Subject: So why another Beta?

they just want to get it perfect, get players thoughts on it first, before releasing it with no regrets.

What kind of changes will it be though? A new feature? New weapons? Perhaps an improved version of Forge (alas Far Cry 2)?

possibly all of those, but i dont think theyll reveal forge in the beta.

I think there will be a whole range of things they will be testing for. Mainly to make sure the net code and the actual game functions well online and an improved ranking system that discourages things such as boosting, second accounts etc.

on a side note: I hope they include some sort of reference to your halo 3 rank in Halo reach. Eg, on your service record it says what rank you achieved in Halo 3. That way at least your time and effort put into Halo 3 isnt a complete waste in the long term.

I hope they can make it up to 24 or even 32 players.

Doubt it tho...

and how!

To test the game, concepts, balance, and how well it handles online play.

Isn't that...obvious?

  • 06.07.2009 10:35 PM PDT

Did they really change much between H2 and H3? It doesn't have to have changed a lot.

  • 06.07.2009 10:37 PM PDT

Sent the map 11/27. Hope it all goes well.

The Beta is used to test alot of things, including:

- The developers would like to know if the map's landscape itself is balanced out.
Ex: Valhalla's landscape used to be imbalanced in the beta, so Bungie had to change the landscape slightly to balance it out and make the map more successful live.

- The developers would get an idea how many servers they would need when the game becomes available.
Ex: Bungie learned they needed to at least triple the amount of servers for Halo 3, based on the number of games played and how frequent the players played.

- To make sure any changes to weapons and items would be balanced.
Ex: Bungie's first solution for the battle rifle was to nerf its damage. However, the Carbine outperformed it, and imbalanced maps such as High Ground and Snowbound. So they had to make the changes that it made today.

The Active Camo wasn't helpful, as players can still visually see them.

- The developers want to see if glitches from the last game are available, and if any new glitches were to occur.
Ex: The banshee was fully capable of breaking out of the barrier and can fly into space in Valhalla.

...and a bunch of other stuff. At the same time, it gives us something to play, and I'm excited for it.

Bungie never does demos, and this is the closest thing we can get to a demo. ^_^

They did make halo trial for PC which is technically a demo.

One word NATAL if you dont know check out the end of M$ press conf. at E3.

If Natal doesn't even have a release date, and ODST is shipping in Fall 2009, I have major doubt that the Natal is working enough for a Multiplayer First Person Shooter Game.

  • 06.08.2009 12:11 AM PDT

Halo 3 Academy Staff
RvB Episode 100- Sarge destroying computer Vic says "Whoa dude that was my Heat Sink now how the f*** am I going to sink my heat"

PETA: People for the Eating of Tasty Animals

well why did they have 1 for h3 if they already had tested it with H2 multiplayer

+ the main reasons
sell ODST
hype Reach (and therefore sell Reach)

I miss playing Halo with my friends.

They don't want it to turn into GOW2... horrible glitches, lag fest, ridiculous matchmaking, so the beta will probably help prevent all of this!

IDK, why not ask Infinity Ward the same thing with Modern Warfare 2?

  • 06.08.2009 12:35 AM PDT

I'm A Rusty Tongue on Live. I like mongooses.

Now go away.

I think it is possible that Project Natal could be involved. It may be an optional feature, but I also know the multi-player will be different.

This game could even involve space battles, as that is something that Fall of Reach had a lot of.

I wish I was still legendary.

Always could, if you looked.

You forgot testing netcoding, stability, and small bugs like how the arm of someone carrying a flag on a mongoose was screwed up.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Pope

I doubt Natal will even be ready by the time Reach is released, and even then its hard to see how it could work with a FPS.
The beta is likely for Balancing reasons. Its hard to tell if a game is balanced when its a few dozen testers playing it. Throw several thousand into the equation and its a lot easier to see if stuff is going to be exploited.

Its also a great publicity tool. Think how many ODST buyers are going to be hyping up how amazing Reach's multiplayer is.

  • 06.08.2009 1:41 AM PDT

Natal hmm, It has potential but players will end up with injuries diving and dodge enemy fire with out some sort of padding. Its quite amusing just to imagine this happening.
Neural implants so you can just close your eyes and play as if your really there would solve all the problems.

  • 06.08.2009 3:02 AM PDT

Bungie has also used betas to test map balancing. People who played the halo 3 multiplayer beta noticed some significant changes in the three maps, like weapon and equipment placement, also some other geography changes like the side of the valley in vahalla next to red base was lowered.

For Carnage Apply Within

They think that they have pacified Ireland. They think that they have purchased half of us and intimidated the other half. They think that they have foreseen everything, think that they have provided against everything; but the fools, the fools, the fools! — they have left us our Fenian dead, and while Ireland holds these graves, Ireland unfree shall never be at peace
-Pádraig Anraí Mac Piarais

Halo 3 =/= Halo: Reach

I hunt for the Prophet of Contentment, the San 'Shyumm that murdered my son, and stole his birthright, his Energy Sword. They call our species Heretics. They claim to all that our tongues sting, our words a vile poison that feeds on the unworthy. I have seen the true face of Heresy. The head of a gallant warrior lay on the ground. His neck scorched and blistered, scarred by his own blade. I shall retrieve the weapon, and drive it through that bastard's heart! Punishment for his sins is nigh.

Think of it this way, 4 years after Halo CE's release, Halo 2 comes around with all new multiplayer. 3 years after that, Halo 3 appears, again with new multiplayer. Halo Reach's supposed release date is 3 years after Halo 3. This means Halo Reach will replace Halo 3, just as Halo 3 replaced 2. Welcome to the new age of Halo.

Or you know it could just be to push sales on ODST.

When the beta annoucement came out the first thoughts I had were "ODST must be weak if they're doing that"

As other people are saying I think its to gather info on the Mutiplayer either some new setup or system

But theres always the possibility that Bungie is doing it to:

A) Push the sales of ODST to make up for a less then stellar game
B) Push sales on it so they can use those numbers to renegotiate their contract with M$ for future games or for some reason similar to that.
C) New features need to be tuned
D) Datamining
E) Combination of above

Halo Reach is a BRAND NEW ENGINE. And is a WHOLE DIFFERENT GAME. It doesn't so much have to do with money as it has to do with the fact that they don't want a glitchy game when they ship.

Wanna know how different a game it will be? Well there may not be the oh so loved BR in it.

Does anyone even read these?

Well the gameplay won't be the same as Halo 3 because then... It would just be Halo 3. A new game comes with new gameplay, this needs to be play tested. Plus it's not like Bungie copy and pasted everything from Halo 3, this is all built from the ground up.

Thank god too, Halo 3 was starting to get old.
