I was thinking about security roles while messing around with mine the other day and a thought occured to me. What if there was an option for non members to be able to see the forums but not look at the threads specifically or post in them. It would be a kind of 'preview' for prospective members. Would this even be possible?

Hmmm. interesting idea. I like it. Also, what if non- members could also view and perhaps even post in specified threads (set my admin)

It was a possibility in the old column. If this is brought in then there should be no problem with bringing in fully public Forums.

I did also try to do that and I do think that it could be a good idea. Perhaps they could see the forums, but not post in them.

Or possibly have a guest posting option as well?

I have to say I like that idea. It could be as simple as a little
check-box:

"Allow guest users to view message boards?" [Y/N]

Yeah. That would probably link in with my idea of having certain threads in which a guest can post in.

All these ideas are great, because it allows a guest to get involved in a group/chapter even if they're not a member. I allow my guests to view articles, submit news etc. but there is a very clear limitation on guest abilities.

Well, I guess that's kinda what the idea behind the guestbook was. But nobody really uses them much and members won't take the time to read them.

i remember the first chapter i joined stated that you had to sign the guest book before you were accepted as a member. That's the only way you can get that book signed.

Then in the forum where higher members would have a thread of their own, non - members or lower members could see the thread.

It would say, "you are not allowed to view 1 or how ever many threads on this page"

I think thats what it said back in the day.
