Subject: Animating in Forge - The next step for Halo multiplayer?

It's a fair assumption to make that the addition of Forge in Halo 3 was a big hit - but where does Bungie go from there? It would be a surprise if we didn't see the Forge in Halo Reach (due to its success), but will it be exactly the same? I think not.

What I'm about to propose is not simple on the developer's part, but if done correctly, could make way more fun than it is now, which would be quite the feat.

What would make the deathball more fun? Maybe if it were swinging like a pendulum. What would make CTF more fun? Maybe a moving platform or non-drivable pelican that has a set path circling the map. Thats right, what i have in mind is animation in Forge. If you thought the possibilities of forge in Halo 3 were limitless, think again.

If you think it's dumb, look at it this way - in terms of successful bungie maps that already have animation:

Zanzibar - Animated gate and Bridge
High Ground - Animated gate
Terminal - Trains that destroy everything in their path.
Elongation - Conveyor belts.
Waterworks - While the big thinger up in the top of the map was mostly aesthetic, it still could crush you under the right circumstances.
Relic - Unlockable Teleporters.

While you're probably thinking "Well those are pretty minor things", and they are (aside from the trains), but it doesn't mean it couldn't be revolutionary for forge. Whether your intentions be subtle or massive, it could help you make the best of your map.

What do you guys think? Major flaws? Better ideas?

I would love this idea, people could make even more awesome crazy maps that I could download from Forge Hub! I would really want to see an elevator, escalator, conveyor belts, and openable doors gates and windows activated from a control panel.

It would be awesome but I wonder how difficult it would be to place that stuff, I mean I already have one hell of a time placing walls that stand upright.

I would love this

Like in HaloWars, the bridge that blinks and goes away(forgot map name)

That would be awesome, not sure how hard it would be to create though.

They're energy bridges, they're in CE as well.

That's exactly what i'm talking about - hell even have a bridge explode. Or move to a different place. Hell i don't know, i can't even scratch the surface of the possibilities.

but they should have it so that if you were to place a pelecan you could preset the track yourself like bring it in on a entrance vector and have it land to pick up troops and fly around the map with people inside and if it is destroyed you could set the ammount of times between a new pelecan being sent in. and also they should have the reckage from explosions and stuff stay for the remainder of the round that way it seems a little more realistic and it could be good for machinima purposes.

Yeah why not - but you wouldn't even need to make it a pelican. If you made a millenium falcon out of the "legos" in forge, then you could have that making laps.

How bout a botton that lets us put our logos on the wall like in counter-strike.

  • 06.08.2009 7:23 PM PDT

Or they can make like brutes or grunts or something play with you. Or program them to
guard a flag, door or something.

Side note: What happened to the bots that were supposed be placed in in september last
year?

although when you put the bots in maps you make, they wont have paths and run into walls. (but then again gow did it... wait, no they didn't)

Forge needs to be improved with openable doors and such and it needs to be made easier to do because unless you spend like 100+ hours maps look like crap

Well, yes of course they would make some kind of system to prevent that right?

PS: Yes GOW did do it.

yes they would have a system to prevent that if they did make bots in forge but the reason i said gow didn't do it is because they didn't have costom made maps with their hoard mode, just the normal maps.

although i have no idea on how to make video games so i could be totaly wrong

You're actually very right. It hadn't occured to me that animations would be a great idea. They could even be in the Properties menu for an object (when you click 'X' on it) in either a Toggle or a list format.

I'd like to see it. One has to wonder, though; will objects that move into eachother intersect or halt? Will they just cut their animation short and reverse back to rest position before retrying?

Yes, it's tough. I hope Bungie does it, though. 'Cause it's a great idea.

I mean bungie could have it resort back to their normal physics response, where when they collide they crumble or roll over eachother, in some cases maybe explode. I mean whatever, either way it'd be cool imo.

I like your thinking. Dynamic elements in a map that a user could place would be great. And could actually affect an outcome of a game. Many of those examples you mentioned, could affect the game. You could be randomly killed by the monorail train if you dare try to run across the tracks as a shortcut.

Will Bungie do it? If they could get it to work, they would. But I do want some other basics in Forge first like undo and walls snapping ninety degrees upright.

Yeah that's one of the only things that really irks me. The fact that you can't bind things and put things at specific angles. I mean tony hawk pro skater 2 had that for christ sake. lol.

its ok i used it 25% of the time but when someone used it on me thats when i started calling him a n00b and a modder and how i was going to give him negative feedback you sissy needler user.

I am really excited for Forge in Halo: Reach. Maybe Bungie did not give us all those things we wanted on the current forge because they would include it on the Reach forge. My though.

this idea could make chuck norris smile.

It would be interesting, perhaps cheesy, but hell, lets do it.

Perhaps it could work if there were joints and such and the abillity to "snap" things together? Like to make a pendulem, you just make a rotating elbow joint and attach a big block to it and attach the thing to the ceiling and have it start the game at an angle.
Train would be a bit of a stretch, the conveyer belts would be cool. Switches too.

I would also like the abillity for items to despawn at a precise moment or time limit (such as when a switch is pressed). This would allow me to create an amazing slayer map that takes place on a hand that slowly animates into clenched fist that spawns a bunch of fusion coils and kills everything, ending the round.

Finally, being able to create floating and moving platforms (or groups of objects) could be fun.

But seriously, just the snapping idea alone would be amazing. Screw dropping tanks on people, I could take my entire map and slaughter someone with it.
