Well some of that may be difficult as Grunts are not imposing (to Spartans) and Elites do not tower of them either. But I do know what you mean. In CE I actually need to think about my approach and manage my weapons to give myself an edge. In Halo2 and 3 I just need a quick reaction time and a BR, maybe a shotty, but not necessary.
The time travel issue is a big one because it would seriously screw up existing plot-lines. The MGS series (sticking with your example) did no such thing, they simply drew spanning time lines together. There was no time travel, just clever writing. The Halo Universe is more than capable of doing the same, and they already have in the novels.
What i'm hoping for with this game is that they prove that this universe is a whole lot bigger than just MC. Don't get me wrong, MC is the man, but the Halo universe has some great characters in it, I'd love to see them get the attention they deserve.
Bolded 1: EXACTLY! I know that to a spartan, a grunt and an elite are not as much of an opposition as they are to marines, but it would still be nice to see them a bit...darker. Ive only read the first book a couple years ago, but from what I remember, even to a spartan, these enemies were frightening. Since when have you SERIOUSLY been frightened by a grunt? Hell the last thing I remember actually jumping out of my seat for was the the first time encountered the hunters.
Now im usually against a developer upping the gore and violence factor, because I never really see the use (Gears is a great example...WAY overly violent) but I think it would make the story and characters (The covenant/marines/flood ect.) a bit more excitment if bungie made the game a bit grittier. I know the novels arnt overly gritty, but still, throw some mud on that game and show that these creatures are mean, ruthless, heartless animals.
*Note I HATE games that just throw dirt on a game to make it look "better". Im not saying make the game brown and black...im saying make it a bit more mature"
Bolded 2 (Second paragraph): Oh no I completely understand the plot holes and such, but keep in mind, even though the books are GREAT backstory to the game, they are entirely separate. Bungie has said that the books have little to no baring on the games themselves. Weather thats the same case in this game or not, only time will tell.
Bolded 3 (third Paragraph): I completely agree, the more deep the universe the more back story for books, games, videos, and other media to explore. And more Halo is ALWAYS a good thing. As long as they keep the same quality thus far.
