hey you got Spartans on the ground and we're not going anywhere, like almost a reassurance.

But I kinda like your idea better.

Guys I could really use some clarification on if it's Nova One or Noble One.

And uh..what makes you think Gamma is Admiralty?

"I need you in that fight Nova One [if what you say is true]." That really shows that he's planning out the war. He's trying to get the spartans in it. He's communicating from Gamma station. I'm not saying he is exactly an admiral. However, it seems he has some military authority over the others.

RSO probably means Reach Slipsace Observation or Reach Security Orbit. Something like that.
Once again all I did was research the acronym online. It could mean anything.

I'm hearing Noble One as opposed to 'Nova One'. Also note Bungie's frequent use of the word 'Noble' as in the gentleman below this post who is a 'Noble Mythic Member'...

Also, the word is 'Holy' not 'Holly'.

Question. If you turn your brightness up, during the Halo Reach vid, you'll see a series of ships floating below the damaged orbital space station. Anyone make sense out of these?

Fermian RSO, I am guessing = the geosynchronous position of a Remote Sensing Outpost (in this case (again i'm guessing) the damaged RSO, above Fermian, which is viewable in the vid).

Ya I noticed those also. I cant really make anything of them other then they are just typical UNSC ships involved in the orbital battle. Your guess is as good as mine

RSO stands for Remote Sensing(or Scanning) Outpost. Fermion RSO (in the fall of reach it is referred to as Fermion remote sensing station) was one of the stations that first noticed the covenant in slipspace by probing. RSOs are responsible for checking the slipspace around certain areas to check for enemies within the other dimension by sending out sensing probes.
