The ODSTs in the new Halo game must be real slackers...
I mean, a Gunny who's been in the UNSC Marine Corps about a quarter century, and he is still a Gunny? I mean, it's normal for people to retire at 20 with that rank, but he's stil chuggin' and still just an E-7?
A PFC who has been in 4 years? 4 years an still an PFC? Ouch, maybe he messed up in his career.
I guess they're either slackers or got into some trouble, being a rowdy ODST and all...

It just came to my attention, I don't mean to upset people.

I got his sarcasm...one person has to implement sarcasm and then you get a pile of terrorist chipmunks crashing your party, not fun at all..

SF rank progression is quite different from normal forces. Plus its very possible that they refused promotion. I know of fighter pilots that stayed in O-3/4 when they could've progressed way past that just so they could fly more. Promotions could mean no/less combat. And I doubt any ODST would want that.

Yeah Mickey (the PFC) probably messed up somewhere...

Staff Sergeant future 510, serial number HHT3-09PL, Flood Military Reserve.

Why do you think they were the first wave to go in to New Mombassa? They are the Bad Company of Halo 3!

Noobs can't handle AR/Pistol Spawns.

true, true, and true. All of that makes sense. I never really even payed attention to their ranks. SP is much more difficult than the regular forces.

Also from this you can see that Buck knows Dare by her first name, which could mean there were frat problems somewhere that couldve affected promotion boards and such...

Theres a possibility ODST's ranks are reset when becoming an ODST, and also they may have been in cryosleep for an extended amount of time. Johnson says in Harvest he spent half of his career in cryo.

Yeah only they're not in a game with -blam!- multiplayer.

It's the 26th Century. Medical technology has advanced to the point where guys in their forties can still kick it in the Corps. Think Dara Torres.

Strictly speaking, you and Bungie both flubbed a bit. The "Career E6" is so common in our military today that I wouldn't bat an eye at a 40 year old E7. However, having a PFC in the ODSTs is redonkulous. Lots of Special Forces outfits around the world won't even accept you for selection if you are below Sergeant. So, keeping in mind that the ODSTs pick from personnel already in Special Forces, it should be impossible or at least extremely uncommon to have privates and lance corporals, let alone multiple examples of this in the same squad.

NO GROUP INVITES!!!

UNSC may have different systems. Most likely has. It's based on US Marine Corps (why the heck are all future military forced based on those?) though but many things can change.

And the War's been on for over 25 years, UNSC has lost damn many ODSTs so maybe they have dropped the requirements a bit.
Maybe Mickey's PFC only in ODSTs, but in reality is like a sarge or so. I mean ODSTs could have their own rank progression. (Say if i get terms wrong, dunno about military stuff really)

Considering that ODSTs are the hardcore and rather aggressive types, i wonder if most of them even are officer materiel. Most of them are damn good soldiers but maybe too volatile or so to be officers. Even non-coms....

Jenkins from Halo CE and Contact Harvest was 27 years a private...

Department of Redundancy Department here.

I'd guess that some of them probably messed up somewhere along the lines, though.

Aussie enlisted personnel of any rank can apply for SF selection, if they get through to commandos or SASR I'm pretty sure they have to start from Trooper(E-1). This could be situation with the ODST's...

It's based on the USMC because they are the best son's of guns out there. Can't go wrong with those Devil Dogs!

Yea, I was confused with Jenkin's time in service and his age as well.

You don't get promoted for every time you go to into Combat, it's for your leadership. Do you want idiot for leaders. E-1-E-3 are the only ranks that don't reqired leadership, but the whole squad is E-3 and up in the Squad, besides Mickey but he was a pilot then a ODST.

Anyways the ranks make up for thereself. Buck, was in many battles, which most of them where far away so he'd wasn't in duty for a while. Dutch is in a Squad that has a leader, he doesn't need to get promoted. Romeo is a dick, I highly doubt he would get promoted for that. The Rookie doesn't have a backround story, he doesn't do that much, why do you want a leader who'd does nothing? Mickey was a pilot for a Pelican, and he was a crew chief. He'd probably spent 2-3 years in the airforce out of his 4 years.

Isn't it that Aussie pay grade and rank have separate progression structures, unlike the USA?
I'd opt for that, all the pay with less responsibility. Ha.

I just remembered, the pass rate for promotion tests may be crazy during this time, like it was in the early 90's, with a 5 - 10 % chance of making rank, unlike today where it is around 45 - 50% for NCOs.
