Are they?

I think so, but I'm not sure....

Share, post debate, PLEASE!

...unless you havent read the books, in which case, this will be a gian *spoilers* thread... (Dumbledore dies!)

PS: Canon means absolutely true, or true with minor technicalities...

EDIT: I know bungie said they were, but im concerned with poetic license...

99.99% they are true. Bungie wouldnt alter the story from the books

  • 06.07.2009 11:39 PM PDT

Signatures are for squares.

It is confirmed that all the books are cannon.

  • 06.07.2009 11:40 PM PDT

I am flatterd that you botherd to look at my signature.

bungie is real good at keeping there stories strait..(unlike lucas)

You've Been SHWEGALED!!!

Well, i realize that, but i also realize the lack of missions spelled out in the books... thats all

and Lucas, save the g@y clone wars cartoon, did quite well in keeping stories straight, for the sheer size of the Starwars galaxy...

Halo 3 Academy Staff
RvB Episode 100- Sarge destroying computer Vic says "Whoa dude that was my Heat Sink now how the f*** am I going to sink my heat"

PETA: People for the Eating of Tasty Animals

i saw an interview with Joeseph Staten on HBO that said they were canon but that some of the less appealing parts such as johnson's immunity to the flood could be broken (this interview was pre H2)

so almost all canon but some little details can be changed

he also said I Love Bees is not canon

Easily! Its just that everyone is obsessed with masterchief that they have stupid theories on tying the end of halo 3 to halo:reach

Although I agree that ILB should not be considered canon, if you could give us the source for Staten saying all of this, that would be excellent. It'd really throw a wrench into the works over at Halopedia.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Pope

I'd say it's likely the same as the Star Wars novels - Lucasfilm considers them canon, but the films are a higher level of canon, so if the novels are contradicted its the novels that have to be retconned not the film or tv show.

Chances are its the same with the Halo books. Fall of Reach is canon, but if Bungie want to contradict it, its the book thats overridden not the game.

and how!

They are canon, but they have little discrepancies, especially in Halo: The Flood. That book was just a waste of time. Plus, they said the tubes on the SPNKr Rocket Launcher were colored Olive Drab...

This thread points out what is and is not canon, with evidence from Bungie employees. The novels are considered canon.

I've read it, but spiderpope brings up a good point....

Doc: "i'm a pacifist"
Caboose: "your a thing that babies suck on?"
Tucker: "no dude, that's a pedephile"
Church: "tucker, i think he means a pacifier"

One thing to keep in mind however is that while the novels are considered canon, that does not mean that any will be a direct translation to pixels what was already on paper. There are things that can be written about that simply cannot be made into a game as it would ruin gameplay.

Example: MC and all Spartans in the novels have some pretty amazing abilities, least of all are their shared improved reflexes and speed, not to mention enhanced vision including the ability to see at night. In the game however these things would ruin balance. So MC is given awesome armor with a shield and that's about it. All of the Spartans true abilities are pretty much downplayed for the sake of gameplay.

So lets say that hypothetically this game was to be an exact adaptation to The Fall of Reach, it would not be able to do so and remain 100% truthful to the novel. Otherwise individual Spartans would have insane abilities (Kelly) not to mention size differences (Will, Sam) as well as different expertise (Will, Linda). Add on to that the shared abilities brought on by augmentation like night vision, enhanced reflexes (think bullet-time) and the change in strength, and the game would be entirely unbalanced, not to mention change all the rules set in the Halo games thus far, even though that would not necissarily be a bad thing.

so, will future novels reflect this, or will they keep making kick-a$$ books?

  • 06.08.2009 8:00 PM PDT

If you go to my thread, an interview with Joseph Staten indicates he says directly that they are.
